A widow bold wm Botey Brown, That chanced Tom Toung to know, nr; She wus In flesh * little g-n-sa,
And he a Uulc grocer.
Now Bot»y rather fancied Tom, And Tom was wont to utter,
While Milling “firkins” niid‘‘froli lump,"
He’d have no other but her.
So they were wed—one evening 'twas,
Her mourning laid aside,
She at the altar, altered stood— A flaunting, dashing bride.
And Tom spoke out the marriage vow,
That all his freedom fettered,
And thought that now he d won his I let,
His lot in life he’d bettered.

Tho while, Tom bottling up liis wratli, Though he such waste could bear ill. It chanced, however, one stormy night,
The rain whs fiercely pouring,
While Tom sat poring o'er the news,
HU spouse in arm-chair snoring.
The door-bell rang—the night so foul
No wonder made one pull it
With savage force. Torn started up
As though struck by u bullet. The door ajar, an ugly mug Appeared before his sight;
Thought Tom—“You 're in a dripping state
Todrop in, such a night.”
Outspoke the stranger—“That you're wed
To Betsy Brown, they dare hint;
No heir, I hope, yet? N<>1 Then here's
To make myself apparent.’’
Then strode he in where Betsy sat,
Despite all Tom's restraint;
Shcgavoonc look, then shrieked and swooned-
’T was real and no faint.
To rub her then each took a hand,
And there was great ado—
One brought some water, one brought salts—
At last they brought her to.
“O, John, my first, can this lie you?" Maid she, “that broke my napping—
It cannot be your spirit, for You entered without rapping.
“ We heard you'd met an awful fate
On California's shore—
A stage upset—you broke your skull—
And so we gave you o'er.”
Said John : “No such stage tragedy
E’er happened to me yet;
A placer full of ore was all
The orful fate I met.
“ And now, returned, I claim my wife
So, Young, you gay deceiver,"
As I put In a prior right,
I think you 11 have to leave her.''
So it turned out; Tom Young “turned in '
That night a single fellow; While over a hot jug of punch The new joined pair got mellow.
Brown with his gold now makes a show,
As Californians must,
And Bet holds high her head, but then
He keeps her in tho “ dust.”
As for poor Tom, though once he thought
Him happy in Bofs arms.

The reason why people arc sodi-tressod when siek, and why so many die, is because they do not get a medicine which will pass to tho afflicted parts, and which will open tho natural passages for the disease to be cast out; hence a large quantity of food and other matter is lodged, and the stomach and in testincs lire literally overflowi ing with tho corrupted mass; tints undergoing | disagreeable fermentation, constantly mixing with the blood, which throws the corrupted matter through every vein and artery, until life is taken from the body by disease. BOERHAVE’S HOLLAND BITTLBS.
Nettlement of a Cn«r. At Cleveland, a few days ago, Joseph Davis commenced a prosecution in tho' police court in Cleveland against John X\ end all. On the trial, William Davis was the principal witness for the prosecution, and made the case strong against the defendant. Mr. (’ , the attorney of the defendant, took him in hand for cross-examination as follows : Mr. ii.—“Are you in any manner related to the prosecuting witness? Witness.—“Yes.” Mr. C.—“How” Witness.—“We are brothers-in-law.” Mr. C.—“You can go down, sir.” Mr. C then called up and examined about a dozcu witnesses, who swore that William Davis and the prosecuting witness were father and son. This was clinching testimony; but Mr. C was calling another witness yet, when the judge said: “Mr. 0 , there is no use in calling nny more witnesses to that point. It is suflicieutly proved.” Mr. C replied: “ If your honor is satisfled, I am ; I only wish to show that the witness is a liar and not to he believed.” And he tilted himself hack in his chair, ran is lingers through his hair, and looked around upon the crowd, while a triumphant grin covered his face. The city attorney then recalled William Davis. Attorney.—“A dozen witnesses swear you and the prosecuting witness are father and son. How is that?” Witness.—“It is true." Attorney.—“Why, then, did you say, a few minutes ago, that you were broth-ers-in-law ?” Witness. — “Because we married sis-
ters.’
Here all hands became convulsed with l*OgiiL«r. anti Mg C ’s triumphant gnn paased into tho “reflection of despair, and hi» oiiejUiuto the county jail.
