Harness Racing Featured In Chicago During Mid-Winter
A startling new venture, harness racing in the heart of winter, will -start at Chicago’s. Washington Park, Friday, Feb. 22, for a 26day meet. With accommodations for thousands of customers in glass inclosed and 72 degree heated stands with a parking lot for 15,000 cars!, where shuttle busses will take customers from the parking area to the stands, something new will be tried in j sports with this midwinter opening of horse racing in the, midwest. Admission-Agates open at 6 p. m. ; post time 8:15. Modie J. i Spiegel, Chicago Harness Racing president and head of one of the world’s largest, mail order firms, revealed a massive promotion and giveaway program for this meet. .Every night of the 26 racing nights 200 gifts, ranging from a Thunderbird, a $5,000 mink coat or a trip to Europe for two, color televisions, outboard motors, diamond watches and tape recorders will be given away. Milford At Syracuse In a resumption of their hard fought county tournament encounter, Syracuse and Milford fought it out in an overtime thriller which saw the nod going to revenge minded Syracuse, 77-70. Syracuse led at the end of each rest stop by scores of 17-12, 34-28, and 47-45, but in the final frame Milford outscored the host team, 19-17, to end regulation play with the 64-64 deadlock- John Longenbaugh, one of Kosciusko county’s real good freshman players, took charge for Syracuse in the overtime period netting 6 points. This, combined with Pat Money’s 4 tallies, .enabled the Jackets to capture the victory. Money, Longenbaugh, and Zimmerman paced Syracuse with 26, 24, and 17 joints. Holderread, Dewart, Groves, and Mishler all finished in double figures with 13,13, 12 and 11 counters. Totals: Syracuse (77) Money 10-6-3, Zimmermah 653, M. Jones 310, Thornburg 002, Crow 113, Longenbaugh 964, Brewer 001, totals 29-19-16. The Ulinbis Central will operate special trains to the track and with the completion of the Dan Ryan Expressway, bus and automobile transportation will be reduced to 28 minutes from the loop. ’ Washington Park -is located at Homewood, 111., just south of Chicago and with the opening of this new winter season in horse racing, will now have harness and running horse racing in all four seasons of the year. This track and accommodations are considered the best in the midwest. The hundreds of throughbred racing horses used in this meet will be supervised by the Illinois Harness Racing Commission. N. Cromwell At No. Webster Cromwell fouled host North Webster only eleven times, but 'capitalized on 24 out of 31 of their own free throw attempts in tripping the Trojans, 50-46. a North Webster, trailing throughout, outscored their rival from the field, 19-13, but were plagued by personsals. Milford At Leesburg The Milford-Leesburg *game, which was scheduled to be played on January 25 but postponed because of the cold weather, was played last evening (Wednesday) in the the Leesburg gym with Leesburg winning 45-43. The game was a close one and hard fought all the way with Leesburg leading 10-8 at the end of I the first stop and Milford out- | scoring the Blazers by four points in quarter to lead 2624 at the half. Milford held a one point leaax at the end of the third but Leesburg finished the game with the two point advantage. Leesburg’s Brown led the scoring with p.7 points, while Tom Holderrbqd led the Trojans with 11- . Akron At Pierceton In a slow, ragged ball game, as Akron attempted a control game, taking only 10 shots from the field in the first half and 26 shots to Pierceton’s 52 for the entire game, the Cubs went on to win 71 to 39 before the smallest home crowd of the season at the Pierceton gym, last Friday night. Thirteen players saw action for Pierceton while Akron used eight, with there of them fouling out during the game. Gdrth Cone led the Cubs and all scorers with 22 points followed by Wayne Carlin with 13. Darrell Valentine led Akron with 12 followed by Groninger with 11. The site of the Cubs next game with Etna. Green Friday night has been changed to Bourbon to make room for more fans as the two sets of Cubs fight it out for second place in the county basketball standings. Pierceton takes a 16 win four loss record to the game while Etna Green posts a 16 win 3 loss record. Milford-Leesburg Lions Ball Game At Milford Tonight The much-heralded Milford and Leesburg Lions basketball game will be played at the Milford gym at 8 p. m. tonight (Thursday). The Milford “Maulers” and Leesburg “Lions” are sure to bring an evening of fun, at which game many new wrinkles in the favorite Hoosier game are sure to develop. On the Milford team, managed by Lion John Replogle, are James Allen, Jerald Van Meter, Leon Newman, John Augsburger, Pat Ritter, Silas Howard, John Strouse, Phil Campbell and John Haughey. The .Leesburg team is managed by Lion Richard Klopenstein. At 7:15 four Milford third grade teams will play. Hear Lumber Story At the. Monday night meeting of the Milford Lions at th£ Melody Case the “Lumber Story” was told by Don Grate, a representative of Dierke Forest Products, Inc. Sport Shorts Glen Kammerer (1962-state collegiate scoring champion) has been selected to play with the 1963 Venture for Victory basketball team. The team will travel throughout the Far East preaching and playing ball. • Clark Crafton (Milfbrd) scored 16 points In a losing effort against Taylpr last Saturday. Dennis Horn (Warsaw) tallied 4 and Lamar .' Kilmer (Syracuse) 2 points for Manchester college evening. The Spartans lost to Anderson, 82-54. ) East Chicago Roosevelt pasted Niles, Mich., 86-59, Saturday night. Niles is one of the better Michigan teams and Roosevelt was conquered by Mentone’in the Elkhart holiday tournament. Columbus (19-0) blitzed .highly touted Anderson, 102-86, Saturday.' The Ihss was the first for .the Indians in two years on t{ieir new home 4 court. The 102 points was also a gym record. > ( Mentone and Columbia City look like the teams to beat in the sectional. Mentone fans feel the Bulldogs have eally been coming recently, and Columbia City just captured the Northeastern Indiana Conference crown. Both clubs have been ranked among the top 25 in recent weeks. Jack Walsh (of Trenton, N. J., lifted 76 50-pound weights plus a 435-poiind platform.
