Milford Alumni May 26 Draws Over 300, Bob Brown New President
Robert Brown, member of the Milford high school class of 1942, was elected president of the alumni association at its business meeting during the annual alumni banquet in the school gym Saturday night, May 26. Other officers elected were Darrel Orn. class of 1942, vice president ; • Miss Carol Weisser, class of 1951, secretary; and Mrs. Dale (Glenn is Ora) Stump, class of 1944, treasurer. Serve 328 The alumni banquet was one of the largest,. according to president Charles (“Chuck”) Myers. He said caterer Jack Wells reported serving 328. Many others who did not attend the dinner were present for the program. Lu Tiny Lambert, member of the class of 1936 and now a prospering real estate broker in Phoenix, Ariz., "acted as master of ceremonies. He was introduced by Randall Dewart, a member of his class. Lambert’s part in the program was “keeping the show rolling,” aS he described his duties. He recalled many humorous incidents when he lived in Milford as) a youth and attended —the Milford school. Sally Berkeypile and Earleen Fisher each gave a skit, followed by tribute to music, instructor Joseph Judkins, who has just completed his 25th year on the Milford faculty. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Judkins, of Hanover, Ind., were present as special guests. The tribute consisted of the showing of slides of Mr. Judkins from his earliest youth until the present. Donn Kesler showed the pictures by means of a beloptigan machine, with Harold Young narrating the script Mr. Judkins responded with some remarks of appreciation and ended singing several songs in “Mitch Miller” style. A quartet consisting of Ken Beer, Dick Sharp, Jan Widup, and Joe Jessop sang several numbers as part of the entertainment. The minutes were read by Mrs. Harry Dale Doty and the treasurer’s report by Mrs. Frank Grove. Class roll call was read by Mrs. Doty. Lance Estep,-representing the class of 1961, welcomed the senior class into the alumni association, and Ron Baumgartner, president of the clss of 1962, responded. Harold Young asked for a moment of silent prayer for alumni members who passed away during the past year. They include Wallace Potter, Odell Thoup, Malcolm Hatfield, Noble Miller, Mary Hieber, and Mollie Chilcote, the latter a former first grade teacher. Following the alumni the NewTones, a dance combo consisting of Neal Cory, Jim Jonasch, Stan Hollar, Jerry Bray and Greg Biller, played. Mrs. Fred Weisser played organ music during the dinner. (Editor’s Note: Due to Memorial Day falling on Wednesday of last week, all copy was not in last week’s issue of The Mail-Journal. This article concerning the Milford alumni association was one of those articles.)

TWIRLE RS RECEIVE AWARDS Judy Bryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bryan of Syracuse, won a third-place medal in her age group last Saturday at a USTA summer twirling contest. Susan Kirkdorfer, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Kirkdorfer Jr., r 4, Syracuse, won a first place trophy in her age group. The contest was held at Harper Creek high school in Battle Creek, Michigan. Southwest School Board Named Kosciusko circuit court judge Seth A. Rowdabaugh and Elkhart circuit court judge Aldo J. Simpson announced on Monday the appointment of a seven-member school board for the Southwest School District of Elkhart county. The Southwest District is made up of Scott township and a porion of Jefferson township in Kosciusko county (the remainder of Jefferson township is in the Lakeland School Corporation) and Harrison, Locke, Olive and Union townships in Elkhart county. Named to the board are William S. Jessop from Harrison township; Dr. Robert Abel from Olive town-

The new board will take office on July 1 and serve until the end of this year and thereafter until they are superseded by successors in a general election. The Southeast, Northwest and Northeast Districts of Elkhart county turned down the re-organi-zation plans in the May elections. 1960 Census Released By Dept. Os Commerce Figures on the latest census for the county of Kosciusko have been released by Luther H. Hodges, Secretary of the United States Department of Commerce. According to the figures released by Secretary Hodges, the 1960 census of housing counted 18,138 housing units in this county. Os these 12,508 were in sound condition with all plumbing and 12,468 were occupied. A total of 9,210 of these units were occupied by owners and had a median value of $9,400. Three thousand 253 were occupied by renters and the median gross rent of these places was S7O. Hot and cold running water was found in 15,022 homes and 15,831 had flush toilets. A total of 15,023 units had bathtubs or showers.. Only 11,837 of these units had basements and 341 were trailer homes. ‘ The census reported that 569

A record attendance of some 1200 people filled the gym. • The speaker of the evening was i Doctor James Armstrong, senior , minister of the Broadway Methi odist church of Indianapolis. Doctor Armstrong is a former ele- . mentary school student of Syrai cuse and his father is a former pastor of the Syracuse Methodist church. Doctor Armstrong’s subt ject was “Choose Up Sides” and dealth with the decisions of life, . how we deal with them and choose sides, using the illustration of choosing up sides in sports. He pointed out that it is how we go about things not who wins or , loses, that counts. It was a challenging message for the graduates" which gave them food for thought and direction into their futures.
