REMEMBER .. . WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ' ORB YEAR AGO David Strieby, son of Mrs. Cleo Strieby, is attending ' Boys’ State at Indiana university this week. A railway express car carrying mail for the area west of Chicago was discovered on fire by Eldred Mabie Monday noon when west bound No. 7 stopped at Syracuse. The smoking car was switched to a siding and the Syracuse firemen were called. The Syracuse Town Plan Commission was asked at a meeting which packed the American Legion Hall June 13 whether it would permit development of new lake homes and property without a Piaster plan for water and sewage treatment. Decision by an 8-2 vote of the board after several hours’ discussion, approved a proposal of the Columbia Realty Company of North Manchester for a 236-acre development with 690 lots on Syracuse. FIVE YEARS AGO Post master Ernest Bushong reported this week that the Syracuse post office will advance to first class from second class beginning July 1. Advancement is based on postal receipts of over $40,000 for the calendar year of : 1956. ’ A fire of unknown orgin early '

' Sunday morning destroyed a twoi story wooden barn on the Gene Ringler farm five miles southwest of town (Syracuse). FIFTEEN TM&&AGO The Wawasee fish festival, staged at Syracuse Saturday evening to celebrate opening of the fishing season at midnight Sunday, drew a large crowd to this resort town for casting exhibitions and meets, contests of many kinds, free acts, free lunch, musical entertainment and awarding of dozens of prizes. Syracuse public schools will be advanced the school year to a full nine-month term according to trustee M. F. Jones. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO plans for a winter carnival on Lake Syracuse were set in motion at this week’s meeting of the town board. Members of the board were unanimous that a winter ice carnival could be promoted in Syracuse and that such an event would attract guests from surrounding communities as well as from Syracuse and Lake Wawasee. . FIFTY YEARS AGO Syracuse people will no doubt be a little surprised to learn that automobiles are being manufactured in our town. At least one machine has emerged from the manufacturer’s and is ready for delivery. Kenneth Harkless is the < builder of this new type of auto. ! He has shown remarkable ingen- ’ uity in overcoming difficulties 1 that would discourage an adult • 1
and he has built It all himself, excepting of course the engine. EIGHTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO Many persons from abroad are making this place a summer resort and during the past few weeks quite a number have been here, an article follows from an out-of-towner. “The fishing excursion that left here last week returned after an absence of three days looking likt> Modocs. We suppose, however, that the change in their complexions was caused by the heat. They report Syracuse one of the loveliest places in the world if it was not for the snakes. The party was compelled to leave a sentinel in camp every day to watch the venomous reptiles and at night they stood on a stump or slept in the tops of trees to keep out of the reach of the monsters. Take away the snakes and Syracuse would be an asylum for consumptive and rheumatic individuals.” ,
DRIBS . . . And . . . Drabs The Flotilla was a huge success, and everyone concerned had a good time. Izzy Stahley advertised the Wawasee Golf Club and we ducked golf clubs all the way around the lake. It was a lot of work, it was worth it; especially when the two little girls with us discovered we were being interviewed by WOWO before the parade started. There were a lot of clever ideas, but I think the < fish was my favorite. One of the oddest things we saw was the woman who waded out shoulder-high, holding a camera high over her head. And bless those people • on shore who waved and cheered as we passed! - ■ Clem Lisor was one of the handsomest fellows in the; parade

- with his natty-looldng outfit The helicopter which landed on the point by the cove before the 5 parade started, soon had a big , audience. Wouldn’t it be fun to fly i over the lake region in one? Spent almost an hour one day, chatting with Anna Crow. Her ’ voice is so soft, you find yourself ‘ literally hanging on every word. The old bachelor said that the quickest way to stop an argument between a man and his wife was to take sides. Good way to get a black eye, too. Annie Lou Robertson got out of a car in front of her Music Center. She was hard to recognize in her sun glasses and gay blouse. Looked like a visiting dignitary. Lois Murray is still perking along and looks marvelous while awaiting their next child.
