International Hockey League Increased To Seven Teams

The International Hockey League of which the Fort Wayne Komets are a member, will consist of seven teams for the 1963-64 hockey season. Two Canadian teams, Chatam and Windsor, will be members of the league with Des Moines, la., also a new member. Omaha, Neb., franchise has been transferred to Toledo, O. These teams with Fort Wayne, Muskegpn, and Port Huron will compose the International Hockey League. Webster - Sidney In Tourney Finals North Webster and Sidney will meet tonight (Thursday)' at No. Webster to play the championship game of the summer county high school baseball tourney. The game time is slated for 5:45 p.m. Tuesday evening,. Sidney downed Leesburg with a score of 12-2 to advance to the finals. Tom Leiter was the winning pitcher and Mike Rogers was the losing pitcher. Leiter aided Sidney with a bases loaded triple>md Elmer Ousley had two hits in J>our tries. Dausman had four "hits for the Blazers. Webster defeated Pierceton in the semi-final game Monday night on the Pierceton diamond by a score of 7r4. Pierceton out hit Webster 8 to 4 but the Cub’s disastrious .second inning in the field, when they collected 3 errors while the Trojans sent in 6 runs, made the difference in the ball game. Pierceton was charged with a total of 4 errors to Webster’s 2. Chad Beezely was the winning pitcher for the ‘Trojans while Garth Cohe took the loss for North" Webster. Sidney defeated Claypool Thursday night to advance to the semifinals. North WebStdr advanced to the semi-finals Thursday evening when they defeated Silver Lake 4- | 0. ■ Chad Beezley of North Webster was the winning pitcher and Bob Arnold of Silver Lake was the losing pitcher. - Garth Cone of Pierceton was the winning pitcher who aided the Cubs to advance to the semi-fin-als Thursday in the game agaihst Milford on the Pierceton diamond. The final score of the game was 3-1. Pierceton pushed over their two winning runs in the sixth inning when Chris Rood, cleared the bases 'With a double. Marion Groves of Milford was the losing pitcher, made, a two-hitter in the losing cause. Leesburg downed Akron Thursday with a score of 9-1 ■ to advance to the semi-finals. Winning pitcher for Leesburg was Mike Rodgers- Butch Stookey, Bob Bishop and - Bob Skinner led the Blazers at the plate. MILFORD PONY LEAGUE ACTIVITIES Wuthrich’s Milford Electric team defeated the Warsaw Lake City Bankers 12-5 Tuesday evening at Warsaw. Gary Hurd, winning pitcher went the full seven I allowed 3 hits, walked 6, and struck out nine. Milford collected seven hits, had 14 walks and 10 strike outs. The hits were made by Beiswanger (3), Max Beer, Bruce Beer, Om and Ted Speicher. Tonight at 6 p.m. Phend and Brown’s, will meet Cromwell at the local diamond. Minneapolis and Saint Paul, members of the league last year, will not be in the league this year. The addition of these new teams should be of great help to the International Hockey League by giving better areas in some cases and better travel schedules for the teams. The schedule should be very competitive with some very good hockey. Fort Wayne is the defending champion, having won the season title and the playoff for the Turner Cup. 5-0, Bank 3-2, Rotary 1-4, and Lions 1-4. In the Pony league - July 31 game. Sox 14, Tigers 1; Cubs 13 and Yanks 1. Standings are: Sox 7-1, Yanks 5-3, Cubs 3-5 and Tigers 1-7. . MILFORD LITTLE LEAGUE ACTIVITIES The Little League schedule was postponed this week because of the county fair. The schedule will be concluded next week. MAKES RUN FRIDAY The Syracuse fire department made a run at 7:30 Friday evening to Harrison and Main streets where it was reported smoke was so dense it was obstructing traffic. It was found to be a smoke bomb that had been released in a nearby backyard.

