The Coercion Bill Passes a First Reading

the Commons,

Gladstone Leads the Opposition
jp Jnto the Lobby—Other
Foreign News.
LONDON, April 2.—IN the Commons last night Mr. Parnell resumed the debate on the coercion bill. Upon rising he was loudly oheered. "-V* wf
Mr. Pamell's speech was one of the beet he has ever made in the Honse of Commons. It was intensely dramatic throughout, and commanded the close attention of every person within the* sound of his voice. His peroration was remarkably effective, and created a marked sensation. In low, solemn tones he began it, but increasing in force and lire as he proceeded, his utterances thrilled eyen those who scoffed at his cause. Mr. Gladstone and the entire opposition—Liberals, Radicals and Parnellites—frequently applauded Mr. Parnell, and Mr. Gladstone and many of the Liberal leaders expressed their belief, after the close of the debate, that the Irish leader's address had completely overwhelmed Mr. Balfour and left that gentleman's oase, as he presented it, a complete wreck.
Lord Hartington and Mr. Conybeare spoke briefly for and against the bill, respectively, and Mr. T. P. O'Connor moved to adjourn the debate.
Mr. Gladstone, in supporting Mr. O'Connor's motion, said there were very strong reasons why the debate should be adjourned rather than closed. He defended Mr. Parnell's delay in moving his amendment, saying that the Irish leader's presentation of his case was a grave matter, and one which demanded another night, at least, for discussion.
Sir William Harcourt, continuing the debate, said that the polioy of the Lib-eral-Unionists was now shown to be Coercion pure and simple.
Upon Mr. Smith putting the question, Mr. Gladstone arose, walked alone down the floor into the opposition lobby, ^all the members of the opposition standing and cheering him as he did so. On returning to the House again he was loudly cheered. The motion for cloture was carried—361 to 253, and the first reading of the bill was agreed to without division.
London, April 2—The text of this coercion bill now that it has been made public, intensifies the opposition to the measure. The Parnellites^ express themselves as sanguine that in an ap* peal to the country the government will be overthrown.
DUBLIN, April 2—Constable Dorhej, who threw down his arms and refused to obey orders and take part in the afreet of Father Byan, of the Herbertstown branch of the National League, has been dismissed from the force. The government hay,e. decided not to. perseute him.

Mrwiji Officers Today. IKDIAHA¥OIIB, Ind., Apnl 2.—JGAZBTTB special.]—The following commissioners to erect the soldiers' monument were appointed by the state officers today, under the act of the last Legislature: Lew Wallace, of Crawfordsville George J. Langsdale, of Greencastle, and Dan M. Bansdall, of Indianapolis, and Hugh Dougherty, of Bluffton and S. B. Voyles, of Washington, Democrats. All were soldiers.
Natural Gas and Glass Manufacture. The Indianapolis Journal says: "The introduction of natural gas is likely to work a revolution in the mannfacinre of glass, aside from the great redaction of expense. By its use as a fuel, with freedom from smcice, etc., a Pitta burg inventor has succeeded in producing specimens of variously colored and tinted glaea far superior to any heretofore made in this country, and equal to the finest manufactured in Eur ope. A rrangements are beiug made.for the manufaoture of the new-process glass, which is expected to prove a sensation to the trade,"
The first thing Terre Haute ought do after natural gas is found here, if it is found, is to revive the glass works. There is as fine sand for glass manufacture near here as exists in the state. Mr. De Pauw acknowledges that be has no better sand at New Albany than the samples sent from here. He is now investigating the subject of removal from New Albany to some point where natural gas will furnish him better and oheaper means of making glass, for otherwise he can not compete with Pittsburgh. :, -H

IT is asserted on seemingly good au-1 thority that Wm. A. Bet|oh, th&* leading counsel for Theodore Tilton in the famous suit against Henry Ward Beeoher went into the trial firmly convin6ed that his client had a good case. During the progress of the trial he became convinced by the evidence, of Beecher's innocence and, though he could not betray his olient by retiring from the case, lost heart from that time on. He afterwards became an enthusiastic admirer of Beeoher and the two became warm friendB and exchanged visits. Beach died eeveral years ago, but this story is vouched for by his most intimate frieods.

NPW YORK, April ].—Jacob Sharp will be the next one indicted for complicity in the Broadway steal to be brought to trial. This has been definitely decided upon by Distriot Attorney Martine, aud the preparation of the oase for presentation to a jury is now in active progress. Mr. Sharp's trial was decided upon because the Distriot Attorney does not wish to run the risk of another disagreement in the Cleary case. So he proposes to first try some of the alleged tempters in the famous oase, as this will bring out an entirely new line of evidence. This, it is now intimated, will be of a very sensational character, and*, after having been made available in the trial of the ohiefs of the conspiracy can then be used against the aldermen who have not yet been tried. The date for Mr. Sharp's trial has not yet been fixed, but it will probably be early iu May, as soon as District Attorney Martme can get a judge before whom he can try the oase. The engagements of the available judges are such that a trial cannot be reached during the present month. r$pf 9

Honesty is the best policy in the manufecture of proprietary articles as in all other matters, and the fact that the proprietors of Athlophoros have never claimed for it even all its merit would warrant has not a little to do with its wonderful
their policy haa been wise as well as right Experience has amply demonstrated that mere outward applications are worthless. The disease has its seat in the blood, and any remedy to be successful must deal with the obstructive add which poisons and inflames it.
Athlophoros acts on the blood, muscles and joints directly. It takes the poison out of the blood and carries it out of the system it invigorates the action of the muscles and limbers the stiffness of the joints. It reaches the liver and kidneys, cleansing them from irritating substances, and, if followed up after the rheumatic conditions cease, it will restore thsse organs to regularity and health.
Mrs. C. A. Armstrong, No. 123 S. It was difficult to say which it was. It would go from one side of my body to another. I was never dear of pain. Tnesoreness which I had in my back was always there, but it is not there now since I nsed Athlophoros. The very first dose I took gave me relief. I have only used two bottles, my soreness is all gone, and I am feeling much stronger. I know of several other people that it cured in the same way."

ir Night From an OverdowB^
A seveb year old daughter of and Mrs. Frank McKixmey died last night (Thursday) from an overdose of medicine given to it by its mother. The McKinneys live four or five miles north of town on a farm. They bought a bottle of worm medicine at Dr. Pence's drug, store and the directions were to give it to the child in doses of twenty drops. Instead of that the mother gave it a tablespoon full on Tuesday morning. The child lingered till last night, when it died. Mrs. MoKinney is nearly crazed over her terrible mistake.
Wrenched His Back.
LYKDONVIIXB, OBIIXANS CO., N. Y„ April 2,1885. About a year ago, I imprudently stepped off the Hudson River cars while they were in motion. In trying to save myself from a fearful fall I wrenched my back terribly, The next day I could not walk, and I suffered pain from my neck to my heels. Various applications were made, but nothing which was done abated my suffering. Being anxious to get up and attend to business, I determined to place three Allcock's Porous Plasters, one above the other, on my back. In about an hour and a half they caused considerable itching. The pain and soreness sensibly decreased, and I rested pretty well that night. The next morning the itching began to be quite severe under the plasters. To get some relief, I had my beck well rnbbed crossway cvei the Plasters, I was (surprised withir two hours afterward to find the pain and soreness almost gone. I stayed in bed that day: and the morning afterwards I got up and attended to business.
