People who think a newspaper can pretty much run a year on the receipts from publishing these annual delinquent lists will be surprised to know that the •list this year for the city will amount to only about $26, very considerably less than is required to run the paper one day.
The county lis* is larger and amounts, this year, to about two and a half times that much.
SHANNON'S BANK FAILURE. The failure of Shannon's bank will produce no panic in the money market. Business was always'conducted there on a limited scale which has become more and more contracted within the past few years, and as will be seen, the liabilities, •only $36,000, amount to nothing compared to the two millions and a half of dollars or so which the other banks, actively and prosperously in business, have on deposit. The Savings Bank and the two National banks, alone, have about one and three quarter millions on deposit, as sh6wn by their statements, to say nothing of the sums at McKeen & Co's., and the Prairie City Bank. The failure of Sbanuon's bank has no financial significance whatever, and is wholly unlike the series of failures in the banks at Indianapolis. For a number of years it has only been a place of deposit for a limited number of persons, mostly those whose places of business are convenient to it. The loss to all these will be keenly felt, but, fortunately, both the number and the amounts are comparatively small. Those who have lost trust funds will be most seriously affected. I is hoped that the' real estate, when finally it can be disposed of will help to pay off depositors to a greater extent than the first statements indicate, but this process is always slow. When Mr. Shannon died he was thought to be worth about $70,000, and although some placed the amount lower than that it was eeldom estimated at less than $40,000. That

DELINQUENT TAX LISTS. The popular impression, which like many other erroneous popular impressions, is exceedingly tenacious of life, is that the publication of the delinquent, tax lists is "a great big sugar plum" to the newspaper that gets them. This was true oaco, but that it has not been true for a number of years past, the GAZETTE which has published the county list regularly for three weeks every January for nearly a dozen years past, and the' eitylist several times within that period, and which contains both of them this year, has pretty accurate mean's of knowing. A sixty per cent reduotion in the fees and a still greater reduction in the number of sales advertised, the law •requiring that personal property be first •exhausted, before realty is sold, have caused this. The delinquents are quite as numerous as ever there is no diminishment in the number of those so unfortunate, or so ^negligent as to leave their taxes unpaid.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON.
Who Would Have Thought it, They Already Had Seventeen Lines and Here They Come With
Four More.
The Great l!. P.
The
Hutchinson Daily Nows
MrE Paul

came in last night, having run their survey to within four miles of South Hutchinson from McPberson. They are finishing today and will be in tonight. Mr. Paul is followed by the levelers, who are pushing the work as fast as possible. Mr. Paul says the road will be run to Hutchinson at once. And yet they come!
ANOTHER GREAT LINE.
"It never rains but it pours." Yes terday we announced the advent of the Union Pacific surveyors, and the fact that that great road would soon be run ning into South Hutchinson. Today we will announce another great railroad that has determined to build to South Hutohinson this summer, the Kansas, Colorado Jk Texas. This road, which is backed and being built by Pennsylvania Central capital, is one of the three roads that county bonds were voted to by Wichita recently. That line runs on south, while the new line runs to Marion, South,. Hutohinson, Kingman and Medicine Lodge, as indicated by the following section, which we oopy from the charter:
This corporation is formed for the purpose of constructing, maintaining and operating a standard guage railroad for public use in the conveyance of persons and property for compensation and to construct, operate and maintain a line of telegraph in connection herewith from a point on the proposed line of the Kansas, Colorado & Texas Bailroad company, in Chase County, Kans. olid from thence through the counties of Chase, Marion, Harvey, McPhorson, Reno, Kingman, Pratt, Harper and Barber to the south line of the state of Kansas and from thence through the Indian Territory and the state of Texas, to Mobeetie, in the state ef Texas.
And with a line diverging from said line, at some point thereon in Barber county, and extending through the counties of Barber, Comanche, Clark, Mead, Steward, Stevens and Morton, to the west line of the state of Kansas, and from tTtience in a westerly direction through the Btate of Colorado to the city of Trinidad in the last named state.
This line is now buying right of way out of Kansas City, and last week paid out eighty thousand dollars for same. It will be built to South Hutchinson by Sept. 1, this year, and will be one of the most important lines we will have. It will shorten the distance to Kansas City by 38 miles.
WILL BE BUILT AT ONCE.
Our reporter interviewed Mr. T. D. Paul today, the assistant engineer who has chargo of the Union Pacific engineering corps, and learned from him that for the first twenty miles out of McPherson thoy run on the same quarter section with the Rock Island survey on the west side, they then bear off west while the Rock Island goes east. He says he finds a splendid line and can get through the sand hills all right. The corps, besides Mr. Paul, consist® of H. R. Carpenter, transit man, B. B. Stimeon, leveller, aud ten assistants. The road is to be built at once, and will add another great trunk line to the great railroad center ol Kansas.
E. S. ERNEY SUED.
Newton Rogers Sues Him as a Receiver of the Roeers Estate. In the Circuit Court today Newton Rogers sued Erwin S. Ernev, making allegations as follows: That Erney is the trustee ard agent of Rogers and his creditors for the sale of certain real estate and the collection of debts due Rogers and his creditors that Erney has collected as such agent $5,000 and failsfand refuses to pay over the same to the proper beneficiaries that Ernoy is, as affiant believes, insolvent and not sufficient bond for the security of the funds in his hands that there is now pending in the Clay Circuit Court a suit for the collection of the said money and the removal of Erney as receiver. Rogers asks for an injunction to prevent Erney from collecting $183 now "in the hands of the clerk or any other smms until the suit in Clay county is settled. His attorneys are Judge Isaac N. Pierce and Mr. N. G. Buff.
Senator Voorhees will return to Washington with Miss Voorhees and Miss Key on Saturday and will be in Terre Haute again immediately after adjournment on the 4th of March.
Wysong's Case.
City Marshal Starr, of Greencastle, writes to Superintendent of Police Lawlor that Wysong, the alleged abductor of Ada De Baun, of Filmore, Ind., will be tried next Friday at Greencastle. Officer Lyons, who arrested the Dair, will go over as a witness.

