[ REMEMBER WHEN ; IT HAPPENED IN ; SYRACUSE
ONE YEAR AGO One hundred and twenty-five dollars was cleared at the Holiday Charity Ball held Friday night at Hoosier Skateland. A dedication service was held Sunday afternoon at the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel for the new addition of a social room, classrooms in the basement of the social room and a vestibule where members snd visitors can hang their coats. The directors of the SyracuseWawasee Water Safety organization met at the American Legion hall Dec. 13 with 21 present. Officers re-elected were: President, Robert Rule; vice president, Leila Connolly; secretary, Mrs. Richard Rondot; treasurer, Mrs. Arlene Mohler. FIVE YEARS AGO “Greetings” The very word “Christmas” brings back memories of childhood days. It is probably the most joyous time of the year. God’s great gift in Christ has given joy and happiness to multitudes. When the angel preached the first Christmas sermon, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will toward men,” he announced that God through His Son would visit men, to guide their feet in the path of grace. All who heard the shepherds’ story wondered at the things which were spoken, “on earth peace.” Talking about peace is not enough. There is a higher and better response to the Christmas message than mere interest and wonder. Mary kept all these sayings and pondered them in her heart . . . the shepherds returned to their flocks glorifying God. How privileged we are to pause in the hurried stress of modem life and go back in spirit to the meager bed, “God manifest in the flesh.” Rejoice greatly in your hearts and homes and churches for this “unspeakable gift of God.” A blessed Christmas and may Christ abide in your hearts.—By the Rev Carl Sorensen. TEN YEARS AGO A special meeting was held by the Royal Arch Masonic lodge on Monday night to honor William C. Gants, who was presented a 50year award by Everett Dunn for the local chapter. “The Rose of Christmas” is the theme of the Christmas cantata to be given Sunday night, Dec. 21, by the Methodist church choir with Blair Laughlin, director, at the Syracuse Methodist church. Pioneer History The first road through the township followed the old Indian trail from White Pigeon through Goshen to Huntington, which the Indians called the “place of flints.” The internal improvement bill passed by the legislature in 1836 called for a canal connecting Fort Wayne and Michigan City. The right of way was surveyed and rumor had it that it would pass through one corner of the township which caused the boom of land in this vicinity. The thinly populated backwoods could scarcely float a million dollar enterprise; the sod was never turned. It had to be content with roads for which the three per cent fund was used, derived from sale of lands. Each taxpayer had to do road work regularly or pay some one else to do it for him. Communication was by word of mouth in the beginning; travelling was done on horseback or on foot. One early writer tells of hearing about the great divide, an important trail whence two streams starting within a few feet of each other flowed in different directions, one towards the Elkhart river. Farmers walked to Milford with their butter and lard to trade them for supplies and to hear the latest news from the outside world. The mail stage began its trips over the Goshen road once a week; on the evening it was brought to town a representative
