Syracuse High School Track Team Figures In Two Track Meets Last Week
Syracuse high school track team finished second Thursday in a triangular track meet at Syracuse and first in a dual track meet at North Manchester Monday. - • ® Avilla downed the Jackets 68 to 54% with Ligonier finishing third with 18%. Both Syracuse and Avilla had five firsts another tie in the regular events with Avilla winning on depth ’ and the relays. Steve Williams gave Syracuse -wins in the high hurdles and a tie in the loXvs. The Jackets handed Manchester a 67 2-3 to 41% thrumping by 'winning seven firsts to Manchester’s six. Steve Williams won both the hurdle races and the 200 yard dash. The next meets for Syracuse will be against Larwill at Larwill today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. and the Goshen Relays Saturday, April 21, at Goshen. Pierceton Trackmen Walk Away With Three-Way Track Meet Tuesday
Pierceton’s- trackmen walked away with a three-way track meet at the Pierceton track Tuesday night with 66 2-5 points, while Churubusco got *37 1-5 points, and Milford got 33 2-5 points. Gerber of Milford won three events, while B. Geiger of Churubusco got three events, and S. Kerr of Pierceton got two events. The track was “fast,” the weather cool and the crowd considered good. Tuesday Afternoon Bowling League Holds Banquet The Tomi Socks team received trophies and top team awards during the Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Bowling banquet held April 17 at the Pickwick. Members of this team were : Jeanne Van Sickle, Susan Kern, Janet Morganthaler, Wava Finton and Martha Hagerdon. Forty-eight members and guests attended the noon banquet. Tables were arranged in a large U shape and gaily decorated with artificial spring flowers and real plants which were later given as door prizes. The main table was also decorated with a rose topiary tree and decorated candles, all in the pink and white theme. Individual bowling pins with names and closing averages and dainty spring hat nut cups served as in-, dividual favors and place cards. Officers Elected Mrs. Eugene Hattersley presided for the business meeting which followed the meal. This year s officers were re-elected for another year. Harry L. Vandermark Harry L. Vandermark, 84, r 4 Warsaw, father of Condict Vandermark of Leesburg, died of complications Saturday at 1:30 p. m. in the Prairie View nursing home. He had been a patient there for the past three weeks. Mr. Vandermark was a lifetime resident of this county. He was born near Palestine on November 13, 1877, the son of Samuel and Alice Vandermark. He was married to Laura O. Moon on September 5, 1900. She preceded him in death in 1951. Survivors are another son, Everett Vandermark of r 4 Warsaw, six grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. A daughter preceded him in death. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. in the Atwood EUB church with Rev. Raymond Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Palestine cemetery. Mrs. David Holtzinger Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the -Culp funeral home in Goshen for Mrs. David Holtzinger, 81, of Goshen, sister of Mrs. Mary Green of Syracuse. Mrs. Holtzinger died Thursday noon at her home. Death followed an illness of two years. Mrs. Holtzinger, a member for many years of the Solomon’s Creek EUB church, was born June 22, 1880, in Solomon’s Creek community. She married David Holtzinger on March 20, 1902 and he preceded her in death February 14, 1961. They moved from Benton to Goshen 17 years ago. Survivors include the Syracuse sister; one daughter, Mrs. Warren Wenger, Goshen, two grandchildren and four great-grandchil-dren. The Rev. John Schroeder of Solomon’s Creek church and the Rev. Spencer Gentle of the First Brethren church' Goshen, officiated and burial was in Solomon’s Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Charles Gates Mrs. Charles Gates, 73, of Wawaka, sister of Mrs. Knox Stetler of Syracuse, died Sunday of a heart attack while enroute by ambulance to the Lagrange county hospital. She had been suffering from a heart aiTibent for about one year. Mrs. Gates was born May 22, 1882,. in Wawaka and spent her entire life in the community. She married Charles Gates in June of 1906. Surviving in addition to the husband and Syracuse sister are, two sons, Ellis of tVawaka and Donald, Kalamazoo, Michigan; two daughters, Miss Doris Gates of Wawaka and Mrs. Louis Randolph, Wawaka; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two other sisters, Mrs. Marvin Stump and Mrs. Vai Miller, both of Goshen. Services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Ulrey-Sedgwick funeral home in Ligonier. The Rev. Fred Hill officiated and burial was in the Oak Park cemetery. Mrs. Ethel Sorrenson Mrs. Ethel Bartholomew Sorrenson, formerly of Leesburg and well known in, Milford, died at 11 p. m. Saturday at Denver, Colorado, after being in the hospital only three hours. She died of a heart ailment. Mrs. Sorrenson was a sister to Mrs. James Gallagher of Leesburg. Interment was at Denver. The deceased was a second cousin to Mrs. William A. Perry of Milford.
