Extracts From General Gram's Articte in the November^ Century.
In Which Mention is Made of Gen* eral Craft's Services.
The Century Magazine for November contains (Jen. Grant's paper on the battle of Chattanooga. In it mention is made in several places to the services of our deceased townsman, that brave soldier, Gen. Charles Graft The writer says: "While these operations were going on to the east of Chattanooga, Hooker was engaged in the west. He had three divisions—Osterhaus', of the Fifteenth corps, Army of the Tennessee Geary's Twelfth oorps, Army of the Potomac, and Craft's Fourteenth corps, Army of the Cumberland. Geary was on the right at Wauhatchie, Craft at the center and Osterhaus near Brown's Ferry. The enemy had the east bank of the creek strongly picketed and intrenched and three brigades of troops in the rear to reinforce them if attacked."
Further on he says: "Early in the morning of the 24th Hooker moved Geary's division, supported by a brigade of Craft's, up Lookout creek to effect a crossing. The remainder of Craft's division was to seize the bridge over the creek, near the crossing of th railroad. Osterhaus was to move up to the bridge and cross it. The bridge was seized by Grose's brigade after a slight skirmish with the picket guarding it"
Further on he says: "While the operations at the bridge were progressing Geary was pushing up the hill, over great obstacles, resisted by the enemy directly in his front and in face of the guns on the mountain. The enemy, seeing their left flank and rear menaced, gave way and were followed by Craft and Osterhaus. Soon these were up abreast with Geary, and the whole command pushed up the hill, driving the enemy advance."
Still further: "In the battle of Chattanooga troops from the Army of the Potomac, from the Army of the Tennessee and from the Army of the Cumberland participated. In fact, the accident growing out of the heavy rains and the sudden rise in the Tennessee river so mingled the troops that the organizations were not kept together under their respective commanders during the battle. Hooker, on the right, had Geary's division of the Army of the Potomac, Osterhaus', of the Army of the Tennessee, and Craft's, of the Army of the Cumberland. Sherman had three divisions of his own army, Howard's oorps, from the Army of the Potomac, and Jeff. C. Davis' division, of the Army of the Cumberland. There was no jealousy, hardly rivalry. Indeed, I doubt whether officers or men took any note at the time of this intermingling of commands. All saw a defiant foe surrounding them and
took
it for granted
that every move was intended to dislodge him- and it made no difference where the troops came from so this end was accomplished. The victory at Chattanooga was won against great odds, considering the advantages the enemy had of position, and was accomplished more easily than was expected, by reason of Bragg*s making several grave mistakes—first, in sending away his ablest corps commander with
over
twenty-five thousand troops second, in sending away a division of troops on the eve of the battle third, in placing so much of a force on the plain in front of his impregnable position.'* ,,

Corn husking is in full blast. The average yield is about one third less than was expected Mr. and Mrs. Mark Beal celebrated the twentieth anniversary of their start in married life on the 2nd inst A large number of of their friends attended and passed a very pleasant evening The youngest child of W. I. Bitter, a very bright and interesting little girl of 2 years, was scalded to death Saturday morning. The funeral took place from the residence, the remains being interred in the family graveyard The teachers in our public schools in this township are giving good satisfaction. We had the pleasure of attending the institute held at H. E. last Saturday and must say that onr trustee has made the best selection of teachers that has been made for several years. Although Mr. Evans is a young man he is certainly making one of the best trustees this township ever had It is generally supposed that the paper mill at Ellsworth is a benefit to this neighborhood, but can it be considered a benefit when they go to Rockville and pay the Parke county people $5 per ton for straw, while the farmers here who donated the ground the mill stands on are getting but $3.60 delivered at the mill?

PANIC IN CORN.
It Takes a Tumble of Four Cents. CHICAGO, Nov. 11.—There was an approach to a panic in the corn pit on change today. In ten minutes corn dropped off 4 cents. The same decline in wheat would have made the floor the scene of wild excitement, but in oorn the trading is lighter. As it was, the pit was croVded to overflowing with excited traders. Noone doubt8 that the backbone of the bulge in November corn is broken. At this writing it is a drug on the market at 44c, whereas, half an hour ago it was in demand at 47c. It dropped from 47 to 44£c without a sale. The secret is that holders are getting out of thedea). Notwithstanding enormous live hog receipts, provisions were firm and higher, gathering the bulk of strength from oorn, but when this grain broke so sharply, pork and lard eased off.
With feelings of gratitude I send my testimony with regard to your remedy, Athlophoros, for rheumatism. As far as my experience goes I recommend it to sufferers from that complaint. Lewis Bliss, aged 78 years, Mt. Carroll, HI.

