Pierceton, Mentone, Etna Green And Webster Are Week End Winners
Pierceton At Webster Last Friday nlgnt at North Webster the Cubs had to come from behind in the second half to post a solid 66 to 49 win. . After falling behind a hustling Webster team at 27 to 26 shortly after the start of the .second half, the Cubs were aroused and ripped off a 401 point last half and made up for a first half that had them making many mistakes coupled with poor shooting. Poor ball handeling plagued Pierceton as a total of 19 errors were made, 10 in the second quarter alone. Webstef did not get an offensive rebound in the second half and the Cubs were able to get 68 shots to the Trojans 48. Each team had foul trouble but Pierceton had their 21 fouls divided between seven players while Webster had three players with four and one with 5, for a total of 17. Neither team were hitting free throws. Balanced scoring again was evident for Pierceton, as Rick Kerr and Garth Cone had 14 each, Ray Slusher 12, all in the list half, followed by Robin Stickney and Phil Conley with 9 each. Wayne Carlin made 7. Coach Tom Sittier used 11 players for the Cubs while Webster held to 6 with Rhoades heading their scorers with 14 points followed by Jones with 13. The Trojans went virtually all the way to knotch the victory, they led 13-17 at the end of. one and 28-22 at the half. Claypool rallied to knot the score 36-36 lateen the third, but North Webster recovered to lead 40-38 at the conclusion of three. They continued this trendwell into the fourth stanza, but Blazers, at one stage, scored twelve consecutive points ana were back in the game with three minutes remaining. The early lead held up for the Cubs, however, and they won their 13th* victory against 3 losses. Leesburg is now 3 and 12. Milford At Mentone Mentone’s Bulldogs, with a record single game point production, shook Milford, 114 to 69, Friday evening. The Bulldogs have had several 100 point offensive shows this and are, no doubt, the highest scoring team in county history. Bill Nellans had 31, Jerry Ryman 30, and Allen Creighton 25 to pace Mentone. This is not only balance, its incredible. On top of this, nine of the ten Mentone players tallied. Mentone led, 19-11, at the conclusion of one, 46-31 at Half, and 75-48 at the end of three. Then, a terrific 39 point outburst in the final stanza produced the*gigantic score. County Coaches in Benefit Game Next Wednesday . The Kosciusko county coaches will play the National Football League Chicago Bears in a benefit basketball game Wednesday, Feb. 13, which will be played in the Warsaw Community high school gym. The game is sponsored by Volture Locale Na. 833 and will be played for the benefit of nurses training scholarships and the county child welfare programs which are sponsored by the 40 et 8 of the American Legion. The Bears will receive a per centage of the gate. Area coaches Donnie Butts and Bud Lantz of North Webster, Rollin Cutter of Syracuse, Jerald Van Meter and James Allen of Milford, Bob Holcomb of Leesburg, Tom Sittier of Pierceton and Bill Dorsey of Sidney are joining hands with the other county coaches to make the game possible. The team will be coached by Paul Baterfian of Mentone, coach of this year’s county championship team, and Floyd Baker, former assistant coach at Noirth Webster who retired after tnte 1961-62 basketball season. \ Milford Freshmen Win Tourney After a long delay in the Lakeland school’s freshman tourney because of sub-zero temperatures the final game of the tourney Was played last Thursday evening with the young Milford Trojans coming out with the championship honors. They defeated North Webster 38-32 on the Webster floor. In the first gantes of the tourney, which were played in North Webster on January 22, Milford defeated Syracuse and North Webster defeated Leesburg. In the consolation; game Thursday evening Syracuse defeated Leesburg. Milford took the lead in- the first quarter leading at the end 13 to 6, Webster made a strong attempt and nine points in the second quarter while Milford only scored four points,,thus cutting Milford’s lead to five points at the end of the half. The score at the end of the third stanza still showed ‘ Milford ahead 23 to 20 and at the end of the game the Trojans from Milford were ahead 38-32.

Sport Shorts I The word, from Jim’s Tackle' Box (North Webster) is that Slim Bransford and Harry Wolfe have caught some big bass in recent weeks. Slim has snagged two, one weighing 6% pounds, Che other an even seven. Both fish were caught on Webster Lake. Harry caught two from Kuhn Lake, each weighed right at six pounds. Fishermen on Webster Lake report the ice to be 28 inches in depth. Many of the county lakes are speckled with automobiles as well as fishermen. ♦ • * Through the week ending January 26, Chet Kammerer (Leesburg) high scoring Grace College forward, ranked third among state collegiate point makers. The last listing showed his production to be 287 points with 2 24.2 average. In national rankings, Chet is in 24th place. * * * Both archers and shot gunners set new records on deer kills during; the 1962 season.
