tainment. She had a major part in last / season’s entertainment here and received many compliments. More Syracuse History In 1834, pioneers came into Syracuse. Some came by canal boat as far inland as possible then westward on the Lima Road; a few pushed farther north from the counties settled earlier in the century. Most of them however came from Pennsylvania or Ohio in covered wagons which were mired in mud and roads had to be cut for miles; vicissitudes and difficulties surely beset these early travellers on their journey westward. They survived and pros- J pered, they who already had a background of one hundred years or more of pioneering in the colonies. The lands of Turkey Creek were placed on the market early in 1833; the land office was at LaPorte. The prairies to the west did not attract our type of pioneer; he . had the idea that land which would not grow timber would not grow good grain crops. A land boom was experienced here in 1936; one paid as much as SIOOO or SI2OO for a section of land. The settler usually chose and staked his land, blazed some trees to mark it, built a half-face camp, then hurried ' lover the prairie “trace” to La- ( J Porte to enter his land.
