This morning the oases against Owen Monahan and Dennis Shugrue were called. Monahan is a nail feeder. Yesterday morning on a fine in police oourt he was sent to the rock pile, from whioh he made his escape not long afterward. Nate Tate is the officer in charge of the rock pile. He kept his eye open for Monahan and last night looated him in front of Tim Lahey's saloon, near Seventh and Main. He plaoed Monahan under arrest, and the latter broke through the saloon and ran out the alley way, accompanied by Shugrue, who mixed himselt up in the.affair as a friend of Monahan. Tate overtook Monahan and dragged him across to the corner of Baur's drug store, where Shugrue assaulted Tate and was in turn pounded with the officer's olub. Monahan then ran ioto Baur's drug store, followed by the officer, and there, surrounded on all sides by show cases and valuable goods, the officer and the prisoner went at it again for dear life, to the consternation of the proprietors aud clerks, as may well be imagined. Tate tried to use his club on Monahan, but the latter seized it and threw it at the officer. The club missed its mark and went crashing through a plate glass window. The officer finally got the obstreperous prisoner to the floor and dragged him out on the street. Officer Butler had in the meantime arrested Shugrue, but Shugrue, who is large and powerful, threw the officer to the ground and he and Monahan ran east on Main street. Later both men were arrested and looked up in jail, sarfi
This morning in police oourt Shugrue and Monahan were fined $10 and costs •each for resisting. They were sent to jail. & -r* otBOCIT OOUBT.'"
