“ It seems that, on the upper part of Green Island, an illicit whiskey still existed until yesterday, when Marshal Kipp, Collector Woodward and Inspector Fales made a raid on the premises and locked up both the owner and the door. A month ago tho distillery was in full blast. It was a “still” night, and the man running the machine, who had made eighteen gallons of whiskey, put it out in the open air to cool. Along came a cow. She was thirsty, and the Loowage looked inviting. She swallow cd every drop—eighteen gallons of un rectified whiskey, warranted to kill at forty rods. That cow luis been drunk ever since. The Tribune is “vexing its righteous soul ” at tho symptoms of vigor and vitality—the hopeful tone and clastie confidence—manifested by the Democratic party. Like a scared child who pulls the counterpane over his face, that journal tries to hide from itself the approaching downfall of its faction by the following statement of obstacles to the success

of the Democratic party :

“ The Democratic party, if now reorganized with a view to future triumphs, is doomed to confront these sinister pop-

“ 1. That it did not stand loyally by the country in the great trial to which we were subjected by the slaveholders' rebellion ; whereas intense patriotism, otherwise- Unionism, has hitherto been one of its proudly cherished charactcr-

Tho recent reverses of the Imperialists in Mexico, and Iho recent concentration of our troops on tho line of the Bio Grande, - , seems to have induced the Emperor of France to take a more decided stand than ever before in support of the Emperor Max'fiiilian. ter he discarded,” except perchance by those recreant Democrats who are aux ious to get buck into the party, in some way that will cover their inconsistency^ It is very certain that the party will not accommodate them. The Tribune rca sons as if the next presidential election would, like the last, take place in the very crisis of a tremendous military con - test. In 1804, the war feeling overhoro all others. A large portion of the vo ting population of every State was in the army, from which Democratic documents, and oven ballots were to a great extent excluded. Thirteen States had no participation in the election whatever. Even if the Tribune’s array of reasons were all true, there arc fifteen States where they would not greatly damage the .Democratic party. These same reasons were urged lust full, when the excited temper of the public mind favored their effect ; and even then, Mr. Lincoln hud a narrow escape. To thoughtless persons this may sound parad. xical, when they recollect that out of 232 electoral votes, General McClellan received only twenty one. But despite the apparent paradox, it is nevertheless true, as every person son must admit who will attend to the figures. If out of the 4,034,789 citizens who voted in the presidential election, the small number of 32,. r )13 had changed sides, General McClellan would have been elected, as wc proceed to demon-

strate.

The whole narober of electoral votes counted was 233, of which 117 were a majority. Had McClellan received 90 electoral votes in addition to his 21, he would have had a majority. These 90 might have been given him by the States set down in the following table, by a very small change in their popular vote;
