[Communicated.] The Graduating Exercises of the Law I Class of the I. A. University took place nt the College Chapel, on Tuesday evening, 22d inst. The large and attentive audience that was present to hear the '•spread-eagle” oratory of the young limbs ' of Jurisprudence seemed highly delighted with the opportunity of attendingsnch a literary festival, and especially pleased with the gracious privilege of-carrying home the scraps. Each speaker, in the vain attempt to tell all'he knew about his theme, spun out his discourse to a degree of tenuity that reminded one of Milton's “Linked sweetness long drawn out,'’ and forcibly impressed bis weary listeners with the practicability of expunging from bis manuscript a number of those adjec-

tives of

“ Learned length and thundering sound.” One consolation, however, remained to the orators: that if they did nothing more they taught the audience, after the regime » recommended by Dean Swift, to exercise patience. Judging from the defensive tone of their rainbow-tinted oratory and artificial declamation, if we were unacquainted with the general character of Lawyers, we might think with them that there was some foundation for the assertion that they were “in league with the prince of the power of the air.” As it was the 22d, it was natural to presume that the “ Father of his Country" Would receive his due meed of praise.— Could the spirit of Mount Vernon have kcard the blazing panegyrics paid to his memory, he would have raised the query, w hat evil have I done, that, forsooth, a lawyer doth harp my praise? The speeches were well written, and Would have done honor to older heads. We predict for them an abundant harvest I# the far-off reaping. The attendants were highly pleased with the literary efforts, and were pretty much of the opinion that there is such a thing in existence as “Natural and Revealed Law ;” fully convinced that “ Law b the Pride of the Human Intellect;” •omewhat dubious whether “ Members of the Legal 1 rofession should engage in Politics well satisfied that a “Defense of the Loga) Profassfon ” was no longer necessary, and that “ The Majesty of the Law " should be eternally revered. Prof. Matson delivered a short but vpry appropriate valedictory to his class, and admonished them to avoid the Charyhdis In which so many entering the legal profession, with flattering hopes of future success, had been irretrievably lost.— Prof. Nutt officiated with his usual dignity as master of ceremonies, and at the close of the exercises conferred the degree of ILL. upon the several members of the class.
