A “news story” in the Warsaw “rape-wreck-and, scandall” Times Union on June 22, written no doubt by Ronald Sharp (unsigned) states that pay raises for Syracuse marshals is news to town board president Byron Connolly. I do not know r of course, whether or

not Mr. Connolly actually made the statement attributed to him or whether this is another figment of the mind dreamed up by “Sharpie.” The facts of the case are that on the evening of May 15 two members fo' the board instructed the cferk-treasurer to draw up an ordances dated that day increasing salaries as follows: Chief $375 per month, and deputy to $350 per month. ' I told Mr. Connolly that same

night (at the board meeting) of these instructions and asked his reaction. He stated that he would rather see a sls per month raise than the $25 that was ordered by Harry I*. Coy and Harry Nicolai. On June 5 the ordinance (No. 51) was signed giving the $25 per month. Mr. Connolly’s signature appears on the original ordinance, as does that of.Harry L. Coy. Mr. Nicolai did not sign, due to his absence that night. The “news” story also quoted Mr. Connolly as stating that the raise in pay would give the chief marshal a salary of $5,800 per year, and to deputy marshals a salary of $4,500. Multiplying the monthly salary of $375 by 12 gives a total of $4,500 for the chief

marshal, and a monthly salary of $350 by 12 for the deputy marshals of $4,200. Any citizen may inspect the original ordinance at. the .office of the clerk-treasurer and see where Mr. Connolly signed it in person. Ido not know whether he will plead he was held and forced to signed it or whether he had a lapse of memory. Perhaps the story in the Warsaw paper was news to him — as frequently Sharpie writes stories, puts words in Connolly’s rA>uth he didn’t know he uttered. This is just another lying story by Sharpie. The' trouble is that some people will believe it. This method of causing trouble is used in just the same way by the Com-
munists. It seeks to cause trouble, create confusion, stop responsible citizens from taking part in local government for fear of getting smeared. The Warsaw paper takes a stand against EVERY move made by the majority of the Syracuse town board. They manufacture lies — refuse to publish any statement contrary to their own personal beliefs — and what business has a Warsaw paper attempting to influence Syracuse civic affairs? In carrying accounts of Syracuse town board meetings even the name of the clerk-treasure is left out of all reports by this self-styled political writer who has such an inferiority complex he attacks every one else to draw attention to himself. ■ ■*-' , A man (or a newspaper) who will lie about one thing will lie about all things when it suits his own distorted thinking. The board president apparently does not know what the police were getting nor what they are now getting. J. “Spartan” efforts and wonderful coopeiation in supplying the courier boat for the WOWO crew last Sunday during the Flotilla celebratiox As you “know, everybody who had a chance to ride in the "Century” was delighted with the experience and amazed at the rapidity with which you made contact with the various flotilla elements around the lake. Incidentally, none of us who were present will ever forget the wild chase after the water-skiing gorilla. Jack Underwood is still shaking his head over that one. All in all, we consider the activity a grand success and hope that you folks at Wawasee concur. We are already looking forward to a bigger and better Wawasee Flotilla project in 1963. Thanks again, Ben, for your wonderful help, without which the broadcasts would not have been nearly as interesting. Whether or not they know it, the Wawasee community owes you a citation for effort above and beyond the call of duty. Cordially, Carl W.
