SYRACUSE METHODIST CIRCLES MEET LAST WEEK Members of the three Syracuse Methodist church circles met on Thursday, May 3, for their monthly meetings. Circle I A program, entitled “Getting to Know the Bible,” was presented by Mrs. Jackson Ridings at the Circle I meeting of the Women’s Society of Christian Service held last Thursday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Paul Lantz. The meeting began shortly after 1:00 when the members and one guest, Mrs. Raymond Campbell’s mother, were served a delicious desert of cottage cheese with fruit. Devotions were led by Mrs. Maude Jackson and the topic was “The Bread of Life.” Two members were present after having spent the winter in Florida. They were Mrs. Harold Young and Mrs. Jap Jones. Circle 111 Fourteen members were present at the meeting of Circle IH of the WSCS last Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ralph Thornburg, Jr. The .meeting was conducted by president Mrs. Cliff Kinder and the devotions were led by Mrs. Eugene Yoder. The next meeting will be held in the home of Mrs. William Myers of Dewart lake. Circle IV Twenty-three members and guests were present at the potluck supper meeting of the WSCS, Circle IV, held at’ the home of Mrs. Richard Heyde last Thursday evening. Mrs. Otto Stoelting led in devotions and Mrs. Evert Dunn presented the missionary lesson. The June meeting will be held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Otto Stoelting. Engagement Announced At Open House Invitations were recently issued for an open house on May 6 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Albert Weaver, Jr., of 7950 Sycamore Road, Williams Creek Park, Indianapolis. Open house was held to announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda Louise Weaver and Wade Alexander Roth. The wedding will take place on November 24 at the Meridian street Methodist church, Indianapolis. Mr. Roth is the son of Bice Alexander Roth of Edinburg. The Weaver family is known in this community and are summer residents at Pickwick Park, Syracuse.
DOUBLE STORK SHOWER HELD AT CHRISTIAN CHURCH A double stork shower honoring Carla Jean Curtis, three-week-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant Curtis of Milford, and Mrs. John Strouse of r 3 Syracuse was given by the Ladies Aid of the Milford Christian church in the fellowship room of the church on Monday evening. Several games were played with prizes going to Mrs. Curtis, Mrs. Jerry Whetten and Mrs. Carl Shearer. The two ladies found their gifts in decorated baby beds. Pink and blue crepe paper hung from the ceiling and decorated the table. A stork was found in the very center of the table. At the close of the evening Mrs. Shearer led the ,adies in prayer and refreshments of blueberry cheese cake, nuts, mints and coffee were served. On the committee for the evening were Mrs. Roger Graff, Mrs. Durward Seely, Mrs. Frank Grove, Mrs. David Hartter, Mrs. Richard Cannon, Mrs. Jerry Whetten, Mrs. John Yeater and Mrs. Merle Campbell, Jr. Vegetable Arrangements Judged At Syracuse* Wawasee Garden Club
Various vegetable arrangements were submitted for judging at the May 1 meeting of the Syracuse Wawasee Garden club which met in the home of Mrs. Arthur C. Schrader of r 4, Syracuse. These arrangements were made entirely of vegetable and were judged according to attractiveness, originality, freshness, and the standards set by the organization. Ribbons were awarded to Mrs. Herschel Leatherman, first place; Mrs. Nelson Miles, second; and Mrs. Ernest Bushong, third. President Mrs. Carl R. Reynolds conducted the business meeting. Miss Irene Abts, vice president, led in the reading and discussion of the new constitution which was then adopted by vote. Also discussed were various kinds of summer planting. The next meeting will be held in the home of Mrs. Ernest E. Bushong of Syracuse. Members are asked to bring miniature flower arrangements. ROUND TABLE LADIES HOLD DINNER PARTY Ladies of the Round Table of Syracuse closed their season Monday evening with a dinner party at the M & M Restaurant at North Webster with 21 members present. Guests were seated at one long table beautifully decorated with spring flowers, birds and clever bird houses. Favors were miniature china birds and nut cups of miniature bird houses. Table grace was given by Mrs. Carl H. Satre by singing the club collect accompanied by Mrs. Richard Ditmer on the autoharp. Following the dinner, Mrs. Merton Meredith presented a gift on behalf of the club to retiring president Mrs. Eloise Method. Mrs. Method in turn presented gifts to her officers, Mesdames Philip Fawley, K. E. Robinson and Sylvester Amsler. She also presented gifts to four club members, Mrs. Clayton Mock, Mrs. M. E. Rapp, Mrs. Noble Blocker and Miss Ethel Bowser for perfect attendance this year. The retiring president then presented the gavel to Mrs. Fawley, the new president. . Program Two high school students, Mike Storms, a junior, and Tom Martin, a senior, presented the program for the evening which was very entertaining and displayed much talent. Both youths had taken part in a recent speech festival. Mike gave a humorous reading entitled, “A Modern Sermon” and Tom presented a humorous monologue “Brotherly Love.” The hostess committee for the evening was composed of Mrs. A. L. Miller, chairman, Mrs. Mock, Mrs. Fawley, Mrs. Meredith, Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Vernon Beckman.
Robert Yoder To Take Part In Summer Spanish Institute At Kalamazoo Mr. Robert Yoder of r 3, Syracuse! is one of 60 secondary school teachers selected to take part in the seven-week Summer Spanish Institute ’ at Kalamazoo college Kalamazoo-, Mich, under the auspices of the National Defense Education Act of 1958. The program will run from June 27 to August 14. The Summer Language Institute at Kalamazoo college is one of 80 such Institutes to be conducted at various colleges and universities for the improvement of language teaching. The programs are supported by funds from the U. S. Office of Education in contract with host institutions. Participants from public schools receive a stipend of $75 a week plus allowances for dependents. There are no tuition charges. CAMP FIRE GIRLS CEREMONIAL TODAY The Syracuse camp fire girls association will hold their annual council fire Thursday evening, May .10, at the scout cabin.
