the Cheap Printing Establishment, Thorn- j
burgh s Block, west side Pul,He Square. tt&" I lio Masons, wo learn, have fitted tip their new lodge room, in the Thoruhurgli building, in elegant style. 8taf" A new temperance organization
has been instituted in this place, which'
embraces iu its charitable and protecting folds men and women, boys and girls. 86k»The impassable condition of the
roads has created an unusual scarcity of
wood, grain, and farm products generally, iu this market. The first-named article cannot be had for “ love or money.” Ifeiyl'lerk McDougal, of the steamer Uncle Sam, has our thanks for a package of New Orleans dailies, forwarded by rail from Cairo. A present most opportune, our usual favors by Express haviugfuiled. Day-.! udge Eckels returns from Washington well pleased with the result of his visit. lie has no idea of resigning his Judgeship. < >n the contrary, In' expects to return to Utah in the Spring, accom-
panied by his family.
anyThc frequent rains and consequent bad nrads of the fall and winter, have excited a universal feeling in this community in favor of good, substantial, McAdumizcd roads. Stock and donation subscription papers are being circulated by enterprising and zealous men, and our citizens respond generally by signing liberally. We hope their efforts will not abate until ample provision is made
for improved roads.
HPiL, Ity reference to their advertisement, it will he seen that Messrs. Thornburgh A Robinson have “turned over a new leaf,” and made the New Year the occasion fora wise and wholesome reform in their system of business. Having adopted the principle of one umheiuting cash price, they say (and we believe truly) that they are thus enabled to sell at prices greatly reduced; and we trust their numerous patrons and tho goods-buying public generally will testify their appreciation of, and hearty co-operation in, this important and advantageous reform by a liberal and increased patronage.— Fee advertisement, wherein they speak
for themselves.
WeSuThe present dearth of local news would sorely tax the wits of a “penny-a-liner,’' if not drive him to desperation. A glance at the miniature world around us furnishes no “food for reflection,” or other requisite pabulum for a literary feast. Politically, we are enjoying un usual peace and harmony; commercially we are fast approaching a dead-lock, in consequence of bottomless roads; and socially, the usual festivities of the holi day season arc a source of enjoyment to all, which, in view of the gloomy pall enveloping us, we duly and thank fully appreciate. As soon as “ something turns up,” wc will let our readers
know.

ClitrriT Cot UT.—The extra session of the Putnam Circuit Court adjourned on Wednesday, at 12 M. Judge Cowgill presided the first day, and, being under the impression that Judge Clay pool would not he hero, in consequence of sickness in his family, he continued most of the pauses, till the April Term. Judge Claypool came and presided on Tuesday and Wednesday. A judgment was rendered in favor of Williams against the N. A. «fc 8. 11. 11. Co. for over six thou Band dollars, for services rendered a few years since, as engineer and disbursing agent in the construction of the road. The case will be appealed. In the case Aif Col. Gentry against the Hank of Gosport and the stockholders thereof, a judgment was rendered for the plaintiff for between six and seven thousand dollars. The suit was upon certificates of deposit amounting to over twelve thousand dollars, but the evidence showed that the certificates were issued in part for Citizen’s Rank notes, Wampler's cheeks, and
