Wanted—A Pastor. "We have been -without a Pastor, Some eighteen montlw er more, And though candidates are plenty— We’ve heard at least a score, All of them “ tip-top” preachers, Or so their letters ran— we are just as far as ever From setting on a man. The first who came among us By no means was the worst, But then we did n't think of him Because he was the first j It being quite the custom To sacrifice a few Before a church in earnest Determines what to do. There was a smart young fellow, With serious, earnest way, Who hut for one great blunder Had surely won the day ; Who left so good impression, On Monday one or two Went round among the people To see if he would do. The pious, goodly portion Had not a fault to find; His clear and searching preaching They thought the very kind, And ail went smooth and pleasant Until they heard the views Of some influential sinners Who rent the highest pews. On them his pungent dealing Made but a sorry hit: The cost of gospel teaching Was quite too tight a fit. Of course his fate was settled, Attend, ye Parsons all! And preach to please the sinners, If you would get a cull. Next came a spruce young dandy, W T ho wore his hair too long; Another's coat was shabby, And his voice not very strong; And one New Haven student Was worse than all of those, We could n't hear his sermon Fur thinking of his nose. Then wearying of candidates, We looked the country through, Mid doctors and professors, To find one that would do; And after much discussion, On who should boar the ark, With tolerable agreement We fixed on Dr. Parke. Here then we thought it settled, But were amazed to find Our flattering invitation Respectfully declined; We turned to Dr. Hopkins To help us in the lurch, Who strangely thought that college Had claims above -‘our church.'’ Next we despatched eimnnittees, By twos and threes, to urge The labors for a Sabbath Of a Rev. Shallow Splurge. He came—a marked sensation, So wonderful his style, Followed the creaking of his bools As he passed up the aisle. His tones were so affecting, His gestures so divine, A lady fainted in the hymn, Before the second line, And on that day h*gave us, In accents clear and loud. The greatest prayer e'er addressed To an enlightened crowd. He preached a double sermon, And gave us angel's food, On such a joyous topic, “The joy of solitude,” All full of sweet descriptions Of flowers and pearly streams, Of warbling birds, and moonlit groves, And golden sunset beams. Of faith and true repentance He nothing had to say; He rounded all the corners, And smoothed the rugged way; Managed with great adroitness, To entertain and please, And leave the sinner's conscience Completely at its ease. Six hundred is the salary Wo gave in former days, We thought it very liberal, And found it hard to raise; But when we took the paper W r c had no need to urge To raise a eool two thousand For the Rev. Shallow Splurge. In vain were all our efforts, We had no change at all, We found ten city churches Had given him a call; And he in prayerful waiting, Was keeping all in tow, But where they bid the highest 'T was whispered he would go. And now good Christian brothers. We ask your earnest prayers, That God would send a Shepherd To guide our church affairs; With this clear understanding, A man to meet our views, Must preach to please the sinners And fill the vacant pews.

Agricultural. I.line ox& Orchards.

I The value of lime for many purposes in agriculture is no longer a theoretical question, but an admitted fact. On orchards ! . its effects have been very surprising, and I such, indeed, as to surprise even the most incredulous. For many uses lime in the ; stone is preferable, if it is of a character . that admits of its being reduced to a condition sufficiently fine for its application, jfor it then contains about fifty per cent, of carbon, a principle which enters large-1 ly into vegetables. Calcination, or burn|ing, drives off the carbon and renders • caustic lime mild. In its freshly slacked state its application is, in most eases, attended with disadvantage, as its eaustici- - ty proves harmless in many ways. In re-: gard to the application of lime on orchards, 1 it may be remarked that the fall is per- j 'haps as favorable a season, on many accounts, as can be selected. Its effects

Collr In

Colic in horses is a very common disease, and if taken in time may be easily cured in most cases. It is not unfrequently confounded with inflammation of the bowels, but is easily distinguished, as follows ; Colic has no increase of the pulse, which is not over fifty a minute; the animal often rolls; the disease intermits;and there is but little fever. With inflam-1 mation of the bowels there is much fever;! the pulse is sometimes a hundred a min-1 uto, the attack is gradual and the disease does not intermit. When colic arises 1 from had food, a pint or so of a solution J of saleratus will often afford entire relief. | As it assumes more of u spasmodic char- j acter, peppermint and ginger may be added. We have used with entire and im- j mediate success a small spoonful of sale-1 ratus, the same quantity of ginger and a j teaspoonful of peppermint, added to a ) pint of nearly hot water, and given from | a junk bottle. Powdered charcoal is one j of the best and safest mediums for any disease resulting from derangement olj : the digestion, and two or three ounces or more, mixed with water, may be given at any time with great advantage. Inflammation of the bowels is general-! ,ly increased and rendered fatal by irrita 1 ting medicines. A drink of slippery elm, j 1 hourly, to allay irritation—giving the an-1 1 imul but little food, and that weak gruel, j and keeping him quiet—is good and safe | treatment.— Country Gentleman.