The Deadlock iu the Legislature Remains Unbroken,
INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 26.—[GAZETTE
special]—Representative Dickereon, of

Vigo county, having been called home by siokness iu his family, he was paired with Connelly of Clay. Otherwise the convention was attended by all the members. The. "Big Four," with immovable gravity, voted for Allen, whereat the audience in the gallery smiled and an adjournment followed. The decision of the Supreme Court in the Smith-Robertson tsase is the thing in which interest is jnst now oentered.
The house committee on temperance has practically agreed upon a bill providing for local option by counties or townships, the election to be held upon the petition of one tenth of the voters. Where such a county or township votes for license, an applicant must go through the same proceedings as now to secure a permit and pay $300 annual tax us well as file a bond for $5,000 for the payment of all fines, penaltier, and forfeitures and all damageB growing out of the sale of liquors.
North Linton.
PIMENTO, an. 26.—[GAZETTE special.] —The citizens of North Linton were a little disapppointed last week on account of Lemme Squeezer not getting to send in his report for last Thursday on account of the inclemency of the weather. 1 did not get to town nor send my letter there. Who elfe in Linton township is as happy ae Will Moore who has added to his family a fine son which is the first. Sallie Gardner is on the sick list——W. D. Moore and wife went to Terre Haute last week after their honse furniture. Joseph Shoemaker has made him anew sleigh. He says he is going sleigh riding whenever it anows.
The suppositon is around here that Ban Moore has owned more horses than any other man in Linton township. James Mays is going to build a grocery and is going to do a good business. He has a blacksmith shop, carriage shop, saw mill and grocery, therefore we give it the name of Maysville. The schools of North Linton are excellent, especially the one taught by Miss Emma Boyll—Joseph McGrewia slowly recovering from his recent illness— Miss Stellia E. Gunnn, who has been going to school at Terre Haute, spent last Sunday at home in our vicinity but returned to school on Monday morning. The citizens of North Linton were sorry to learn that the hay press owned by Bledsoe & Keith was destroyed by fire— "1 want to inform the readers of the GAZETTE there hns been a new process discovered to fatten poor horses. It was discovered by Avry Boyll. It is feeding them on smoothing irons. You who have poor horses try it and you will find it makes good feed to last, and it is so cheap.—Newton Moore was quietly married to Miss Lue McCoskoy last Sunday. ay name is Lemme Squeezer,
My age is jnst six times three, My home is in North Linton, My life is wild and free. There is no happier life my boys, And on this yon all my bet, Than writing for a good paper Like the WEEKLY GAZETTE.
My name is Lemme Squoezeer, A name I'll never deny, To represent North Linton I do expect to try, And if I fail in doing so I think that I will try To find some one to help me More competent than I.

LIBEETTYILLE, Jan. 26.—[GAZETTE special.]—The bottom has dropped out of our much talked of gravel roads and we are now traveling the lofter mud.
J. V. Pinson has shipped his hay at $9.50 per ton. Business will be dull now until we get better roads again.— Essa Tutwiler is very sick at this writing. Dr. McCloud, of Vermillion, is attending her. Clarence Spicer, of Indianapolis, is visiting relatives in the village. D. F. Foltz has been on the sick list for several weeks and is slowly improving. Our village bids fair to rival Terre Haute for cheap pictures.— We have an artist who is ready to open up. The artist is on hand and just as soon as a suitable room can be furnished pictures will be taken very cheap. The village blacksmith has been vary, busy for several weeks shoeing horses.
Hollingsworth & Downing have bought Peter Wilhoit's interest in his separator and engine. B. R. Fuqua is still hauling tile Mrs. Yinger made a flying trip to Ohio and back last week. Pophan Bedeoe and Hollingsworth got two hogs out of four shot for last Saturday—Wheat is looking fine in this locality since the snow has melted away— Spunn, the huckster, thinks roads are a little too bad to pull out this week.

The creek is booming. The ice has broken up and drift, trees, and ice are taken in the current toward Indiana's father of waters.
George Irwin, who has been in our midst for 5 years, soon leaves for Rockville where he will accept a position in Mahan's drug store. The scene at the Sabbath School was very affeotingwhen Superintendent Miller announced Geo's. leave and that all should give him the hand of love and wish him success in his new position.
Dr. Crooks delivered an essay on the cause, reality, proof and effect of the flood before the Sunday School. He made points clear, precise and interesting. It was all based on scripture and deserves praise in its composition. Why can't we have moro such essays in our Sunday School?
Mrs. Annie Glass from near Terre Haute, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Jacob Miller.
