South Bend Central Drops Columbia City; Wins Regional
In the first game of the afternoon at the high school regional basketball tourney held at Elkhart, Goshen bounced Plymouth with a record breaking Elkhart regional score of 99 to 67. In the second game South Bend Central ranked no. 2 in the state, took out Columbia City, the Warsaw sectional winners, in impressive fashion, 77 to 41.
The title game of the tourney Saturday night was the real thriller that was expected with South Bend Central breaking a 51 to 51 tie in the overtime with a field goal with 1 second to go to defeat Goshen 53 to 51. and Win the? regional title. Reginal tourney notes: Elkhart’s huge field house filled to capacity each session. Many persons searching for tickets, few offered. Official attendance for each session, 7551\ Bad day for the red and white sdhool colors. Plymouth, Columbia City and Goshen each had red and white school colors. Cheering sections were very colorful. Goshen, with the best team they have had in quite a number of years, ■ had the most enthusiastic fans. Central hit 70 per cent from the field in the first quarter against Columbia City. The second quarter was a back breaker for -the Eagles as they hit 9; per cent from the field,- a lone field goal, giving them only 2 points for the quarter. Central’s starting five- are negros. Most fains after the afternoon session thought the final game would be close but Central would win; Columbia City well supported by their fans with many cars decorated and lots of -signs. Quite a number of Kosciusko county fans and a great number of our county high school players and coaches at the games. Most of them seated in Columbia City area section. Crowd was Very colorful with the many different colored school jackets and pretty girls in bright clothing. Lots of noise and festive spirit. Central had beaten Goshen by 15 points earlier in season) Final game close and hard fought, a real “barn burner,” with the winning field goal scored with 1 second to go in the overtime. Central favored to take semi-state at FortWayne Saturday.
Mentone Player Is Top In County Mentone’s Bill Nellans closed the 1962-63 basketball season _as the individual scoring champ -of the county. Bill's average'wks 20.1. He scored 483 points in 24 contests. Placing second was Dave Johneon of Warsaw. Johnson set an individual scoring record for Warsaw high school and led all scorers in the tough Central Indiana Conference scoring race. He scored 42 points in one game and ended the season'with an 18.6 average. Sophomore Garth Cone, Pierceton, was third with 376 points in 23 contests for a 16.4 average. Jim Whitaker of Silver Lake was fourth. Fifth place went to Jerry Walther of Sidney and sixth place went to Tom Holderread of Milford. Seventh place honors were taken by Tom Feldman of Etna Green, while Jack Rhoades of North ; Webster ranked eighth. • Jerry Ryman of Mentone was ninth and Pat .Money of Syracuse ranked Komets Play Minneapolis The Fort Wayne Komet hockey team will play driving and second place Minneapolis in a very crucial game Sunday afternoon, Mar. 17, at the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum at 3 p. ’m. With only two more games to play at home in the regular season schedule, the Komets will be going all out to take the- Millers to win the regular season championship. The final regular season game wiU be* played Tuesday, Mar. 26, with Omaha.

Sport Shorts Berne is the biggest of the smaller towns remaining in state tournament action. Berne has a population of 2,277: Royal Center,, 876: and Ireland, 350. Berne will go against the Elkhart Regional winner—strong South Bend Central in the first afternoon game at Fort Wayne, next Saturday.* Royal. Center is pitted against Greencastle at Lafayette, and Ireland will take on defending champion, Evansville Bosse at Evansville. At East Chicago three of -the state’s ranked teams met. Michigan City took but Gary Roosevelt’s Panthers, then East Chicago Washington, a finalist a year ago, eliminated Michigan City. Incidently, Bill and Lew, Goshert of Warsaw officiated the afternoon tussle between Michigan City and Roosevelt. Columbia City didn’t have a player in double figures in their afternodn game loss to South Bend Central. Tony Smith led the wa’y with just 8 points. In the same regional Goshen, had Plymouth down 34-24 at the end of the first quarter. Huntington had to go three overtimes to stop Marion in the finals of the Marion regional. The Vikes continued to sparkle defensively by allowing Bryant but 28 points in the afternoon. During their first four games of state tournament play, Huntington had allowed but 99 points, a defensive average, of 25 per tilt. . ? . Washington’s Hatchets were defeated by Vincennes, 60-34, during regular season play, but upset them Saturday, 55-49. Washington did not take a shot from the field in the la/t half, but connected 15 our of (17 times from the free throw line during that time. Little Ireland (team name the Spuds) nipped them in the finals, however, 39-37. - SETS NEW BASKETBALL RECORDS Ted Burson, sori, of Mr. and Mrs. Al Burson of Syracuse, is one of the three seniors on the William Penn college Statesmen’s basketball squad. He has set three new records to lead the Penn team in scoring for the 62-63 season- ° Ted broke his own one-year record of 444 points with a 23 point effort at Buena Vista in the last game of the season. His now total is 447 points. During the season he made, 166 field goals, 115 free throws and captured 291 rebounds. His average was 18.6 points per game. Not only that but he was 4th scorer in the lowa conference and was selected as forward on the second team of this conference. Other Records He also broke Bill Kildow’s (a 1959 graduate of Penn college) three-year mark of 1146 by scoring 1209 in his last three seasons rat Penn. Ted also established a new career total for a four-year period by scoring a total of 1559 points. Ted is a 1959 graduate of Syracuse high school. He played on the basketball varsity during his junior and senior years and participated in Kross country.
SYRACUSE COIN CLUB NEWS The Syracuse Coin club met Thursday evening, March 7, at the Syracuse Legion Hall and plans for a coin show to be held sometime during the summer were discussed. A committee consisting of four persons to handle this event was appointed. A member was also appointed to approach the bank for permission to have a coin display there during National Coin Week. , The door prize, a 1932-D cent and a 1927-D cent was receved by Gene Felts.
