Out nmnn" the sutnmnr meadows With the sunshine in her hair— Rinding into sheaves the shadows That are fulling here and there — Singing through the dusky valleys— Chasing echoes up and down— Goes the little maiden Lucy, With the locks of shadowy brown. Four sweet summer-times have risen From the green lap of the spring; Ami the beauty of their garments Has been over everything; Four times have the autumn meadows Roen with golden fruitage rife, Since the angels left her lying N cath tlie pearl) gate of life. Down and down the sunny future Dies the way that she must tread—■ Very fair it is, and pleasant, With the sunshine overhead ; May the white hands of the angels Guide her gently, where the light Reaches to the far-off glory. That is never dim with night.
Dr. Franklin Abetting an Eloprmriit. At u recent meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Society, the talented and efficient Corresponding Secretary, Horatio G. Jones, Ksq., read a letter written 1 by Dr. Joseph K. Swift, of Kaston, Pa, relating a curious incident in the life of Boston’s noble son, Benjamin Frank-

Theeelebrated painter, Benjamin West, before he become known to fame, fell in love with Miss Klizabcth Shewell. West was poor, the Shewells were rirb. Stephen Shewell, the proud brother of Elizabeth, desired her to marry another suitor, which she refused to do. West was forbidden the house, but Elizabeth continued to meet him, and they were engaged to be married. The obstinate brother kept his sister under lock and key, till West sailed for Europe to proseeute his studies. Miss iShewell, however, had promised to join him in any part of Europe, and marry I him as soon as Mr. W. informed her of 'his ability to maintain her. The patronage which West met in London, soon justified him in sending for

ttw-Tho Banner of the 28th ult. saj-s : “The State Sentinel has manufactured a nock and bull story to the effect that Defroes and Davis /ios made a contract, by which the former transfers to the latter the republican vote of the 7th district, and the latter to the former the anti-Lc-compton democratic vote of the 6th district. Rather rich to hear Lecompton papers and orators charging independent freemen with bargain and sale." —In this brief extract there is more than one mistake. The State Sentinel did not manufacture the story, but published it upon republican authority. It did not charge “independent freemen with bargain and sale”—on the contrary, it expressly exonerated them from anything of the kind. It charged, upon republican authnritj'—and we reiterated the charge—that a bargain had been made between Defrees and Davis, to the effect stated ; but that when it camc to consummating the trade, Defrees and Davis had not the voters at command to transfer so as to premote their mutual selfish ambition ; and expressly asserted that independent freemen were not to he bought and sold like slaves in the market, or like sheep in the shamble. Considering Brown’s practice, he lie*
