Minding One's Own Business r
Much has been written on the subject of “Minding One’s Own Business,” but as a rule these preachments have been directed toward local communities, business men and individuals. Recent developments in Europe as well as in the Americas impresses one with the thought that nations should be included among the offenders. The United States has landed Marines in Nicaragua because the local governor is having trouble with revolutionists. The United States and League of Nations are asked to “butt in” on Mexico affairs. Mexico promptly tells the League to mind its own business and settle its own affairs. The policy of minding your own business has been largely responsible for the 140 years of peace this country has en-
Big Lie A great many people believe — as public opinion polls prove — that the owners of industry get the lion’s share of earnings, and that the workers get the short end of the stick. They’ve been told that, time and time again, by enemies of our free enterprise system. This is comparable to the “big lie” that was so effectively used by Adolph Hitler. Allen W. Rucker, a national authority on industrial costs tells a different story. It goes like this: In a recent year, for every production man-hour worked in this country the
Take Time
By Major Margaret Corliss In the rush of everyday life, the one thing we never seem to have is time. Everyone appears to be in a hurry, and yet how often we feel that we have accomplished little during a busy day. On the other hand, we often hear repeated the theory that the busy man is the man who can always take time to do the extra job. And’is this not so? Think of the man or woman in the church who finds time to visit the sick friend. Think of the mother who, in spite of many household duties, will take on the extra work in the P.T.A. It is true that it is the busy person who will find time or make the time to carry another responsibility or to help a friend in a time of need. What power and pleasure we could all have if we would only “take time.” Take time to think; it is the source of power. The majority of man’s creative works have developed over a period of time, as if by a slow process of trial and error. Education is a preparation for creative thinking. There are some things God cannot do in the world until men love; there are some things He cannot do until men think. A modem writer, Lilian Cox, has said that for the mass of people in these days, news has taken the place of thought. Take time to think; it is the source of power.

headless. Richard P r e s i dential standard bearer last time, has checked himself out of the 1964 race to run for Governor of California. He has just renounced a gain the John Birch Society and called upon Republicans to do likewise. unless Robert Welch resigns as its head,
which he has no intention of doing. Republicans are worried over Nelson Rockefeller’s divorce proceedings, despite the fact the Gallup poll shows it will affect not more than one out of seven supporters. Word is spread throughout the west that Barry Goldwater, rightist, can not be elected President and has reached his zenith. Former President Eisenhower is reported by close friends as being strongly impressed with George Romney, Mormon churchman, who is running for Governor of Michigan and is mentioned as the Wendell Willkie of 1964 GOP presidential promise. Back of the scenes, Republican leaders are asking whether the
joyed and when we departed from that principle we were railroaded into a war. Uncle Sam’s experience has proved that meddling makes enemies. We should let our South American neighbors, as well as European brothers, adjust their own troubles in their own ways and continue to attend strictly to our own business. Sound a little out-of-date ? It is — as far as years go, for this editorial appeared in the Record 35 years ago. But we’ll have to admit to being behind the time for the sentiment expressed in exactly our own today. Others, too, are beginning to wonder if the millions we are pouring into Africa, Asia and other places are not getting us enemies instead of friends.
produced value was $5.87. Outside costs, such as depreciation and taxes, came to $1.92. So there was $3.95 per hour of work left to divide. Os that $3.95, wages and related benefits accounted for $2.27. Salaries and related benefits accounted for $1.15. So the earnings for owners, which was the profit, came to 53 cents. Putting it another way the tool users got 86.6 per cent of the divisible income — which the tool owners and providers got 13.4 per cent. Does that look like exploitation of labor?
Take time to read; it is the fountain of wisdom. The world is open to the man or woman who will take time to read. One can enjoy travel or the adventure of other men’s lives through reading. One can find comfort and guidance for difficult times through reading. One can receive knowledge and so expand his horizons through reading. Take time to read not only for information but to gain knowledge which will give a fuller life. Take time to play; it is the secret of perpetual youth. A story is told of St. Francis de Sales, who, while playing a game with a child, was asked what he would do if his Lord appeared while he was playing a foolish game. He replied, “I would finish the game; it was for His glory that I began it.” Perhaps we would do well at times to ask ourselves about the games we play. Could they be played in His presence? Take time to work; it is the price of success. There are two kinds of work. One is the labor that is done only to meet the requirements of earning a living, and the other is the work that is done with a desire to earn a living and also to accomplish something worth-while in life. Needless to say, the latter brings with it the most satisfaction to life. Take time to think, to read, to play, to work. Your life will be enriched immeasurably.
