CLEVELAND'S CALLERS TO-DAY.

A Steady Stream of Visitors—He Signs Grant's Commission On Tbe Retired List.

WASU'IKGTON, March 0.—The first 'oftlci&l act ot President Cleveland was the nomination of his cabinet His second v?as to offer bis signature to the commi?8io of U. S. Grant as an officer on the retued li9t of the army with the rank of General.

The callers at the White House lb-day were even greater than yesterday. They began to arrive befoie the doors were open and continued coming in large numbers all day. Tbe President received some ot them in the library and others in the East room, just as it happened to be convenient. This arrangement kept him busy running up and down stairs. The majority of callers consisted of delegatious trom tbe different states, among ihtm the followiog: Virginia was headed by Representatives Barbour and Wiae. West Virginia was headed by Senators Camden and Kennr.. Iowa was headed by Representative Pueey. There were two from Missouri—one headed by Representative Bland and the other by Representative.elect Heard, Alabama was headed with Representative Wheeler, Michigan with Representative Maybury, Illinois with Representative Springer, New York with Representative Hiscnc*, New Jersey with Representative Brewer. Louisiana with Representative Blanchard.

The members of the National Democratic Committee also called in a body. Anions tbe other callers were Attorney General Garland, Senator Jonas, Gen. Jos. Jfi. Johnston, Washington McLean, Attorney General O'Brien, of New York lias W- Burt, of New York ExSenator Hereford, Representatives Turner and McAaoo, Geu. Hancock and Gen. Farns worth.

The President to-day accepted the resignation of Mr. Arthur's Cabinet and signed the commissions of tbe new Oabi. net officers. They will probably enter upon the discharge of their duties to* morrow. r*

ONE OF THE DANIELS.!

Points About the President's Adroit and Diplomatic Private Secretary, WASHINGTON, March 6.—One of the meet noticeable men about Cleveland is private secretary. The reason why he is specially noticeablc is because he is credited with having so uch influence with the President. Ordenarily the private secretaries to the preniden's do not rank high so far as influence is concerned: There has been, however, no private secretary who has come to the White House for many years who has had the wide political experience" of Colonei Lament.

He possesses Cleveland's confidence to a remarkable degree. He has been his close adviser and has tor along time been taken into his confidence. At Albany, however, the situation is much 'different from at Washington. There Lamont was practically Cleveland's only adviser. Here Cleveland has seven counsellors, who will see him every day of his life-. five of whom are very prominent, influential men. In addition to these counsellors the Democratic leaders io both Houses will have access to him and will

THE

insist on givi&g him advice. No president can escape this unless he should cut loose irom his party.

Ii is understood here that some of the Democrats who reprerent the revenue reform element are very much opposed to the Tilden influence in the new administration. Tbesse gentlemen have a prejudice against ')olonei Lamont on account of hid former connection with Tilden and became it is still believed he hhs confidential relations. It is a purjudice that may be very easily disposed of, as I understand that the new private secretary is very diplomatic and adroit politician, who has much more skill in creating triends than the average men of hie age. He does not believe in making needlese enemies. Hia preeent position is one that will try his ability. If he can maintain his influence and close relations with the President in* the face ot the counter influences that will surroond Cleveland here it will show that he has very marked ability as a politician and diplomatist.
