JOHN J. KEANE,

Bishop of Kichmond, Va., Virtually Chosen to be its First Rector. Honors (all thiok upon (he head of Bishop Keane, of Richmond, Va., who, daring the last few months, has received spsoial marks of favor, from Bome. He has been virtually ohosen rector of the projected National Oatholio University at Washington, and has been spoken of as the probable coadjutor, with the right to succeed him, of Cardinal Gibbons. Of late his name has been conspicuous in the newspapers, as that of a friend of the ex-priest, Dr. McGlynn. One result of their intimacy has been the publication, by Dr. Mo Glynn, of the substanoe of a letter from the Bishop in which Cardinal Bimeoni is represented as condemning Henry George's land views without having examined them. In the judgement of some of Bishop Keane's friends, the publicity given to this opinion which refleots on one of the most powerful ecclesiastics of the Vatican, may damage his prospects. Otherb of them think not, the extraordinary capacity of the Bishop to serve the church, especially his ability as a diplomat, far more than outweighing an opinion of no particular consequence in itself, and probably expressed in the confidence of friendship without the remotest expectation that it ever would be given to the public. This matter cf the letter to McGlynn is of trilling account to the American people compared with the interest felt in the National Catholio University at Washington, which, as it now appears, wilfbecome an accomplished fact, and of which the learned and able man of whom we present the portrait will be most probably the first Rector.

The Reformed Presbyterians Denounce Secret Societies. NEW YORK, June 9.—The synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Amerioa, now in session here, adopted resolutions declaring that seoret societies, of which seorecy is an essential characteristic, are, because of their secrecy, immoral, selfish and unjust that they are degrading and enslaving to the consciences of their members that, in addition to the secrecy of the fraternities, many of them are Christless, yet counterfeit the worship of the church and obstruct her work, and for that reason, as well as on account of the secrecy maintained, the members of such sooietieS ought not to be admitted to the church's membership, and that the synod enjoin the courts of this church to refuse admission to the privileges of the churoh to the members of all secret orders, and to exclude from the membership those belonging to such societies, if there be any in the church, who may have crept in unawares. In the course of the debate which preceded the adoption of these resolutions Freemasonary was bitterly denounced.

It is a Curious Fact

That the body is now more susceptible to benefit from medicine than at any other season. Hence the importance of taking Hood's Sarsaparilla now, when it will do you the most good. It is really wonderful for purifying and enriching the blood, creating an appetite, and giving a healthy tone to the whole system Be sure to get Hood's Sarsaparilla which is peculiar to itself.

COOK COUNTY'S RING.

A Desirable Bill That May do A* ay With It.fi

SPRINGFIELD, 111,, June 9—The Cook county commissioners bill now only needs the Governor's signature to become a lew. It has passed both houses of the Legislature with the amendment providing for an annual election of the whole board in place of a biennial election of a moiuty. The first election will take place November 8, and thereafter annually on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Ten members are to be elected by the city and five by the suburbs. Every voter may designate upon his ballot his choice for

is the outgrowth of the recent exposure of the corruption of the county board of commissioners, and it is believed that the adoption of the new method of election, which the bill provides for, will prevent for all time the formation of another county ring.

Ship-Builders Net Bidding On New 'Cruisers. y:\

WASHINGTON, June 11—The backwardness of shipbuilders in applying for information as to the plans and specifications for the new navy cruisers is causing considerable apprehension among navy ofiicere, and it is feared that the number of bids to be opened on the first of August'will be very smaU.j|trhnB far there has been but one inquiry for information about the plans for the nineteen knot oraisers—that of the Union Works of San Francisco, and a full set of drawings and specifications have been mailed mailed to them. It is not certain, however, that they will submit a bid until they have examined the plans in detail. Not an inquiry has yet been received as to the Newark, and there does not seem to be any disposition on the part of shipbuilders to under take her construction at the maximum cost allowed by Congress—$1,300,000. The two 1,700 ton gunboats will probably be constructed by Cramp & Sons, of Philadelphia.

Doctors Say the New* Remedy tor Con sumption Is of No Value. Chicago News: There was a lively time at the Medical association's con. vention this morning. J. S. Lynch, of Baltimore, read a paper on "General Practice," but dealing principally with anti-pyratics and reoommending the use of anti-pyrine, a new discovery, in place of quinine. He then referred at length to thesubjeotof tuberculosis and the danger of contagion. He Baid that while tuberlosis, especially of the pulmonary organs, was undoubtedly contagious it was rarely so unless the conditions surrounding the inooulated subject were favorable to the propagation of the disease. One might be in constant contact with a consumptive and run no danger, provided he took proper food and plenty of exeroise in fresh air. Dr. Lynoh condemned the sulphuretted hydrogen treatment, saying that it was of "no value whatever except to the quacks and charlatans who derived their income from its use." This remark was received with unanimous applause, and after a few more remarks by the same speaker the session was adjourned.

The Britannic Held to Blame. NEW YOBK, June 9—The decision of the Naval Court before Acting Consul W. R. Hoare was given today in the matter of the inquiry into the causes of the collision of the steamships Celtio and Britannic. The court very severely censured Capt. Perry, of the Britannic, for running at suoh speed, for not giving distinctive whistles to the Celtic to show which way sne gave way and for not sounding the fog whistle in the fog.

Success the Test of Merit as Evidenced by the Achievments of Dr. Barker.

Of all the standards for testing merit none is more reliable than success. Success in business of any nature implies merit, the greater the success the more extraordinary the merit The testimony of merit from tbe success of Dr. Barker now at the Terre Haute House, is so overwhelming in his favor, that his reputation is fully established in this locality. It is doubtful if there is one who through ignorance or prejudice will cry, "He is an advertising qua9k" or question his ability.
