: ALONG : hb the im TRAIL — WELL, HERE IT IS! The last week before the November 6th election. Apprehension is beginning to mount with candidates and public alike. Candidates are being heard to say. “My, what a large county this is!” And it is that. Kosciusko county is said to be the third largest county in the state in square miles. Any candidate who tries a door-to-door campaign soon runs out of steam and finds what an impossible job this is. CANDIDATES ON BOTH tickets feel confident that their efforts will bear fruit next Tuesday. Someone 'will be disillusioned, to be sure, since there will be a winner and a loser, but this confidence is testimony to the public’s kindness toward hard-working candidates. THIS YEAR there has been a noticable absence of telephone pole posters, but an abundance of bumper stickers. We have been told in some cases motorists have been offended where bumper stickers have been put on their cars without permission. ' ' " 1- ■ • ■ 3 TURKEY CREEK township appears more and more a real battle ground in this election. Candidates are campaigning there more aggressively this year than in the past, we’re told. The raid on the American Legion post there no doubt has something to do with that. Sheriff Sam Holbrook whose department staged the raid is coming in' for heavy criticism for that action. However, other areas in the county praise his efforts toward gambling of any sort. Net result:- One cancels out the other. TRUSTEE FACES ARE causing some local interest in next Tuesday’s race in several townships. In Washington township, for example Claud Stahl is the Democratic candidate for trustee, and Donald Bailey, former town police officer in Pierceton, is the Republican candidate. Both are well liked young* men with political ambitions. Interest is running high there. Incumbent Charles Outcelt, is not running for re-election. ' SCHOOL ELECTION is taking some of the interest from the political election. This is particularly true in the northeast and southwest parts of the county. In the Lakeland school district, 17 candidates are running for the school board in the five districts. Only five will win. Not much out-and-out campaigning is being done, but interest is high. Several candidates are giving out cards, several are using book matches, and Wallace W. Huffman of Leesburg has been giving out a neat little 4-page leaflet, informing voters of his qualifications. All such campaigning has been in good taste. A REPUBLICAN BLITZ in Kosciusko county was held Wednesday when Young Republicans conducted their “Chariots for Charlie.” CECIL SILVEUS, Democratic candidate for commissioner from the southern district, received a letter from superintendent Forbes last week stating he had complaints concerning his hiring a substitute bus driver while he is campaigning. He is being made to do his own bus driving. “I didn’t know I was hurting them that much,” candidate Silveus stated. He said the move was one to keep him from campaigning in the Turkey Creek township area. A Republican candidate for the same office hire a substitute driver for the same reason four years ago and nothing was said about that, he mused. BOOK FOR INCREASED effort to get registered voters to the polls this year. Money is being used to hire drivers by both parties for election day activities. It could make the “big difference,” several candidates think.
Truck Looted Os $2,000 Trucker Gail Finney of Syracuse told police that someone broke into his truck cab late Monday night, Oct. 22, while he was eating at a Marion truck stop and took about $2,000 in cash and checks. - Finney stated to police sargent Elzroth Bilko of Marion that he had stopped at the Trucktel for something to eat and when he returned about ten minutes later, the truck had been looted. The truck belongs to the Indiana Merchandise Company of Fort Wayne. GIVE PEDESTRIANS A BRAKE Throughout the month of November, citizens of this community — motorists and pedestrians alike — are urged to be particularly cooperative in the area of pedestrain SAFETY. November has always had a high pedestrain fatality toll in the past. Weekend shopping is especially hazardous at this time of the year, with the heavy fog and freezing rain that settles over Indiana during this last month of autumn, traffic conditions become very hazardous indeed. Fogged-over windshields, faulty defrosters and wiper blades add to the drivers difficulty in seeing persons on foot, people walking to and from shopping centers and department stores, their arms loaded with bulky packages, make perfect targets for the careless drivers. Add this to the pedestrians limited visibility and you have the potential of an accident ready to hapen. Thanksgiving week end marks the beginning followed up by Christmas and Ney Years. The two biggest contributors to pedestrian-auto accidents last year were motorists who failed to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and on foot who crossed between intersections. These two alone accounted for about half of the 4141 injuries received by pedestrians. There is no Substitute for courtesy, so give the pedestrian a brake.
