by Ron Brown ■ A talented New Paris quintet had no trouble downing Milford Friday night. The Cubs continued with their winning ways by beating Milford 68-42. Milford, playing one of their poorest games, was dealt its fifth loss, against one win here, Friday night. The first quarter was quite close with New Paris leading 1211. North Webster Gains First Victory, Leesburg Blue Blazers Lose 67-51
By Edwin Blue
AT NORTH WEBSTER North Webster displayed a balanced scoring effort in defeating Wolf Lake 79-57. The game, which was played Tuesday evening, gave indication that Coach Butt’s boys may be finding the range. The 79 point total marks the second consecutive week that the Trojans have connected for over 70 points, and two Trojans—Rick Baker and Jack Rhoades—have been hitting around the twenty point mark pretty consistent of late. North Webster sprang to an early lead, and gained the first quarter edge at 18-13. A 26 point effort in the second frame gave the Trojans the halftime lead of 44-31. This margin was increased at the end of three by a 64-43 count, and from this stage the Trojans coasted to the 22 point victory. Rick Baker canned 26 points to pace the North Webster attack, but Jack Rhoades, Mark Jones and Chad Beezley helped greatly with 20, 15 and 10. Craig Baker making his first start netted 8 points. Kesling and Targgart led the Wolves with 15 and 12 points respectively. North Webster (79) Jones 4 75, Beezley 3 44, Rhoades 8 4 4, R, Baker 11 4 3, C. The Blazers, after falling behind in the early stages, started to peck away at the Larwill lead and were down by only 30-24 by the half. The tough Trojans from Whitley county pulled away during the third quarter and coasted to the victory in the last frame. Kerry Boggs played his best game of the year, and netted 13 points to pace Leesburg. Everette Dausman netted only 9 points, far below his usual output. SPORT SHORTS Mentone received its first real test last Friday. Their opponent, Northfield, fought the Bulldogs to the wire, but a couple of newcomers Jerry Ryman (Atwood) and Jerry Stouder (Nappanee) : connected for 16 points between them, in the final quarter, to extend Mentone’s undefeated record to six. North Webster and Leesburg each has a player among the top ten in the county individual scoring race. Jack Rhoades (North Webster) has scored 98 points in fixe games for a 19.6 average, and Everette Dausman (Leesburg) has 119 points in seven games for an average of 17 points per game. It is interesting to note that the leading point producer in the county is a sophomore. Garth Cone, Pierceton guard, has netted 151 points in eight games for a per game average of 18.9. Another underclassman, Frosh star / Bob Arnold of Silver Lake, has/iallied 109 points in 7 games—an average of 15.6 per game. Akron’s loss to Clay Twp, was their 6th consecutive defeat of the year and the 26th in a row over the last two seasons. . Here’s a record! In 1935, Tom Morris skipped rope along the public highways of Australia for 28 consecutive days. He traveled 590 miles, the distance from Melbourne to Sydney. It took 472,000 hops, about six and a half feet per hop. My father claims that he once saw a two pound Bulegill. Being rather distrustful of dad’s data, I decided to look up a few fishy records. Here they are— the largest Bluegill ever caught weighed four pounds, twelve ounces. This factual fish was taken from Kentona Lake, Alabama. The largest fresh water Bass weighed 22 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 32 inches in length. It was taken from Montgomery Lake, Georgia.
Did you know that over 40,000,000 sharks are caught annually and, are sought mainly for their hide. That the Menhaden is caught in greater quantities than any other fish. 1,300,000,000 are caught annually, but they are not used for eating purposes. The game of the week will no doubt be the Mentone - Pierceton clash. Pierceton, fresh from victories over Silver Lake and Larwill, should provide ample opposition for the Bulldogs. The contest will be held in the Mentone gym Friday Evening. 8166 MT BAR6AIN IM TOWN QUR CIASSIFIED ADS
