A Waterloo Defeat.

Everywhere in the North ami West, a combination of terns, office cormorants, and “rag-tag and bob-tail” factions, has triumphed—the Democracy are defeated. In Indiana almost every office is taken by the enemy. Perhaps not more than three democratic congressmen are saved from the wreck. We have no hope fur the State Ticket, nor for the Legislature. In other States North and West, the De-

mocracy have fared no better.

Reverses must come periodically ; and it is perhaps well that one has come now. Democracy was too strong in numbers; it embraced among its leaders not a few bad men. It has just gone through a LI purifying process, of which it will be all the better for years to come. We un- Li doubtedly merited some castigation.— Rad men, in many instances, were in power ; bad counsels too frequently prevailed—thus placing the Democratic par

ty in false, untenable position*.

While we believe in disposing of bad men, and correcting blunders, in polities, within the party, without calling in the i aid of the enemy—yet we cannot but subscribe to the justness of the judgment of the people at the ballot box in many' instances^ In this part of the State, however, we had no political sins to answer for, and good men have fallen, whose ; fall men of all parties will regret when the excitement of the canvass is succeed-

ed by a “sober second thought.” The lie*ii 11 In Piifnnm Comity.

Putnam has done badly, yet comparatively she has done well. Never did the opposition to Democracy make as desperate a light as during the canvass just closed—desperate iu effort—desperate in means—desperate in recklessness—and yet, in most instances, they have succeeded by the “ skin of the teeth.” A purgation of the polls of illegal votes would strip nearly all the successful republicans of their majorities. The Democrats of Putnam have learned a lesson they will not soon forget. The opposition should make the most of their pre sent success, because not again in -i long series of years will they make a respecta-

ble show iu Putnam!

the street on Thursday night last. Guns fired, crackers popped, bail whiskey suffered, noisy boys had full license, and night was made hideous. It was certainly a curious spectacle to see I’sher and Thompson exulting over the election of John G. Davis! What next?

a»a)u Open groceries and free whiskey have been quite common in Grceneastle. for some time past. V'tit/n ranee republicans have dealt in whiskey by wholesale and retail to control votes and elections: and Know Nothings have cordially embraced Irishmen and Germans, iu drunken revelry over whiskey purchased to slay the Democracy. The election is over—votes were secured—the democracy arc slauhtered,—how long now before these same Temperance republicans and Know Nothings will make midnight as

For the present, wo can only say 1 to the Democrats: Grin and hoar it— your presnt defeat only insures a more certain and more glorious victory in the future.
