Pastor's Column By REV. KEITH SMITH . Pastor Zion Chapel Radiance or not, still you say, J am a Christian. “Why are some Christians not radiant?” is one of the questions that W. E. Sangster asks in his book “The Secret oj Radiant Life.” When one is a Christian in the truest sense of the word he has Christ living within him, then he ought to radiate Christ’s personality without. As we who identify ourselves with Christ live our daily lives do others say of us, he looks like he is missing something in life or do we radiate such joy that others

feel they cannot afford to miss what we have. Take a plant that has been sitting in a certain position before a window glass and face the bent leaves away from the glass and in a very short time the rays of the sun will draw the leaves back towards the glass. Likewise the radiance of our lives should draw others to the Christ that ought to be beaming out of our lives. The word radiant has the idea of reflecting light as well as emitting light. The mirror or the crystal of a watch will reflect light. If our lives are radiant they will reflect Christ. Why are some Christians not radiant? The reason could well be that some Christians have surrendered their “wills” to Christ but have never given Christ full control of their minds. Christ has

to reshape one’s thinking from his former life to his new life of faith before a radiant life can be seen. “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Let us note a ftw words from Dr. Sangster: "These joyless powerless Christians acknowledge Christ as Lord and may do nothing deliberately to displease him, but their thinking continues on the old level; and so fear and inferior, ity, restlessness and resentment, pride and complaining can still have a major place in this life. So far as the mind is concerned, Christ is not in them. Sometimes knowingly — but usually unknowingly they have kept Christ out of their thinking and they are almost the same defeated people that they were before they took him as Lord.” The Apostle Paul said, “Do not be conformed to this world but

The dignity of willing labor is one of the principles which Christianity has established among us. It is a natural by-product of a faith whose founder was the Carpenter of Nazareth, whose first adherents were fishermen of Galilee. Those who are eager to serve God and their fellow men find rich opportunities in the life of the Church. There are tasks for a man’s hands, for his voice, for his pen, for his mind. There are needs that our offerings cannot supply . . . challenges that call for the talents and time of earnest men and women. That friendly church which inspires us on Sunday is busy with the Lord’s work all week. That man in the next pew is finding new happiness in willing Christian service. Are you? be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” “Have this mind -in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Be radiant—Christian. (Editor’s note: Rev. Keith Smith of Huntington attends the Huntington’s college of the United Brethren in Christ church, submitted this week’s pastor’s column. He is the pastor of the Zion Chapel church south of Syracuse.) ‘Spirit’ Is Christian Scierice Lesson For Sunday The practical value of striving for perfection will be stressed at Christian Science church services Sunday. “Spirit” is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon to be read. It will include this admonition of Christ Jesus (Matthew 5): “Be ye there-

fore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Among the correlative citations to be read from "Science and Health with Key to the Sriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy is the following: “The divine demand, *Be ye therefore perfect,’ is scientific,, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable. Individuals are consistant who, watching and praying, can ‘run, and not be weary; . . . walk, and i not faint,’ who gain good rapidly | and hold their position, or attain! slowly and yield not to discouragement. God requires perfection but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought and the victory won” (p. 253).
