WAR PREPARATIONS.
England Getting Ready for a Bi£ War. LONDON, March 26.—The ordnance department at Chatham has been ordered to ship to India all the Martini' Henry rifles available. The government is placing large orders for rifles and munitions of war with the manufacturers. The men-of-war Mercury, Devastation, Oolussus and Baochaute are being rapidly prepared for sea. Notwithstanding these war preparations prominent financiers state that actual hostilities will be averted. The stock market responds to their views and oon sols and Russian securities are a fraction higher, and the general list of stocks better. The continental bourses show «. corresponding improvement
Orders have likewise been sent to the armorers throughout the- Kingdom to return immediately to the Tower of London all Martini—Henry rifles which they have in stock. The object is that they may be inspected and dispatched to India. Fourteen thousand rifles are now at Portsmouth to be forwr.rded to India to-morrow. Orders have been received at Portsmouth directing the composite sloop Cormorant to be made ready for sea.
The Queen has just sent a message to the House of Commons calling out the reserve militia for permanent service.
At Aldershot orders have been received providing for the raising of 15, 000 troops for India. One battery of horse artillery proceeds from Woolwich to India immediately. The government of Burmah is sending a thousand camels to India to be employed in the transport service on the frontier of Afghanistan by Gen. Stewart, the British commander.
LONDON, March 26—Orders have been sent to Chatham to supply immediately five million cartridges. A wild rumor is afloat that^some Russian troops attacked the portion ef Sir Peter Lumsden's party and two were killed.
ORTH STEIN.
•, He is Acquitted of Murder.
1
KANSAS CITY, MO., March 26.—The jury returned a verdict this morning acquitting Orth Stein, formerly city editor of the Evening Star, who shot and killed Geo. Fredericks, proprietor of a variety theatre this city, in June '82. The quarrel arose over Stein's attentions to Fredericks' mistress, a woman named Hartin, and ended in the shooting of Fredericks on the stairway as the two men were leaving her room late at night. The womaii was the only witness to the shooting and testified against Stein. The plea of the defendant was self defense. At the former trial he was found guilty and sentenced to twentyfive years, but obtained a new trial resulting to-day in acquittal. [Stein is a Lafayette boy, his father being

THE JOAB INCIDENT.
Broken Up
Mr. Joab Said to be Badly Over the Affair, Yesterday evening Deputy Sheriff Grimminger filed a complaint before Justice Murphy charging. M. M. Joab with an assault with intent to kill his wife. The warrant was put in the hands of Constable Reagan -with the understanding that it would be executed this morning.
A friend of Mr. Joab's represented to Justice Murphy this morning that Mr, Joab was in a badly demoralized condition and that he could hardly appear in court. In addition to this Judge McNutt, Mr. Joab's lawyer, was engaged elsewhere, so the Justice decided to let the matter remain .stationary for the present.
The application of Joab's attorneys for a modification of the decree con cerning the child has been set for return in the Superior Court on April 6th.

A few days ago Rev. Wheeler ordered a|Hmn.ll load of coal of L. F. Perdue, to be sent to the house recently vacated by
move. He said he did not want much as there was a good deal of rub slack, etc. in the shed which he warn cleared out before he laid in a supply. The coal was sent, but in the meantime the owner of the property who had agreed to have the shed cleared and who did not know Mr. Wheeler had ordered any opal, hired a man to haul out the aiwrtlr. The man went to the shed and returning said he would haul away the rubbish for the good coal there was in it The oontract was closed. The fellow hauled off the loaid of ooal and sub-let the oontract for the slack to another man. *»VF )',» "V',' t. ?s: '.5*

lMk TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTE.
IN view of the advertised sales of coupes and carriages and hacks and all sorts of handsome equipages of blooded horses and blankets and afghans and whips and gold mounted harness and stable appurtenances generally, by the secretaries of the different depart-* ments at Washington, and the evident intention to stop official deadheadism and make the officials walk or pay for their rides, is there not peculiar appropriateness in speaking of the administration of President Cleveland as a cleaning out of the Augean stables? The Augean stables which Hercules clerned out had in them the accumulated filth of years and he had to turn a river into them and wash them clean. No gorgeous equipages were there, nor gold mounted harness, nor blooded horses, as in these elegant stables which Cleveland's secretaries are washing out, but after all it is altogether ^probable that the modern stables at the nation's capital are really much filthier than their ancient prototype, for nothing is eo utterly unclean as that place, wherever and .whatever it is, in which publio money is misappropriated. Ittf very elegance becomes a measure of its foulness and the gold on harness is indeed filthy lucre. Yes, these Washington departmental liveries are veritable Angean stables and the£ shouid be #s they are being cleaned out. Let Hercules Cleveland go on with the good work.
ALMOST daily now the GAZETTE contains telegraphic information concerning Rial's rebelion. Lewis '-Riel, the head the movement, has been for years a turbulent character in the Canadian Northwest, and was the principal figure of the darkest chapter in her history. When, in 1869, the Hudson Bay Company transferred its rights in Manitoba to the Dominion, the half-breeds, who resented the intrusion of new and strange rulers, armed themselves under Riel's leadership to prevent the entrance of the Dominion authorities until some guar* anty was received that their rights would be recognizted. Aug. 20, 1869 to Aug. 24,1870, they held possession of the country. A provisional government was formed with Riel as president aqd a council of twenty-four members (twelve English and twelve French), and a bill of rights was adopted which demanded representation in the Dominion Parliament and a local legislature, elected by the people. These were conceded by the Manitoba act, which passed the Dominion Parliament May 20, 1870. The rule of Riel was marked by several outbursts of violence and bloodshed, and was but a step removed from anarchy. His government was finally overthrown and he was exiled. Last year it was falsely reported that he had been killed during a riot at Prince Albert, in the Northwest Territory.
OWN in the southern part of Indiana there has been a curious reversal of the millenial promise of a time when swords should be beaten into plowshares and spears into priming hooks. Christian Fleischman and Gottlieb Scharndiel, despite their peaceful given names and despite the fact that they ere near neighbors and old friends, had a quarrel. And then, curiously enough, in a lonely country road, they fell upon one another with a plowshare and a pruning hook, inflicting fatal wounds. When they were found, hours after the fray, they were lying in the road, which had been the sole witness of their wicked perversion of peaceful implements of husbandry to bloody uses, one dead and the other dying. Evidently the millenium is not here yet, although it may be near, on the theory that the darkest hour is just before the dawn.

AN entirely new era has dawned upon Washington. Evidence of it is accumulated on every hand. Only the other day Senator Vanoe, of North Carolina, received a free pass over the Washington and Georgetown street oar line. He returned it with the following endorsement: "I have one of the best pair of legs in the country, and will be willing to walk if you will give this pass to some poor washerwoman who has to pay five cents every time she rides on your cars."
A BED of salt, seventy-eight feet thick, is said to have been discovered at East Aurora, New York, at a depth of 1,350 feel This, under republican rule, would be the signal for increased "protection" and a consequent rise of price. That has been the usual course and usual effect heretofore in cases of the discovery of new and useful resources.
An immense flock of geese flew over the town early this morning going North. Instead of the orderly triangular array which usually characterizes their flight, their files were irregular and broken. Evidently they had either been making a night of it and felt somewhat groggy this morning or had some misgivings as to the wisdom of going in to a region where they were liable at any moment to stumble on the ragged edge of a belated blizzard. Or, perhaps, they thought there was to be another Republican National Convention at Chicago and wanted to report early, rr
