REV. WHEELER.
His Resignation Accepted, With Reluctance.^l
Resolutions Adopted by the Baptist Church at Last Night's Meeting.
At a business meeting of the members of the Baptist church last night the following letter of resignation was read from Rev. J. Wheeler, pastor of the church: **j
EBBE AUTE,
I
ND., June
1 4
'Fo tlie First Baptist Church DEAB BBETHBEN—For many reasons, which it is not necessary at this time to state, I herewith tender my resignation as pastor of this church. This decision has been one of the trying and painful ones of my whole life, and one to which I have come reluetantly and with a heavy heart. Our relation has been one of uninterrupted harmony and Christian love, and I trust this action of mine will in no way disturb this fellowship. If it seems good to you I think it would be wise to have this resignation take effect June 30. And upon you and me upon this church and congregation and pastor, may the love of God and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ forever abide.
Very fraternally and sincerely, your pastor, J. K. WHEELER
The church adopted the following resolutions: Whereas, Our beloved pastor, Rev. J. K. Wheeler, has tendered his resignation therefore,
Resolved, That we accept his resignation as requested, but with many regrets that from any cause he should have felt this step necessary.
Resolved, That since he came among us he haB, by his faithful services as pastor and by his life as a Christian man and citizen, endeared himself to all of us, afid that our prayers for continued usefulness an'l success in the Master's cause follow him to his new fieli of labor, where we trust he may be instrumental in leading many to Christ.
The resolutions were adopted unanimously. The trustees df the church were appointed a committee to secure a supply for the pulpit in the interval between Rev. Wheeler's retirement nnd the securing of another pastor. This committee consists of Dr. M. H. Waters, J. A. Parker and J. G. Dobbs. An effort will be made to secure a pastor at the earliest possible moment. At the next business meeting a committee will be appointed for this purpose.

DAY.IAUK
the Great Statue'Welcomed. NEW YOBK, June 19.—The day broke auspiciously for the formal welcome to Bartholdi's great statue of Liberty. Great crowds gathered early in the day. As the morning wore on the multitude increased. The tall buildings in the neighborhood of Bowling Green displayed the stars and stripes and somo the national colors of France. Governor's Island looked like a great emerald gem. The scene in the harbor was one of the liveliest description. Nearly every vessel waves the tri-color and the stars and stripes.
When the vessels that ttete to escbrt tho Isere to Bedloe's Island arrived- in the lower bay the water was swarming with craft and as far as the eye could reach there were vessels without number. Soon the Isere headed in the direction of Bedloe's Island. The French man-of-war, La Flore, headed the procession. The gunner opened the salute of honor by firing 21 guns in the short space of 61 secends. Hardly had the smoke cleared away from her deck when the United States man-of-war Omaha replied with a broadside. Then the Alliance and the Powhattan fired their guns. The guns of Fort Wadsworth thundered out a salute as the naval procession passed.
Such a scene has rarely been witnessed in the bay. One hundred steamers and yachts with flying flags and streamers crowded with people followed the Isere. The music of a dozen Dands floated out over the water, while the war ships thundered and the forts re-echoed with booming guns. Tne French officers of the Isere stood on the quarter deck bowing to the salutes which they heard on every side. It seemed like a bottle at sea.
When the anchor of the Isere was at length lowered there

more firing of
cannons, blowing of whistles and shouting of the people. Bedloe's Island was crowded with spectators. Men had climbed up to the top of the pedestal and seated themselves on tne huge stones. The Atlantic proceeded on the way to the battery and the party went ashore.
When Admiral Lacombe stepped on shore Mayor Grace grasped him warmly by the hand. It was nearly 3 o'clock when the procession moved. The line of march lay through Whitehall street to Broadway and the city hall, where the guests were given a banquet*

One word of suggestion, in conclusion, to the street car company. Don't deadhead anybody, and whenever you reduce rates, if ever business warrants it, reduce to all at once and to all alike. One other thing. Tiokets to the extent of twenty-five cents and multiples of that amount, to bo purchased of the drivers, would be a great convenience. Inasmuch as they will stimulate travel they might be sold at a slight reduction, say six for a quarter. But* that is a matter wholly lying within the province of the men who have built the roads with their money and are operating them and--well, many a handsome nose has had its beauty spoiled by being stuck into other people's business.
AN Jgenious youth with a lively imagination and. generous to a fault with other people's money forged the name of Wm. H. Vanderbilt to a check for $30,000 and sent it to the New York World as a contribution to the Bartholdi pedestal fund. When shown the check Vanderbilt pronounced it a forgery.

THE TERKfe" HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTE—
was
wroth be
cause the street car company charged the players fare for riding out to the game on Sunday. An answer from the standpoint of the street car management is in the paper today. The complainant alleges that the ball game created business for tho car company and brought out crowds of people who paid money to the car company for rides. The defense seems to admit the justioe of the ball players' demand but says the privilege was abused. What the GAZETTE marvels at is that the ahswer does not allege that but for the car company running cars out to the grounds the crowd at the game would have been only a fifth or a tenth part as large as it was. The real fact of the business is that both of these organizations, the car company and the ball club, are in the pigeon plucking business and the great public, which rides on the cars of the former'and witnesses the game of the latter are the pigeons. This is not mentioned iu an offensive sense. The pigeons are willing and even anxious to be plucked and part with their feathers as thankfully as a sheep does with its winter fleece at tho approach of hot weather. Bvt this joint combination for the purpose of plucking the public can hardly expect that same public to take any interest in their discussions as to matters of professional courtesy between them. As a matter of fact the two are mutually helpful. The car company makes some money out of the ball association and this latter makes a great deal out of the car company. Indeed they could hardly get a crowd worth playing before but for the cars. Now out of this mutual interdependence they might conclude to do the grandly courteous thing all around. Let the cars deadhead the players and the players deadhead to the game all the stockholders, drivers, conductors eta of the company. But courtesy evens itself up unless one gets ahead of the other and it is hardly cou» tesy then. The best way, however, is to treat these matters as cold blooded business. Let every rider on a oar pay and every witness of a ball game pay. And, by-the-by, if both find themselves getting rich too expeditiously let them reduce rates to the great and uncomplaining public, which gives to both enterprises every iota of value that either possesses. But the public, which is not now, never was and probably never will be a deadhead in anything, does not oare to be bothered by the complainings of persons who are crying over their lapse from deadhe&dism to the dull level of the great mass of people.