Mrs. Nora M. Shannon Mrs. Nora May Shannon, 75, one-time resident of Syracuse, died Wednesday, July 31 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Firestone, at New Paris. Hubert Blue of Syracuse, a brother, is among the survivors. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Culp funeral home in New Paris. Burial was at Solomon’s Creek cemetery. Harvey Brady Harvey Brady, 75, of 3816 Royalton Ave., St. Joseph, Mich., died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday in the St- Joseph Memorial hospital Born July 27, 1888, in Syracuse, he moved to the St. Joseph area in 1918. He worked for 30 years at Barlow’s Laundry and Cleanerd in St. Joseph. Since 1960 he has been employed by the Benton Harbor public schools. Mr. Brady married Lydia A. Kreiger on March 15, 1922 in Benton Harbor. The deceased was a member of the Gideon International Society and was assigned secretary of the society’s Berrien county camp. He belonged to the First Evangelical United Brethren church, Benton Harbor. He was also a veteran of World War I having served with the U. S. artillery. He was a member of the Veterans of World War I Lakeview Barracks No. 582 in St. Joseph. J Survivors include the/ wife, Lydia; two sons, Thomas and Philip of St. Joseph; two daughters, Mrs- Harley (Ellen\ Palmer of Battle Creek, and Mrs. Kenneth (Vemette) Andersen of Sister Lakes; a sister, Lydia Willard of New ten grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Dey Brothers funeral home in St. Joseph. The Rev. James Sherwood of the First Evangelical United Brethren church and F. W. Willard, a nephew, officiated. Burial was at the Crystal Springs cemetery in Benton Harbor. John D. Bridenstine John D. Bridenstine, 81, Os 151 North Summit Street, Nappanee, father of Mrs. Merrill Vanderveer of Milford, died at 5 a. m. 'l'uesday in the Elkhart General hospital to which he was admitted a week ago. He had been ill for five years. Mr. Bridenstine was born April 7, 1882, in Kosciusko - county. He married Vera Markley Dec. 6, 1919 and she survives. Surviving in addition to the Milford daughter and his widow are another daughter, Mrs. Brenneman of Nappanee; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Charles, of Elkhart. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon (Thursday) in the Nappanee Church of the Brethren by Rev. Leland Emerick and Rev.

Orvin Kilmer. Burial was in the Union Center cemetery, west of Plymouth. Mrs. Julia Smith Mrs. Julia Mae (Judy) Smith, 46, of Ligonier, manager of the Hoosier Hilites, an advertising publication in Ligonier, passed away at 6:45 a. m. Monday at j Parkview Memorial hospital in Fort Wayne. She had undergone surgery for cancer last Friday. Mrs. Smith was born in Kokomo ort April 24, 1917, and spent most of her life in the Ligonier community. She was a member of the Ligonier Presbyterian church and the Business and Professional Women’s club. Survivors include a son, Ben of Bloomington; her mother, Mrs. Ethel DeMotte, Ligonier; a brother, Richard of Cromwell; and a sister, Mrs. Betty Lindley of Richmond. Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the Ul-rey-Sedgwick funeral home in Ligonier. Rev. C. B;'Carpenter officiated and burial was in the Oak Park cemetery. Eveline S. Knight .Mrs. Fred (Exline S.) Knight, 88, who died Oct. 2,1962, in Pasadena, Calif., was buried this week in the Milford cemetery. Mrs. Knight was bom in Milford the daughter of Adam and Antoinette (Groves) Clayton. She married Fred H. Knight and he died March 1, 1937. She was a niece of the late Rev. William Groves, former Methodist minister in Milford. Mrs. Knight retired from the real estate business in Chicago at the age of 83 and moved to California to live with her daughter, Miss Helen B. Knight. Elmer E. Chiddister Funeral services were held Wednesday for Elmer E. Chiddister r 1, Ligonier at the UlreySedgwick funeral home in Ligonier. Rev. C. B. Carpenter officiated and burial was at Brown cemetery at Millersburg. Mr. Chiddister was bom June 124, 1900, a native of Lagrange county. He. married Marie Roach, Feb. 23, 1824. ETA BETA JR. BRIDGE CLUB MEETS Mrs. Leon Vance of Syracuse was hostess to the Eta Beta Jr. Bridge club on July 25. They played bridge on a pontoon boat while drifting on Wawasee Lake. Swimming was also enjoyed by oneMrs. Richard Maresh won first prize, Mrs. Charles Myers, low prize, and Mrs. Richard Neff, traveling Guests at the meeting were Mrs. Jeny Kem and Mrs. John Kroh. WSC WATER SHOW NEXT WEEK ’ The Syracuse-Wawasee Water Safety council will present its second annual water show on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 2 p. m. in front of the South Shore Inn. All students in all of the swimming classes are busy making last minute preparations and in practicing their various events, There will be racks, demonstrations and a splasketball tourney at the show. The water safety instructors in charge are Jim Rassi of Nappanee, Creighton Bums of Cromwell, Sue Balsey of Bremen, and Bonnie Brouwer of Syracuse.

MOVED TO GOSHEN Mr. and Mrs. John Zook, missionaries from Korea, and small daughter have moved to Goshen where Mr. Zook has accepted a job as sixth grade teacher at| the Chandler school for the coming’ school year.
