Al'l'KAtsEits.—The County Commissioners convened in special session on Alomlay last, and made the following appointments of Appraisers ol' the Ileal Estate of Putnam County: Elisha P. Cowitu.i., Principal —to appraise Green castle, Madison and Marion townships; S.vmi'kl CtiLLivicn, Assistant—to appraise llusscl, Franklin and Jackson townships; D.vviu UunisiLL, Assistant--toi a)ipraise Clinton, Monroe and Floyd town-

ships ;

.1A colt Ettki:, Assistant—to appraise Washington and Warren townships; and John Adams, Assistant—to appraise Clovcrdale and Jefferson townships. — The appointees are all good Democrats, well qualified to discharge the duties devolved upon them. They cont-

inence operations forthwith.

The Cash System.—It is a source of no little gratification to us to learn that the reform recently inaugurated in our] midst in favor of tho cash system, by a yrell known mercantile firm, meets with u general acquiescence on the part of their customers. But one week has elapsed since the adaption of the change, during which time their trade has been unusually brisk, and a corresponding increase may doubtless be anticipated, as the aibpyitages of the system become known. May we not hope that every merchant and business man in tbe community will follow their example ?- “Wc have felt and are still experiencing the evils of the credit system, but arc forced into it by the example of old capitalists, who encourage it in their own business and compel others to fall into the ruinous custom, or else go under. Some of our merchants who have ample means, sell on long time, charging fifteen or twenty per cent, more for their goods, and taking the well secured notes of our farmers, j and thus others are compelled to adopt tbe saUM! tub?, in self-preservation, or pth- j erwise lose the trade. V\ c look forward to the abolishment of this system, which is alike injurious to buyer and seller and hope to see inaugurated the only true and safe basis—the cash system. W < would then no longer be compelled to pay an increased per cent, for what we buy, the merchant would not be under the necessity of putting on the tariff to provide for had debts, expense of collecting - besides avoiding vexatious law suits, and the thousand other annoyances that

the credit system is heir to.

ggl_Ou Tuesday night last a young man named John Hhireliff, a son of wid ow Thomas Shindift, of this county, was found about half a mile from Loogootee,, lying upon the railroad track, dead, two trains having passed over his body, ll is supposed that he was murdered and then thrown upon the track.
