Ascension

Are Waiting Today in Maine to Ascend Upward.

April 29.—Not since the great

sacrificial tragedy at Pocasset in 1879 has fanaticism reached such a height in New England as is indicated in a story which comes from a backwoods region near the centre of Maine. A dispatch from Corinna, Maine, says that 40 or 50 people in that town expect to go to heaven today. During the last two or three months there has been a revival of the Millerite excitement in Corinna, Newport, Orington and other towns.

A prophet named John Nickerson' has been laboring there and has made many converts to his eccentric theories. Nickerson and his disciples make th» vision related in the seventh chapter of Daniel the basis of their belief. They' declare that all the things which Daniel saw in his dream have come to pass ex--# cept that described in the thirteenth verse—"the coming of the son of man."

He, they solemnly avow, is due today and they are making preparations accordingly. As for the four great beasts which came up from the sea, the lioii with eagle wings, the bear with three

«'bs

in his teeth, the four-headed and tree-winged leopard, the fourth, a more terrible beast, with iron teeth mad ten horns with eyes in them, all the^e preliminaries in the vision of Daniel, they say, have been strictly fulfilled and are clear to the eyes of the faithful who look over the world's history.

One of the brethren recently said that the people was undoubtedly one of these beasts but he was not clear as to which one. A reporter asked him if he didn't think O'Donovan Rossa was the beast with iron teeth and ten horns. He thought the suggestion was worthy of consideration. The female members of the congregation have been busy making ascension robes for several days. One and the same kind of a robe will be put .on by all the man^ vbinen and children today. garment of bleached doth which looks soffitftfej? ifce a prist's surpjjoe, something like a butcher's trock, but meetflike a night-gown. There are no buttons on it but it is gathered in at the neck with a tape. The only decoration is a narrow white sash which will be loosely gathered at the waist. The believers did not sleep last night, but passed the time in contemplation at home. This morning at 4 o'clock they assembled at their tabernacle, put on their white robes and are now waiting for the end.

He is Beginning Work on His Bookie

NEW

YoltK, April 29.—The ulcerated^

portions of Gen. Grant's throat from which broken down tissues have been sloughed away have materially improved. The cancerous trouble at the base of the tongue is neither lessened nor it is at present aggressive. It is simply quiescent. Meantime the general system is improved. The weather of the last two days and that of today though unpleasant to persons out of doors has been as a tonic to the system and spirits of Gen. Grant. That depressing element of warmer days is wanting and the General feels brighter and more vigorous. He has now so far improved physically that his mind is becoming engaged with the blocking out of work upon his book. This occupies his faculties and the result is good. General Grant became quiet a little after 10 p.

ne slept. From

that time on until 8 o'clock thi« morning he slept well with occasional wakings. When the General arose this morning he felt better and stronger than on Sunday which was all the tame the best day since the improvement began. When Dr. Douglass left the house at 8:15 o'clock this morning he said that, though there was some thickness of speech the General had better and easier command of the organs of speech than has been the case since the attendance of the doctors became constant. He said the General was better ha at an in a on