All the trouble
now in Park county is the expences that I am putting the tax payers two in Park. Its not my desire to put anny extra expence on the taxpayers of Park. All I want is to give me a fair trial by law and what ever the law sayes must be don with me. That I will abide by let it be death or liberty. Now I do not mean all men Park county. Their is a class of men in Park county that have nothing to pay tax for nor never will have and they are the verry class of men who air aulwayes howling a bout high tax and county expenoe and their men in and a round Rockvill that do not oan anny thing and when theirs a railroad or gravel road that will benefit Kockvill they will vote a tax upon the farmers to mrke them pay when it is no advantage to the farmer but he must pay why the Rockville ring got it o* to you ana he pay Park county 23 years,
payes I have paid tax in I had not much
to pay for I never thought how the oomishners paid it out. Then a gain the Rockvill Republican sayes that Judg Jump says that their will be no excessive charges in his trial and that their will be no change of venue. Now
I HAVEKNOWEN JUDO JUMP
when in Parris and ever since he came to Newport He was a good lawyer and I think he is a good judg of law, and furthermore he is a good Democrat That just suits me. He is a man after my own heart. Now I don't think that Judg Jump will take me to Rockville and put me on trial their and fource me to take counsel from men who not more than two weeks ago was ready to take my life by a mob and the Shiruff 'their saw the danger I was in and he don what law requires of Him and then a portion of Rockvill fel out with him becaus he don what the law required him to. He then went to Judge Jump stating the case and Judge Jumn joined in with him and kep me whear I am now in Terre Haute. I
AM LED TO THINK
that Jump will see that I will have a fair trial and give me a counsel who holds no envy nor mallaoe in no way. This is all I ast for time will soon show for its self when I am in Rockville. I notice the Republican paper of Terre Haute and Indianapolis air down on me. The Terre Haute Express has went back to the year of 1828 two years before I was born and has told everything that hapened since Christ was a yearlin against me and what he could not find the truth he just added to it to make read as bad as he could. Now as to the
TERRE HAtTTE OAZETT
if you want to no the truith about my case it will publish the facts and after I have my trial I will publish all the trew facks in that paper telling the caus of this dreadful tragedy the caus aud all. I am well awair if men new bouth sides of this afair their some men who now air against me would change in opinions if they had the plain truith. I will give it to all in Parck and joining if the mob don't kill me at Rockville when I returnd their. As for the Montezuma citazens on the tax payers their I have never heard a word from them no way. Theirs fine land around Montezuma and Democrats owns it two. They haft to pay taxes two. The Rockville Republicans dont pay all the tax. I dont no how Montezuma feels over my case. I have bin around their for 23 years and the people of the town of Montezuma old and young

oods. He has acted a man with me. Rairdan the same. But now I am in prison. I am left to the law of the state of Indiana and I hope Judge will see that I get a fair trial and good counsel. I hope he will not let the Rockville men rait nim away from giving me a fair trial. I am now like you men in Montezuma. When you wanted licens you had to go out of the county to get licens. I have no money to hire a lawyer with and the state is bound to furnish me one but if the citazens of Park county think it right to try me as they pleas not allowing me proper counsel as the law directs I haft to submit to their fait regardless to the law. So I want
ALIi MY OLD ACQUAINTANCES
ladies and jentelman young and old to com and see me what time 1 haft to stay in this world. I love to talk to them. If I had four thousand dollars I oould soon wak the streets but as I have non I am well contented. I have one good promise from the Lord. If they force me into trial not given me a fair chance use vengance on me the Lord sayes ven-

anoe is mine and I will repay it so I the people of Park will see the best way is to let the law take the proper cours. Testody was Sondayand their was as many as one hundred ladies and jentelman to oome to the jail to see me and talk to me and today is Monday 9th. Their is several come today and one man from Park told me when they got me back their
THKY WOULD MOB ME IN
Rockville if they could. So I look to Murcer the Shiruff and the Judge has given him his orders so if they take me with a mob it will be a dark deed on Park county citazens. I am now an old

man and if they take my life in a rong maner it will never be of no emblem to them for ages to OOHM. Never render eavel for eeveL The officers around the mil Shiruif and all have treated me very kindlv and the young man Jamea Delain th« turn key is treated me kindley bv letting my friends in to see me which gives me aom sonhrt and now I aat for is a fair trial and I will abide by the law and I will faoe the musiok if I stall keep my faith in the Lord. Now after I am tried I will .let all no what b— caused all this dead. ..

Judge Mack announced from the benoh yesterday that he would resort to fines hereafter to stop smoking in court. Only a Step.
When catarrh has progressed to a certain extent, it is only a step to that terrible fatal disease, consumption. If you have catarrh, even slightly, it is a terrible mistake to allow it to continue its course unchecked. If you will only read you will find conclusive reasons why you should take Hood's Sarsaparilla for catarrh, in the statements of many people who have been completely cured of this disease in its most severe forms. Send fdr book containing abundant evidence, to C. I. Hood & Co., proprietors of Hood's Sarsaparilla, Lowell, lass.
Senator Yoorhees, according to a Washington special, left this morning for Annapolis, Md., in response to a request from the defense in a famous murder case about to be placed on trial there. Should he enter the trial he says he will not be able to go to Indiana before the end of the session of Congress, next summer if he does not engage in the trial he will go home this week.'.
