THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 1886.

The Republican Legislative Muddle. TERRE HAUTE, Sept. 22.—[To the Editor of the GAZETTE:]—The putting of Mr. Dickerson unqualifiedly upon .the Republican ticket is a surprise to many Greenbackers. Mr. Dickerson was present at the last Greenback county convention and was placed in nomination for the Legislature, but declined and was withdrawn. Mr. Dickerson did not state at the time that he was a Republican. And the fact that he was present and took action with the Green backers led me to infer that he was a Greenbaoker, although one earnest and candid worker in the Greenback party openly expressed some doubts as to where Mr. Dickerson stood.

I have understood that one of the Greenback leaders of the city has written to Mr. Dickerson to know whether he is on the Republican ticket as Greenbacker or as a Republican. It is to be hoped that the reply will be made public through the press in order that Greenbackers may know whether they can vote for Mr. Dickerson or not.

I think there are very few Greenbackers in Vigo county who are prepared to vote for a candidate who by his party affiliation may be compelled to support for the United States Sc-aate the gentleman who a few years ago branded Mr. Dickereon's party with the term "fiat idiots."

As to the Republican party, I don't think they are in much of a "fix" by nominating Mr. Diokerson. They have already indorsed one Greenbaoker in

And according to some of the Greenback leaders in this city Mr." Johnston ought to accept the Greenback nomination for Congress and decline the Republican nomination, since in their opinion he is so widely at variance with the Republican view of the Greenback and silver questions.
