Pastor's " Column THE TROUBLE IS By JASON MARTIN Pastor of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel The earth is an uncomfortable place to live. People who gaze too far into the future are made restless when they recognize death staring at them. Looking back is no better for it only forces the realization that the past cannot be recaptured. You say those are not pleasant prospects. What of the present ? It is all that remains for us. Life is lived in the present; but even the time we now haVe has the discourteous habit of hacking to

shreds our search for security. Somebody saves a little wealth and invests in stocks. Then, as some people learned recently, the Wall Street Bear may devour that effort at security. Another fellow buys real estate with a nice house for his wife and the children he loves. But he gets worried about the kids’ health because Khrush- ! chev and Kennedy are making menacing mushroom clouds. Mushrooms are good in the skillet, he knows, but not in the stratosphere. Those mushroom clouds pretty well put in a nutshell what it is that makes life uncomfortable: people have not learned how to live together. Science, education, and industry have introduced marvels. But meanwhile we plod along with natures unchanged since Christopher Columbus. It seems

You are witnessing one of the frustrations in Ted’s life. Like his namesake, the Red Sox slugger, Ted likes to tag a good fast ball and send it over the fence. But, today, our batting-practice pitcher just can’t seem to find the plate. Another frustration in Ted’s life will occur next Sunday morning. Like every American youngster Ted needs religious training. But Ted’s parents, who should be

like human nature Is outdated. l The trouble is not in the earth i that we are uncomfortable; it is i in us. Does God have any word to ’ speak to our troubled world? If our plight were not so convincing I suppose he would chuckle at our bizarre efforts at self-improvement. There is something humorously crazy about an Adolph Hitler. His self-improve-ment scheme was to establish heaven on earth with his Thousand Year Reich. A few years later the Reich was only rubble. The Bible insists that there is something wrong with people. That something is found in their relationship to God. The intended relationship between man and God has been destroyed. The result is a disruption of healthy personality structure. Man was

. made for union with God. The 1 world’s problems indicate that the 1 essential union does not exist. When peopleware not 1n contact with God their'personalities become deeply disturbed. The only solution to this problem is reunion with God. The Bible presents a God who is concerned about man. God’s solution to man’s problem was to bring the human race back to himself. He has invited us back. The invitation came to us through k God who himself visited the human family. God’s concern for us was expressed in his willingness to i die for our benefit. The invitation to return to God , still stands. Read the CLASSIFIEDS
THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the buildirg of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why ever>,person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (I) For his own sake. (2) For. his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation; (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.

Keynoting the Lesson-Sermon entitled “Sacrament” is the Golden Text from the Bible (Galatians 3): “Ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Readings from “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy will include: “To keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done. Outward worship is not of itself sufficient to express loyal and heartfelt gratitude, since he has said: ‘lf ye love me, keep my commandments’ ’’ (p. 4).
