The Medical Sensation at Fontanet
FONTANET, Incl, May 12.—[GAZETTE special.]—On April 23rd at about two o'clock in the morning I was called to see Mrs. Eyeman a boarding house misstress of Fontanet and found that she was shot in the abdomen about six inches from and a little above the umbilicus on the right side. It seems that she and another woman were fooling with a revolver of 32 calibre which they supposed was not loaded but whioh proved to have two cartridges in it, which had not been fired and this lady pointed it at Mrs. Eyeman and pulled the trigger inflicting the above named wound. She would not allow the wound probed and as she was sitting up and did not seem to be in any paiu I simply put on .. compsess and a bandage and departeda I insisted on her lying down but she remained up most ot the day washed dishes &o. Late in the evening she had a chill and I was agaim summoned. On the morning of the 24th she g&ve birth to a well developed male child which was shot through the head, the bones of the head being literally pulverized. After the birth she seemed to be in no pay) and said she felt well. I told her husband I thought she would die from peritonitis and had Dr. Roberts, of Terre Haute called who promptly came in oompany with Dr. Wm. Hayworth. Still she was not suffering any and was prospering nicely which continued on from day to day. On the 4th day she was up and walked around some. On the 5th day of May she did her own washing and was out over town as usuaL On the night

He Is Banquetted at Meridian, Miss., Yesterday.
A Public Reception Given Him.-lie Maftes a Speech. 4
NEW ORLEANS, May 13—A 6peoial the Picayune from Meridian, Miss., says: "At 11 o'clock yesterday morning a public reception was given to Mr. Jefferson Davis at the residence of CoL J. R. Mcintosh, where he is stopping. For two hours a perfect stream of people passed through the parlors and shook hands with the ex-chieftain aqd his beautiful daughter. Mr. Davis was in his best humor and bad a pleasant word for eaoh one that shook hid hand. At 5 o'clock last evening a banquet and reoeption was given in the court house grounds. Mr. Davis made a short address in which he thanked the people of Meridian for their moat cordial reception. At this point members of the Preof Association ascended the platform in a body and presented their respects to him. .• At the banquet there were 300 plates, and seated at the tables were the most distinguished men ot the state. A floral wreath was brought in and E. H. Dyer presented it to Mr. Davis in the name of the women of Meridian Mr. Davis, in accepting it, said "God has graced the south with beautiful flowers and lovely women. The most blessed of women are those of our own southland. With such feeling expressions, the beautiful flowers which were arranged so artistically by loving hands are more beautiful than anything that has been given to me."
The second toast was to "Jefferson Davis, the soldier, statesman and ohampion of southern rights." It was responded to by Hon. Thomas JB. Woods.
When Mr. Davis rose to reply he was greeted with long continued applause. He began by apologizing for the short address he would make them, and said that he was quite fatigued from the day's exercises. Continuing he said: "I am unable to treat this t&eme as it should be without premeditation What was the army and navy of the south? It was the patriotism of persons who bared their breasts to bullets in defending a constitutional right. With great navies against us, we formed regiments and battalions. At their head we placed Lee as their commander. We remember the scenes when the wife, as she threw her arms around her husband, and the daughters in loving embrace gathering around these that were to go, and then the widowed mother as she let the tear

the face of the devoted son she would never see again and girdled his sword to his waist and told him to go forth as his father would have done. Those were the kind of men we had. With inferior numbers of men we marched onward, fighting for our rights, and battle after battle was fought and won, but the northern historians never conceded that and indulged in triumphs of mind over matter. But now these scenes and incidents have passed and they only live in minds and history. United now, if the Union is ever to be broken let the other side break it. The army of the south will shine forever around the campfires and will still shine to our children and childrens' children. The truths we fought for shall not encourage you to ever fight again but keep your word in. good or evil. God a

IllllfS®':
The first morning after using it my flesh (I had no skin only on the end of my nose was a pink color. Next day it was kind of white, and I could plaoe my hands on the t*oree without it being painful. In about two weeks I could stend sti aight, but not walk, I was so weak, but my sores were nearly well. Then I commenced the use of the Cuticura Resolvent, and In three days I was worse than ever. I was one mass of pimples from the top of my head to the soles^of my feet to say they were painlul would not do justice to the case. In from two to four days they burst and left & small scale, which dropped off and left the spot pure and the skin white, and as near as I can jupge I was cured in about six to eight weeks, and up to this date (i. e. frooa January, 1879, to January, 1887) I have hot been sick In any way, or liave had the least signs of tbe disease reappearing on me. I have an excellent appetite, have the very best of health. My limbs are straight, supple and strong. I have been exposed to all sorts of weather without the least signs of the disease yet. The only difference I find in myself is that my skin is finer, softer and not so liable to get chapped as is other persons.
No doubt many persons will not believe this almost Improbable story, many will think it grossly exaggerated. I don't olnme them a bit if they do, but to satisfy themselves they can call or write to me and find out if What I have written above is true or not. In returning thanks to you for my miraculous cure of eczema or salt rheum, I deem it advisable to give you a detailed account of my case, and as there it, and always will be a' prejudice against advertised remedies, you have my consent -to" publish this testimonial, and all inquiries, by letter or in parson, I will cheerfully answer. I do this that people who go on year after year paying out large sums of money to incompetent physicians and receive no cure, or even relief, or end in filling a permature grave, as was nearly my case, may be induced to make a trial of the wonderful Cuticura Remedies.
At the age of three months a rash made ite appearance on my face. A physician was called, he •aid teething was the cause, he prescribed some cooling medl ine, but the sores spread to my ears and head. Another M. D. was called. He professed to know all about the case, called it "King's Evil," and prescribed gunpowder, brimstone, and lard mixed into a salve, but the disease continued. They could not do anything with it. Another prescribed borax, water and flour another linseed ultices. None of them did me any good at ail,. but made me worse. The disease continued unabated it spread to my arms and legs, (ill I was laid tip entirely, and frpm continual sitt ng on the ftmr on a pillowmy 1 mhs contracts sothut I lost nil control of them, and was utterly helplecp. My mother would have to lilt me out and into bed. cunld get around the house on my bafcdc and feet, but I could not get my clothes fn ar rll, nnd had to wear a sort of dressing gown Mv hair had all matted down or fallen off, and my hea!, face and ears were one ecab, and I bad io h*w a towel on my head all the time la th- summer to keep the flies off. My Parents consulted a prominent physician and surgeon here in Chicago (the other physicians befo mentioned were of fuiidas and Hapiilton, Canada), he snid he conld do nothing for mi,that' the chances wem (hat I would grow out of it, or that it would strike inwardly Rnd kill me in time. He wanted to cut the sinews of my legs so that I ccnid walk, but I would not 1st him, for if I did. get better I would have no control of them.
The difease continued in this manner until I was seventeen years ol»% arid one day in January, 1879, in the Chicago Tribune, I read an account of your medicines. They described my case so exactly that I thought, as a last resort to give them a trial.
When I first applied the Cuticura, I was all raw and^bleediiig from scratching myself, bat when I app'ied it I went asleep movt immediately, something I had not done for years, the effect was so soothing.
