SYRACUSE School News

Senior News Rain, rain, go away . . . That's the song many seniors were ringing last Saturday during our* car wash. Since that project failed the seniors ’are busy bees trying to hum up some new money-making projects. Rewards came in this week to magazine salesmen who sold three or more bonus subscriptions. There prizes ranged from stuffed toy animals to hair dryers and table radios. Also, we chose our class colors and caps and gowns for commencement. It may seem a little early for these decisions, but remember how rapidly the senior year always passes. — Vicki Firestone | Pep Rally The annual student sponsored pep rally and bonfire will be held Thursday, Nov. 1. The lot behind the school will be the site of the bonfire which will last from 6:30 to 8. Let’s everybody get out and really back our boys. They will play much better knowing that the school is behind them 100 per cent. — Steve Carlson English Is Changing The study of the English language in the eighth grade is undergoing a great change. You no longer study out of plain little books with a few black and white pictures, and a lot of words, dots, and sentences. Today we still have an English textbook, but it has changed. More simple ways of learning have been discovered. We have an experimental textbook called English 2600. It’s a scientific program in grammar and usage. English 2600 has 2,600 questions. When you ask" a question, you turn the page and there’s 1 the answer! We also have a scholastic unit, consisting of several paper-bound books which w’e can read and discuss. We have the • SRA reading program, the EDL controlled reading, •tachistoscop'e. exercises, and v the regular literature arid spelling textbooks. We had better not blink our eyes, or we might miss something! — Tim Yeager Syracuse Cub Scouts Meet A new scouting year has begun and Cub Scout Pack 28 held "‘its first pack meeting Tuesday evening, Oct. 23. Former Milford Chief Os Police Condition Serious Jack Klopenstein of Nappanee, a former resident of Milford and chief of police here, is in serious condition in the St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester, Minn. The Klopenstein family was returning from a vacation in the northern state when Mr. Klopenstein suddenly became ill and had to be admitted to the hospital. A spinal X-ray was taken on Saturday evening and another on Wednesday. There has been no indication from the hospital as to what caused Mr. Klopenstein’s illness. His condition is so serious that Mrs. Klopenstein is only allowed to visit him, five minutes out of every two hours. Mr. and Mrs. William Lung of Syracuse, parents of Mrs. Klopenstein, went to Rochester earlier this week and brought the Klopenstein children back to Indiana.
