Hop Bitters is not, in any sense, an alcoholio beverage or liquor, and could not be sold, for use, except to persons desirous of obtaining medicinal bitters.

"WASHINGTON, D. 0., Sept. 24,1884. Dear Sir—Why don't you get a certificate from Col. W. fl.'W., of Baltimore, showing how he cured himself of drunkenness by the help of Hop Bitters. His is a wonderful case. He is well known in Rochester, N. Y., by all the drinking people there .He is known in this oity, Cincinnati, New Orleans, New York in taot all over the country, as he has spent thousands of dollars for rum. I honeetly believe his card would be worth thousands of dollars to you in this oity and Baltimore alone, ^nd make thousands bf sober men by induciug the use of your bitters.

Prejudice Kills.
"Eleven years our daughter suffered on a bed of misery under the care of several of the best physicians, who gave her disease various names but DO relief, and now she is restored to us in good health by Hop Bitters, that we had poohed at two years before using it. We earnestly hope ana pray that no one else will let their siok suffer as we did, on account of prejudice against so good a medicise as Hop Bitters."—-The Parents—Good Templars.

Over a year ago I recommended your Hop Bitters to my invalid wife, who has been under medical treatment of Albany's best phyRicians several years. She has been greatly benefitted and still uses the medioine. I believe she will become thouroughly cured of her various complicated diseases by their use. We both reccommend them to our friends, many of whom have' also been cured of their various ailments by (ham. 7

He Claims to Have Been the First to Carry thje News of the Phoenix Park f*-~ Assaisination to Parrielte
NEW YORK, April 23.—In this week's issue of the Standard, Henry George says over his own signature that he was the firet to carry the news of the Phoenix park assassinations to Mr. Parnell. He says that he was in London at the time, and that early in the morning he was aroused by a telegraph messenger bringing him a dispatch from Dr. Kelly, then of Rutland square, Dublin, but now of Lexington avenue, New York, apprising me of the tragedy. *'I immediately made what haste I could," says George, "to Westminster hotel, and waking Davitt showed him the telegram. Springing up with intense emotion he at once sent for Messrs. Dillon and Parnell. All three, as well as other members of the Irish party who were subsequently sent for, were deeply pained and grieved at the news. Davitt seemed so much 'cut up' by it that I realy felt for him, but the man who seemed stirred most was Parnell—ordinarily the most undemonstrative of human beings—and on the first impulse he talked of resigning and leaving public life forever. There could be no question of the real feelings of these men, especially Parnell. It is not that there was any personal sympathy with Burke, who had made himself thoroughly hated by patriotio.Irishmen, but there was personal sympathy with Lord Cavendieh who had just arrived in Ireland, and had done nothing to offend Irish sentiment. His appointment moreover, to take the place of the justly hated Forster, accompanied as it was with the release of the Irish members from Kilmainham, and of Davitt from Portland, was deemed the holding out of the olive branch by the Gladstone government— the dawn for Ireland of a better day, and to this the knives that flashed in Phoenix pdrk gave terrible answer. At a single unexpected blow Parnell's plans were shattered. To him it was not merelj two high officials who were stabbed to death in Phconix park, but a great policy and a high hope.

,. The Smith-Robertson Suit. The Evansville Courier says that it has learned from private sources that the damage suit brought by Colonel Robertson against Green Smith is the result of an agreement between Democrats and Republicans to settle existing differences so that an extra session of the legislature may be called. Mr. W. H. H. Miller, of Harrison, Miller & Elam, attorneys for Colonel Robertson, said yesterday that he never heard of such an agreement that the suit was brought for the purpose of recovering damages, and not for any political effect.

Confession Showing Who Were Members of the Band
ST. Lotus, April 22—A Special from Osark, Missouri, says: "The grand jury yesterday indicted all of the "bald knobbers" now under arrest, eleven in number, for the murder of George Edens. Frank Bean, who recently plead guilty, turning state's evidence, was sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. It is reported that Judge Hubbrrd's instructions to the grand jury have spread terror throughout the "bald knob" section about Chadwick and that a general exodus of the unmasked brotherhood will take place soon. Joe Inman has made out a list of the members of the "bald knob" order of Christian county and he implicates preachers, merchants, doctors, justices of the peace, and many wealthy .and influential citizens. Inman and
Graves agree with Walker in estimating the number in Christian county at 800 and name many prominent men who accompanied them in criminal raids behind the black mask. Graves relates how Walker proposed to prove an alibi for each man present at the Edens— Green murder, fixing unimpeachable witnesses for each guilty man. Thte chief himself carried his wounded boy into Douglass county that night, relying on proving that he could not have been near Green's piemises on the fatal night. Public opinion has asserted itself and the regulators are now terrorstricken."

Animals Roasted in a Fire This Morning.
NNW YOBK, April 22.—The district bounded by Twenty-third and Twentyfourth streets and Third and Lexington avenues, the site of the old Bull's Head market and the place of so-called shelter to thousands of horses, was at an early hour this morning the scene of a conflagration the like of which the firemen say they never flaw before. At 2:3J a. m. a cabman driving down east Twentythird street saw smoke and flames coming out from the stables in the rear of James Donohue's horseshoeing shop at No. 151 east,Twenty-tbird street, and rushing back to the stable he at once eent out an alarm, but before the firemen could get to the spot the whole building was ablaze and the entire block threatened. The work of the firemen was seriously impeded by the movements of the frightened horses, who reared and praqced about in their stalls and on the floor in away th&t for the time defied all efforts at removal, and by the time a third alarm had been sent out seven big animalfe, the property of Davis, a coal dealer, had been'roasted alive.
The firemen a*nd police did excellent work in getting the horses stabled in the Twenty-fourth street rookeries out of their stalls. Many were led into the street all roasted and scorched, but all except the seven spoken of were got out alive. As soon as the 6tables were cleared ihe firemen redoubled their attaoks on the flames and at 4:15 had them under oontrol. The burned horses were valued at $2,500. The damage to the buildings will amount to $10,000.
TOOK MORPHINE.
Anna Jerrell, Aged Twenty-Four, Ends Her Existence.
In a small frame house on north Water [street in which three families live, the street number being 315, lay this morning the remains of Anna E. Jerrell, aged 24, who died from the effects of morphine Sunday morning at half past one o'clock. The morphine was taken at four o'clook Saturday afternoon while the girl was under the influence of liquor, as she frequently was during life. When she was fourteen years old she was married to Joseph M. Jerrell, who now works at the car shops. Her maiden name was Lewis. He recently got a divorce from her on the ground of drunkenness and married again. Two children survive. Jerrell took the eldest child, a girl of seven years. The deceased had the youngest, a girl of eighteen months, It is not known whether the morphine was taken with a suicidal intent or whether the dose was made large enough to kill by mistake. The girl has been a morphine user.
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
A. Malone Tries to Cut His Own Throat. SULLIVAN, Ind., April 21—{GAZETTE special] —Arm Malone attempted to commit suicide at Carlisle, ten miles south of here last night by outting his throat with a razor. He has been for a number of years almost a total wreck from the use of whiskey and opium. During last winter he tried to reform and joined the Christian church. The effort seemed to unbalance his mind and for a few weeks past he has given signs of insanity, but it was not thought necessary to send him to the asylum. Some time during last night he procured a razor and cut his throat from ear to ear almost severinglthe wind pipe. He will probably die.
At the same town John Serwill, while working in the coal mine, was seriously hurt by a rock falling on his head. He was removed from the mine and his wound dressed.. He will probably be able to work in a few weeks at least.
