July 6.—Jacob Sharp

feels somewhat better today, although he ate no breakfast. This is Mr. Sharp's 70th birthday. He made no reference whatever to it, and knowing it would be a cruel mockery no one else has mentioned it. He still preserves an unbroken silence for hours at a time. Mrs. Sharp still remains by his side.

Routzhan's Removal.

W. H. Routzhan is induced to remove to Los Angeles, Cal., where, in partnership with Mr. Gilkey he will open a merchant tailoring house, partly by his own ill-health but largely on account of his father who is suffering with lung trouble and must leave this climate. "Can you dispose of your lease?" wae asked of bim. "Easily" said he. ''There, are three parties after it already."

July 6.—A morning paper

claims that the defense in the "Boodle" trial have attempted to pack the jury which is being impaneled and that several friends of the indioted county officials have slipped in. When the court met this morning the Prosecuting Attorney esked for an adjournment until 2 o'clock for the purpose of preparing for presentation to the court fasts as to the qualification of the five jurors sworn in yesterday. The adjournment was granted.

FAITHLESS FIDELITY.

What E. Harper Has to Sav. CINCINNATI, July 6.—The Times-Star prints a talk with Mr. E. L. Harper, of the Fidelity National bank, in jail. He says he bad no idea of any disaster to the bank that he bought stook the day before dosing and only two days before put $30,000 on deposit If the bank examiner had not oome there would have been no trouble. He denies that he kept his action secret and Bays that all directors were responsible. He aJso went back into the past history and 6aid that at the time of the Handy wheat deal a Cincinnati bank's vault was literally emptied. Be then put in the $200,000 and the deil was carried through successfully. Mr. Harper now says that some of the men engaged in that transaction are now foremost condemning him.

Trenholm yesterday received a statement from Bank Examiner Snider in regit rd to the affairs of the fidelity National bank on June 30, the date of its suspension. He declined to make it public to day, as be desired to have it carefully considered before doing so. It was subsequently stated that the books of the batik were kept so loosely that it is likely the examination now beiog made would show them nearly $500,000 out of the way.

There were seven oases in polide 06tfrt this morning. Oliver Sheppard, Andrew Gray, Robert Brennan, Chas. Blyghand Thomas Coleman, drunk, fined $1 and oosts each. The oases against John Snider and James Herring charged with assault and battery, were postponed until 2pm tomorrow before Justioe Wildy.

There was a regular Fourth of July polioe court this morning. The room was well filled with offenders who were brought up to have tfeeir sentences dealt out to them. It was a well mixed crowd of blacks ani whites and justice was administered as follows: N. R. Hatch, John Shea, Giles Noggle, Richard Embery. Soloman Jaokson James Knitz, Jeff Milton, Glomus Johnson, Samuel Donnelly, John Lawson and Dora Young, drunk fined $1, and costs each. Dora Young is an "innooent" looking girl from Corey. She said she was drunk but oould'ut help it, when asked whether "guilty or not guilty." Giles Noggle plead not guilty on two charges but was proven guilty and fined $l and cost on both charges, the latter being for currying oonoealed weapons.

CITY VS. MORRIS.

LiVlna Morris Sued for $700. The suit of City vs. Lavina E. Morris, of which the entry was published in yesterday's issue of the

was

brought by City Attorney H. C. Nevitt, and is based upon what is known as the Sage suit against the city. Mrs. Caroline Sage, while driving on south Centre street, was thrown from her buggy and severely injured by the carriage running over a pile of sand which was on the street and upon which there was no danger signal Mrs. Sage sued the city and recovered $350 damages, in oonsequenoe of whioh the city brings suit against Lavina Morris for $700, to nollie damages paid Mrs. Sage, for negleoting to put out a danger signal. Besides the $350 paid Mrs. Sage in actual damages recovered, the city had many other expenses of the case tofhear, whioh plaoes the amount of the suit at $700. The case will oome up at the September term of the Cirouit Court.

Mr. Andrews Corrects an Error. Mr. Andrews, the feooper who made the speech against Schilling in the Grand Army meeting Monday morning, has called at the

rect misstatements made about his speech. "I did not say," remarked he, "as quoted in the Express, that I hesitated to tell all I knew because I"didn't want to paint Schilling as black as he is/' "I said 'I will stop or I will say too much."

Mr. Andrews says that he heard Schilling speak at the international session of Coopers' Union in St. Louis in 1872 and also had conversations with him from which he knew he was a socialist. Schilling was afterward made president of the Union and under his jurisdiction the Union went to pieces. He gave it ae his opinion that Schilling would wreak everything he undertook.

DISMISSED.

The Kearney—Smith Case Dismissed From 7 Justice Slaughter's Court. The case of Miss Laura H. Kearney vs W. A. Smith, on charge of bastardy, came up in Justice Slaughter's oourt this afternoon. Both parties were in oourt and the attorneys began the argument of the case shortly after 2 o'clock.

S. C. Davis and T. W. Harper were the oounsel for the defense and after a few minutes argument it became apparent that they would win the case. A fault in the affidavit was found and the attorneys submitted the case.

Justioe Slaughter then dismissed the case on the grounds that the affidavit was not legal. The state then appealed the case to the Cirouit Court, where it will oome up for the September term.

The Canoe Club.

The Canoe Club met last night and elected officers as follows: Commodore, F. B. Miller Vice-Commodore, F. P. Cox Secretary, J. B. Peddle Treasurer, George Davis. The name of the club was changed to the Wabash Canoe Club.
