A Question To Decide A tough decision is facing school officials at Mentone and members of the Tippecanoe Valley school 1: board. , It is public knowledge that several members of the Mentone basketball team have been charged with stealing livestock and selling their loot on the market. In fact, three of the boys are outstanding members of the Mentone Bulldogs. Two were found guilty and given probationary sentences. The three dressed with their team Friday night when Mentone played North Webster. The question is: Should these boys be allowed to play basketball? The question is being raised all over the county, and needless to say, many people think they should not. Just what offense must one commit to be excluded from high school sports? High school athletes are very much the Friday night heroes of their schools and town alike. If these boys want this esteem, they must earn it. And stealing livestock is not one of the ways to earn public prestige. If these boys are allowed to play on the Mentone team this year, it would look very much like we are putting far to much emphasis on high school basketball. Pierceton Has Cheering Block Something new and thrilling in this season’s basketball games is the spirited Pierceton cheering block. About 100 Pierceton girls have organized into an effective block, exercising colorful and precision movements, at the instruction of their cheerleaders. The girls, wearing blouses red in front and white in back, have been practicing three weeks under instructor Bill Schuldt. Cheereladers are Jayne Tuttle, Becky Gebert, Cinda Wright and Sharon Weaver. County C. D. Director Speaks At At Milford Lions
Milo Clase, Kosciusko county civil defense director, spoke to the Milford Lions club at the Melody Case Monday night, outlining the significance of an adequate civil defense plan for Milford. He said he would like to see a plan set up for Milford, as he would for all county towns, in case of an emergency. “The American people are apathetic about civil defense until we get a bomb scare as we did several weeks ago,” Clase said. “Then they want something done right now.” His job is to alert people to the dangers of too much apathy, he said. ] Clase said we would have four to six hours’ notice between the time, of a bomb attack and the radiation dangers. “That is, providing we are not in the immediate blast area,” he said. A ceiling above any bomb Reiter should have a density of MOO pounds per square foot for protection against the deadly gamma rays. With Mr. Clase was Jim Allison of Warsaw who is interested in civil defense. Ladies’ Night The Milford Lions are planning a ladies' night for Monday, Nov. 19, at the M and M Case south of North Webster. Tickets are now on sale. Guests at the Monday night meeting were C. R. Shuder, Lowell Rassi, John Replogle, and Ed Charlton and Darrell Phillips of the Leesburg Lions club.
