Tips For Better Golf ■— By Pro Don Byrd Wawasee Golf Course

These shots demand more of you than your iron shots, because these require a greater arc. The greater the arc the more any mistake will be accentuated. The driver without doubt is one of the three most important clubs in the bag. The three most important clubs are — driver, putter and wedge. I have never heard of a good top notch golfer who didn’t excell with all three Os these clubs. (Don’t ever let anyone tell you Sam Snead isn’t good with all three of these clubs —on many other fine players.) Here as always, maintain a steady head position. Bend your body at the waist slightly, but keep your back reasonably straight. Keep your arms comfortably close to each other in order to suggest each could be an extension of the club. You must never hit first with j the hands from the top Os the i swing. This will always result in ; a poorly hit shot. By hitting from j the top with the hands first—you j expend your important power by : uncocking’ the wrists too soon; you throw the club away from , your body so the club head travels from the outside and cuts across the ball; you throw the clubhead and power at the ground instead of through the hitting area at the target; and many other ills setm < from this common fault. ] After taking the club on a full < arc on the backswing the first j move of the downswing is the . placement of the left heel on the , ground, with a resulting uncoiling ; of the hips, which in turn pulls the : arms and hands into a strong hitting position. Note in the above picture the right arm has moved in very close to, and is working with, the right side. Also, the wrists have not uncocked, and will not uncock until the very last instant. This is the only way you can Insure getting maximum power from your body and your hands at the point of impact.
