JIM RASSI

Meet Your Syracuse-Wawasee Water Safety Instructors

; By 808 RULE The Water Safety Instructors Corps of Syracuse-Wawasee Water Safety Program has once again been depleted by the inevitable “Dan Cupid.” Three very popular instructors of this past season will not be with the program this year: Miss Susan (Susie) Morgan Miss Kay Bender Miss Phyllis Garber air of whom have married since the close of the 1961 swimming program. We feel sure that all «of their students the past season go along with the committee in wishing them the best of everything. Due to the projected training program conducted by the council, properly trained personnel is available to fill these voids. We are sure that all the students of the past season will be happy to hear that Jim Rassi of 501 North Elm street, Nappanee, will again be an instructor in the program. Jim is well liked by everyone who has come in contact with him in this program and, being the senior member of the corps, many of the daily problems have been placed in his hands. Jim is attending Ball State and is majoring in business and psychology. Another young gentleman has been added to the corps this year — Creighton Burns, who is the rather tall (in fact, 6 ft. 4 in,) attractive lad usually found in the vicinity of the beach at city park. Creighton, who is 19 years of age, lives near Cromwell and graduated from Cromwell high school in 1960. He enrolled at Purdue university in the fall of the same year and has just completed his sopho-

more year at Purdue, where he js working on a degree in physical education and minoring in social studies and biology. After graduation he plans to become a high school coach and teacher. Creighton is quite an accomplished pitcher on the Purdue baseball team. He completed both senior life saving and water safety instructor training at Purdue under the direction of O. L. Agnew. Last summer he worked at Chain-O-Lakes state park near Albion as a life guard. He served in the capacity of captain of the guard and taught swimming courses, which is part of the park swimming program. We are sure you will find Creighton to be very much on a par with Jim Rassi in this field of endeavor and the program committee expects much from Creighton this year. A third member of the teaching staff is Sue A. Balsley. Sue came to this program from Bremen. She is a student at Ball State Teachers college in Muncie, where she is majoring in physical education and minoring in social science. Sue received her water safety instructor’s training this year at the National Red Cross Aquatic school, which was held at Camp Limberlost at Oliver Lake. She states that she loves to work with children very much and during her summer school vacation has worked as an assistant park supervisor in the recreation program at Bremen. Recommendations received in behalf of Sue state that she did very well in this program and was well loved by the chil- ' dren. We feel certain that all of

her students will gain much under , her supervision. By the way, her nickname is “Sam.” The fourth member of the teaching corps is Sue Ann Juday, who lives locally. She is 19 years of age, attended Syracuse high school and Wittenberg university, where she majored in physical education and elementary education. Sue received her water safety instructor’s training while at Wittenberg. While she was not a bona fide member of the program in 1961, she did much in the way of teaching the swimming courses during the summer—not just for personal gain, but because of her extreme interest —in the aquatic program. Sue is also a member of the Water Ski club. We feel certain that all of the students under Sue in the program this year will most certainly be well taken care of, and should gain very much from her tutoring. Due to the extremely high enrollment in this year’s program (1600 plus) it was deemed necessary to put on a fifth member of

the teaching staff, inasmuch as the classes were much too large for the usual four instructors. The fourth member who is the rookie is Bonnie Lou Brouwer. Bonnie is well known locally, living on North Shore Drive in Syracuse. She will be 19 in September. Bonnie graduated from Syracuse high school and has entered Indiana .university, finishing her freshman year this past season. Bonnie is planning to major in physical education and to minor in speech. While at the university this past season, Bonnie completed her water safety instructor’s training course. From observation and comment on Bonnie’s work this past week, she is performing in the swimming instruction field like a veteran. Much time and effort has been spent by the Syracuse-Wawasee Water Safety Program Committee in screening these applicants for the teaghing of your children during thisyl96l season. The Committee is once again very proud of the high caliber of
