CERTAINLY nobody ever really expected Emory P. Beauchamp to be retained by a Democratic administration as consul at St. Galle or anywhere else Beauchamp has, it is understood, acceptably discharged the not very onerous duties of the places which he has filled. But there is no earthly reason to suppose that the place cannot be filled by some deserving Democrat who will do every bit as well. Beauchamp himself was not tlie most promising diplomat whom the world had ever known at the time of his appointment and the story of his career, for he has done vastly better, nay more, infinitely better than many supposed he would, is rather en couraging to the youth of the land whose capital chiefly consists in confidence in themselves. He has every reason to be proud of his record. He got the place originally by a scratsh, secured a re-appointmeut as by a miracle, has held a soft thing for.a long term and can now come back among us and spend a season in prayer and praise, thanking his lucky stars for the amazing good fortune that has 'been his portion all these years. Meanwhile Terre Haute gets back her rough diamond of a decade ago all polished by his European residence and education and some deserving Democrat can be sent abroad. No doubt one can be found who is possibly almost as good as our Emory now and better than he was when he first set sail across the resounding sea for foreign parts.
HON. JOSHUA JUMP, Judge of the Parke and Termillion circuit, is in the city holding court for Judge Mack in a number of cases with which Mr. Mack was connected as an attorney previous to his election. Judge Jump is prominently mentioned by his Democratic friends in the northern part of the district, and particularly by those who know him best at his home in Newport and Termillion county, for the Congressional nomination next year. Termillion county Democrats say they have supported the Democratic candidates for years and maintained the faith against a large Republican majority in their county, and that during the present generation they have never had the candidate for Congress. They point with pride to Judge Jump's character and record as eminently qualifying him for the discharge of the duties of a Congressman. As a matter of fact he is all that his most enthusiastic friends say of him and would make not only a strong candidate but an admirable representative.
THE Cleveland Leader tells the following anecdote of Dolly Madison and the way in which, by a clever trick, she captured the President of the United States an A induced him to invite her to become the mistress of the White House by marrying him. It says:
Dolly Madison, the brilliant and beautiful wife of the fourth President, rather imposed upon Mr. Madison during their oourtship, and the blind god of love made him believe her to be much more intellectual than she really was. He was in doubt, however, and he determined to test her. To do so he sent her a semi-philosophical book to read, just as he was about to leave for Tirginia, and asked her to send him a written opinion of (its merits after she had read it. Madison, by the way, was at this time a member of Congress at Philadelphia, and he was boarding at the home of his sweetheart, who was then a buxom young widow with her husband hardly cold in the grave. As soon as he had left for Tirginia, the sly dolly took the book to Col. Aaron Burr. She told him of her predicament, and got him to write the letter for her. Of course it was a masterpiece, as Burr was one of the most cultured and scholarly men of his age. She then mailed the letter to Madison at Montpelier. He was delighted with the wonderful intelligence it exhibited, and he proposed instanter upon his return to Philadelphia. She made an able wife and entertained as well, if not better, than any other President's wife since that time. The fashionable world went wild over her beautiful dresses, and her turbans alone cost over one thousand dollars a year.
BROKE. HIS ARM~~
Fell From a Window Twelve Feet High. Tuesday afternoon, about four o'clock, Clarence Howe, who works at the skating rink, fell from the window in the gallery to the floor in the hall, a distance of about twelve feet, and broke his arm. He was looking out of the window1 when the sash, which had been raised, fell and knocked him from the window to the floor below. He struck on his head and shoulder with his right arm ucder him which was broken just above the wrist. The fall stunned him and he was taken to his home on south Thirteenth and-a-half street, where his arm was dressed. At last reports he was doing well. n^vV.

Some ten years ago I had a scrofolous sore on my right hand which gave me great trouble, and under the old-time treatment was healed up, and I supposed I was welL I found, however, it had only been driven into the system by the use of potash and mercury, and in March, 1882, it broke out ,'n my throat, and concentrated in what some of the doctors denominated cancer. I was placed under treatment for this disease. 8cme six or seven of the best physicians in the country had me at different times under their charge, among them three specialists in this line but one after another would exhaust their skill and drop me, for I grew worse continually. The cancer had eaten through my cheek, destroying the roof of my mouth and upper lip, then attacked my tongue, palate and lower lip, destroying the palate and under lip entirely and half my tongue, eating out to the top of my left cheek bone and up to the _oft eye. From a hearty robust woman of 150 pounds,11 was reduced to a mere frame of skin and bones, almost unable to turn myself in bed. I could not eat any solid food, but subsisted on liquids, and my tongue was so far gone I could not talk. The anguish of mind and the horrible sufferings of body which I experienced can never be revealed. Given up by physicians to die, with no hope of recovery upon the part of frlonds who sat around my bodside expecting every moment to be my last in fact, my husband would place his hand on me every now and then to see whether I was alive or not, and at one time all decided that life was extinct, and my death was repoted all over the country.
Such was my wretched and helpless condition the first of last October (1884), when my friends commenced giving me Swift's Specific. In less than a month the eating places stopped and healing commenced, and the fearful aperture in my cheek has been closed and firmly knitted together. A process of anew under lip is progressing finely, and the tongue which was almost destroyed is being recovered, and it seems that nature is supplyi jg anew tongue. I can talk BO that my friends can readily understand me, and can eat solid food again. I am able to walk about wherever I please without the assistance of any one, and have gained fifty pounds of flesh. All this under the blessing of a mercifully Heavenly father, is due to Swift's Specific, I am a wonder and a marve to all my friends, hundreds of whom hav known my intense sufferings, and have visited me in my afflictions. While I am not entirely well, yet my gratitude is none the less devout, and I am confident that a perfect recovery is now in sight. If any doudt these facts I would refer them to Hon. JOhn H. Taylor, State Senator of this district, who is my neighbor, Dr. T. 8. Bradfield, of La Grange, Ga., or to any other persons living In the southern part of Troupe county, Go.
