Bowling Prattle It’s amazing how ten-pin bowling popularity has become in recent years, not only as a great indoor sport, but as an ideal exercise for both men and women, as well as for the youngsters. Amazing to, the great number of “oldies” that take part in active league bowling — we find in our own comunity, several men in . their 60’s and 70’s doing a real good job in league bowling. Proof of that is revealed by our good friend Bert Carwin who is 76 years old and believed to be the oldest active league bowler, in our county and maybe in surrounding counties, who gives the “ole * 600 series” a run for its money even now and then. Only last week he had a 598 series in the Wednesday night league. ' He says he is not as old v as Douglas Pilcher but he hopes to keep at it till he can develope the poise and graceful delivery that Doug has mastered. Bert says — to keep young and active, as well as maintaining a girlish figure, take up bowling at least a couple times a week, it’s good for both body and mind from head to foot. He ought ,to know since he has been bowling since 1906. More power to his — we hope he is bowling when 100 years old. —By committee of aged bowlers COLISEUM TO HOST TWO BIG-TIME BASKETBALL EVENTS Friday evening, March 2, the Detroit Pistons will play the-Cin-cinnati Royals in a regular scheduled major league basketball game. Sewer Assessments Going Out For First Payment Today In Syracuse
Syracuse property owners in the ] first ward received statements \ March Ist from the sewage de- i partment of the town of Syracuse, the first to be mailed out under j the new ordinance of the Syracuse ; town board which put in motion j the completion of the sewage i lines and the building of a sani- : tary disposal plant. Residents in the second ward 1 will receive their statements March 10, and those in the third ward will receive statements March 20. All residents who receive statements have 10 days in which to pay, says clerk-treasuret J. B. Cox, after which a 10 per cent penalty must be added. Only those property owners who are now using the sanitary sewer lines will be billed, but as service is made available others will be added, says the town clerk-treas-urer. Other points in the ordinance include: The property itself is liable for the sewer assessment, but renters will be billed when the clerktreasurer is notified to do so. The failure of the renter to pay, however, does not relieve the property owner of the responsibility. Failure to receive a statement does not relieve a property of responsibility, either. The sewer assessment is “just like taxes,” according to Mr. Cox, and it will follow the property until it is paid. Storm Sewers Those properties on the storm sewers now must change over to the new sanitary sewer lines at their own expense when the sanitary sewer lines pass their property. They will be billed as of Feb. 1, though just as are property owners on the present sewer lines. Property owners in the first ward will be billed for one full month, as payment started Feb. 1. Those in the second ward will be billed this first time for one month ■' and 10 days, and those in the ■ third ward will be billed for one month and 20 days. The following s months each property will be i billed for one month. Owners may ’ pay in advance, if they wish, but ■ there is no discount allowed for such payment. A card statement similar to ! those used by the Northern Indi- • ana Public Service Co. is to be used. Owners may by tearing off > the proper portion of the card ■ either mail in the card and check ■ or a free mail box is provided in • the doorway of the building at

120 South Huntington street, where the office of the town clerk is located. The town clerk-treasurer will aid in every way possible, to get any error in mailing address corrected, or in correcting errors in billing any properties. However, the town ordinance makes it the responsibility of the property owner to see that the sewer assessment is properly paid, and the town clerk-treasurer has no authority to waive any payments. The Syracuse Sewer and Disposal Plant system was first started in the 1930’s with a S2O, 600 grant from the federal government and $30,000 paid by the town of Syracuse. To this now is added a $320,000 bond issue of 30 years duration, making the plant valued at more than half a million dollars at today’s prices. This $320,000 must be paid, with interest, and the town has entered into an agreement to do so. If the town should fail to do so, the bond holders have the right to come in, and take over the sewage plant, raise rates if necessary and operate the plant. The sewage plant is an independent corporation, and nc town taxes will go toward its operation. Also, no monies which the sewage plant takes in may be used for operation of the town or the water company, unless the whole indebtedness is paid off. The town board has the right to raise dr lower rates in some cases, but this is most unlikely, as these rates have been advertised and approved and are copied after other towns where like conditions exist. Town clerk-treasurer Cox asks that all citizens bear with the operation and where difficulties exist every effort will be made to correct them. The clerk’s office will be open to collect sanitary sewer . charges five days each week, Mont day through Friday, from 1 to 5 i P m - . . ■ BEDFORD, VA., BULLETIN- : DEMOCRAT: “Os the many fine ' words whose meaning has been ; perverted by the political stresses • of our times surely one of the most abused is ‘temporary’ —especially • in the field of public finance.