“give ’em hell” tactics of National Republican Chairman William Miller, New York, and Rep. Bob Wilson, California, head of the congressional campaign committee, is effective answer to the Kennedy New Frontier. One Republican leader said: “I fear we are pretty negative and not advancing a constructive antidote to JFK.” Republicans are worried at the popularity of Kennedy that soared even after the Cuban fiasco. How to defeat a popular president is a monumental task, history of second terms shows. The brave assertion of Indiana Congressman Charles A. Halleck that the Republicans would win the House of Congress in November, shows faint promise, many believe. An interparty was between rigid right wingers and progressive Republicans is going on in the efforts to re-elect U. S. Senator Homer E. Capehart, a moderate liberal. DEMOCRAT MISGIVINGS WORRY LOCAL POLITICOS Democrats have been accused by bellicose Republicans of having ' won the election in big cities like • Chicago for Kennedy and in popu--1 lous Lake county for Governor Welsh by vote fraud. ROLE OF TWINS IS NOT SO ROSY
Dear Amy: I We are identical twins. Our par- i ents insist that we dress alike from head to toe until we get out of high school. We want to be distinct from each other so that our friends can recognize us as the individuals we are. What can we do to get our parents to let us be different from each other? The Twins Dear Twins: Gentle persuasion is always the best way to wiw a point. If your folks simply wonTTisten to reason, go out and buy different clothes even if it takes all your baby-sitting money. It’s ridiculous to make two grown-up girls keep up the role of darling twin babies. •, • • Dear Amy: We live on such a strict budget, that at times I find it very depressing. This is my husband’s idea of saving for the future. My husband is earning a fair salary. It’s not that I don’t believe in saving, but I feel we should live a little too. How do you feel about this? No Spender Dear No: I agree with you. We all must “live a little.” Everything is good in moderation. Don’t deny yourself a necessity today in order to buy a luxury tomorrow. * * '* Dear Amy: I belong to a family club which has been in existence for about twelve years. We meet once a month. As part of the evening’s entertainment, we have a drawing for a door prize. One particular member of the family has appointed himself to supervise the drawing from start to finish and invariably either his wife, daughter or he wins (seven out of ten times last year). I honestly can’t say he cheats, but according to the number of members we have, the odds are overwhelming against the three Os them winning so often. It isn’t the door prize that bothers me so much but the principle of the thing. He can’t have the luck of the Irish because he isn’t Irish. So what do you think? A Loser I think the odds are really against you and the rest of the family while this committee of one is in operation. What he needs
nation of Alex M. Campbell, Democratic National Chairman. Campbell was M. C. of a "surprise" party that kicked in over $50,000 for Mayor Chacharis of Gary. Campbell is now the attorney for Chacharis, County Sheriff Peter Mandich and City Engineer Harold Zweig, under federal indictment. Montgomery in a telegram to the Governor charged Campbell is "attempting to wrap the mantle of Democratic Party respectability around persons indicted for federal income tax conspiracy." The chairman of St. Joseph county that turned in 19,159 votes for Welsh said: “We want to win this election and it won't be easy with Alex Campbell hanging around our necks.” In treading water in the upheavel Welsh said it was a lawyer client relation between Campbell and the Lake county defendants. Powerful groups are embittered against President Kennedy. The American Bar Association chastised him for naming 89 Democrats to lifetime federal judgeships, out of 92 appointed. They claim he reneged on a bipartisan promise. Manifestly the President’s farm program is very unpopular. He is failing to get support of his own party members in Congress on

is a few assistants to guarantee the entire family an even chance. Volunteer. • • • Dear Amy: I am 36, married and I have two wondefiful boys. Everything should be great but it isn’t and it’s my fault. I’m bored with my wife. Call it indifference or whatever you want. I just don’t care anymore. I have thought of leaving or asking for a divorce but I’m crazy about my boys. Each day that goes by I’m putting her through more pain than any woman should have to take from a man, and yet, I can’t help the way I feel. Could you possibly offer me any help? J. R. Dear J. R.: I feel there is something you have neglected to tell me in your letter about yourself or your wife. What did you expect to get out of marriage? Being married and raising a family doesn’t offer excitement every day of the week, but for a mature adult it holds many pleasures and personal satisfactions. Your sense of responsibility for your children indicates that you are not ready to throw in the towel. Before you do something you might be sorry for later, talk it over with your clergyman or a marriage counselor. Dear Amy: I am married to a splendid man, or I would be happily married if it were not for my jealousy of his first wife. I’m obsessed by the feeling that perhaps he does not love me as much as he loved her. He talks about her seldom, but when he does I get so green-eyed that I am fairly crazy and sometimes refuse to talk to him for daysDo you think I’m foolish in being jealous over his dead wife? It’s the LIVE ones you have to worry about! • • * Please address all letters to: AMY ADAMS c/o THIS NEWSPAPER For a personal reply enclose an i addressed stamped envelope.
