King Cole, a Comic Opera, the Notable Event of the Week.

PARIS, 111, GAZETTE special].—The notable event of the week in o4r quiet oity was the rendition of the comic opere"King Cole," at Opera gallon Thursday and Friday evenings under the direction of Prof. W. A. Ogden, of Toledo, O. It is written in the very best style. The harmonies are striking and pretty and the melodies exceedingly fine. It was climaxed in a*way which -denotes acquaintance with the stage and the subject.

The situations are ludicrous and the setting quite novel. Prof. Ogden wrote this opera at intervals within the past year putting with it his best musical skill and imagination, and produced it before the public for the first time in our city aided by our native home talent. The parts were in the main well sua tained. The lack of elocutionary traki ing on the part of some performers made a serious defect. The music by individuals, and the choruses was of first order and generally well rendered. The lack of spirit and natural versatility was quite apparent in several actors, while in others they were fully up to the sentiment and the occasion. The libretta is the production of Misa Eva L. Ogden and has an under current of satire that is really interesting,

"Authority" in

I have devoted my efforts to the im provement of the game and to fostering it in every way I thought likely to promote the objeot I had in view, which was to build up a national field game for Americans such as crioket was for England." wr

When Mr. Chadwick was Chairman of the Committee of Bules of the old National League, he revised and improved the playing rules of the game. He continued actively engaged as a member of. association conventions un til the present.National Leage was or ganized.

The man who made base ball the national game of the United States is well-preserved, laborious and active, There is every indication in his condiion of body that he will work many ears yet.

Of Cincinnati, Elected Supreme Chancellor Commander of the World, at Toronto, Ont.'

At the convention lately held in Toronto, Canada, Howard Douglass, of Cincinnati, Supreme Vice-Chancellor of the World, of the Knights of Pythias was elected to the highest office within reach of a member of that Order—the* Supreme Chancellorship.

The Game.

Henry Chadwick, of Brooklyn, New York, is distinguished among Americans as the improver of the game of base ball when it needed improvement and as the leading writer on the subject of the great popular field sport of this country. Now, in life's decline, he still occasionally takes part in a game of base ball.

He was born in England, in the year 1814, the son of a distinguished journalist of that country. In 1844 he entered the ranks of journalism, as contributor to aLong Island newspaper. His work throughout along career as a newspaper man, has been to report oricket and base ball matters. He is the author of wellknown works on the national game. The veteran condemns all the abuses that are found to accompany a sport which in itself is innocent, healthful an re re at iv "It was in 1856," he says of his first conception of the work that has made him famo.us, "when, on returning from an early closing of a crioket match at Fox Hall, Hobok&n, I chanoed to go through the Elysian Fields during the progress of 8 base ball match between the then noted Eagle and Gotham clubs. The game was being sharply played on both sides, and I watched it with deeper interest than any previous match of the kind I had seen. It was not long before I was struck with the idea that base ball was just the game for a nation' al spo^t for Americans, and, reflecting on the subject on my return home, I came to the conclusion that from this game of ball a powerful lever might be made bj- nieans of which our people could be lifted into a position of more devotion to physieal exercise and healthful out-door recreation than they had hiterto been noted for." He goes on to say that: "From the period that I first beoamean ardent admirer of base ball

Constitutional Catarrh!

No single disease has entailed mere suffering or hastened the breaking up of the constitution I thanOatarrh. The sense of smell, of taste, of sight, of hearing, the human voice, the mind,— one or more, and sometimes all, yield to its destruotlve influence*. The poison it distributes throughout the system attacks every vital force, and breaks up the most robust constitutions. Ignored, because but little understood, by most phjsicians, lmpotently assailed by quacks and charlatans, those suffering from it have little hope to bo relieved of it this side of the grave. It is time, then, that the popular treat- ,. ment of this terrible disease by remedies within the reach ef all, passed Into hands at ence competent and trustworthy. The new and hitherto untried method adopted by, Dr. Sinford in the preparation of his RADICAL CUBE has won the hearty pproval of thousands. It is instantaneous in {fording relief in all head colds, Bneezing, snuffling and obstructed breathing, and rapidly removes the most oppressive symptoms, clearing the head, sweetening the breath, restoring the senses of smell, tas+e and hearing, and neutralizing the constitutional tendency of the disease towards the lungs, liver and kidneys.
