CHILD LEARNS TO COPE WITH THE PRESENT (Editor’s Note - along with the renewal of her subscription for The Mail-Journal, Mrs. Nansen Kline (Mary Postma) of 2819 Sherman street, Fort Wayne, enclosed the following article about one of her second grade boys.) “It seems to me I don’t have time to breathe any more, trying to teach children to cope with the present is a full time job. But we teachers have to do more than that. We have to try and equip children for as much of the future as we possibly can anticipate. I think my philosophy must have gotten across to at least one of my second grade boys. During the wind and rain storm a week ago, his mother had the two younger children on the davenport In telling about their experiences, this youngsters said there wasn’t room for him on the davenport, so he sat on the floor. He said he asked, 'Mother, could we turn on the TV while we are enjoying the tornado?’ He said ‘Of course we weren’t exactly enjoying the tornado, I just said that’ Also, a neighbor told me he said ‘Could we have it quiet, Pm trying to pray,’ as his mother bustled around trying to get things ready to brave the storm. I hope all the children learn in times of stress, to pray. We said a prayer for John Glenn while he was orbiting the earth.’ Mr. and Mrs. Bill Perry spent the week end at Indiana Harbor, Gary. 1 Editor's Mail Bag i SET RECORD STRAIGHT (EDITOR’S NOTE: The MailJournal is in receipt of the following letter from J. Barton Cox, Syracuse town clerk-treasurer, in the matter of a recent news story concerning the April 17th town board meeting at Syracuse. We welcome thC opportunity to correct any misstatement on our part.) To The Editor: In the new report in a recent Mail-Journal issue, concerning the Syracuse town board meeting on April 17, it was mentioned that the Board and town clerk discussed the matter of paying off a $17,000 debt of the town at the bank with a single tax levy of about 68 cents in the budget to be made this year, payable next year. It has since been brought to my attention that in addition to this $17,000 the town also owes another $17,000 (approximately) to the company which supplied the town fire truck and equipment to the town last year. This total of $34,000 debt could not be paid off in one lump sum — and in the April 17 meeting apparently all of us failed to get the true total in the picture. The board ordered in 1961 that a bond issue be made to cover this debt and it would appear that this will be necessary. The $17,000 borrowed at the bank went to make a partial payment on the fire truck, plus payent for present town hall property. Sincerely, J. B. COX

PASTOR’S COLUMN VINCENT J. ADRAGNA Pastor Milford Nazarene Church We had only two more months to go and we would be out of the U. S. Army. I looked 1 at the different soldiers. Some were sitting on the end .of their army cots writing a few chatting, about being i* the good and wonderful United States of. America again. This was a volunteer outfit, and we had been together in the mountains of Italy, Trieste’s city of rioting, and the rest center at Venice. > I thought how wonderful it would be to receive an honorable discharge from the government. We had served Uncle Sam and now he was going to reward us with an honorable discharge, mustering pay, and a free ticket home. I heard a murmur at the other end of the room toward the bulletin board. Then it turned into a groan. Soldiers started crowding around the bulletin board and I strode toward them wondering what the message was from our commanding officer. Some walked away now and I could get close enough to read the message. It read: “At 0700 hours, the folldwing men will be ready to go under fire.’’ I looked at the names and noticed at once my name -on the list. Quietness settled down in the barracks that afternoon. Many wondered as I did. Why were they doing this? Didn’t they know that we had only two months to go in this man’s army? Early the next morning there was as each man assigned lo the task force was making sure that he was prepared. > _ As we stood on that Texas hill, we watched the huge half-tracks pulling up with twin 50-caliber machine guns mounted on them, and watched the big Sherman tanks wheel into position. I realized that we were going to have everything over our heads and maybe down on them if someone slipped. I saw the mighty 75-re-coilless rifle that could literally tear a mountain apart. I noticed as did all of us the light 30-cali-ber machine gun, the BAR, and a few other light weapons that packed a big wallop in action. ' Again the question came to my mind, as it did probably to some of the others, “Why all of this?’’ I noticed some of the men gazing across at a particular hill, and as I followed their gaze, I spotted a group of men with field glasses looking our way. We were given an answer to our “why’s.” The coats of these men told us immediately that they were West Point cadets, future officers. They were being trained at our expense, and Uncle Sam was trusting us to carry out his command and believed in us enough that we would do the task set before us. The order came to move out. Terrific fire power was displayed that day. My ears hurt as tons of steel whined past our heads. The carbine jammed and. the parachute flare failed to go off aS planned to change direction of fire, and we realized that we were in real trouble. I fell on my face and ate dirt willingly as shrapnel flew past us. The mountain in front of us was being torn apart. I looked to my' left and saw through the dust and smoke our leader sitting right up in the field fixing the carbine. He fired again and this time it worked and the men back on the hills saw it, for the roar stopped and my ears quit hurting. It was all over.
