A FALSE RUMOR
That Vice-President Hendricks Had been
Killed.
A rumor was current this afternoon to the effect that Vice-Pi evident Hendricks had been killed in a railroad tccident. For a time it created quite a commotion and the Gazette telephone was kept busy in answering inquiries. Thtre was happily nothing in the report, which had been htard by a citizen at a railroad telegraph office, the operator of which had heard it from another operator out on the line, who had heard it from another and so on back to nothingness.

[contemporary seems strangely arid unnecessarily worri«l over what it is pleased .to term the Gazette's lack of influence in the councils of the ifcwiiocratic party. One might almost fancy from its course that it was intending to abandon the Republican pnr'y in ihe hour of its deteat and was impressed with the idea that the way to do that was to pick out ot the many bills pending in the Legislatme, and most oi which are good, the few unwise and vicious ones and covertly champion them.
It may have a monopoly of that? sort of thing. -"j it is muah more worried about the influence of this paper than are its managers. The Gazette's only anxiety is to be right itself and next to have, its party ri^ht on public question?. Influence is a thing tkat will take care of itself. The present Legislature has m&ny excellent measures before it and some bad ones. None but good measures have passed so far. Oar faith is firm that nothing vicious will yass. Indiana, and Terre Haute especially, have fared well so far Our distinguished townsman has been re-elected to the United (States Senate. Nothing could be better than that. The State Normal school .which is an espeeial source of pride as well as of profit to Terre Haate, will be justly and even generously dealt with by the Legislature. Vigo and Sullivan will be wedded in one congressional district. That is good. The bill releasing the bondsmen of Newton Rogers, and the Legislative Metropolitan police bill, are measures to which, without reference to their origin, the Gazette is heartily opposed. But they have not passed the Legislature! Nor does the Gazette believe ihey will. Certainly they will not if honest and earnest efforts in this quarter can prevent it.
With the Gazetoe measures are wise or unwise, good or bad, on their merits, and without reference to their origin. Members of the Legislature are responsible to their conscience? and their constituents for their conduct. Well, the Gazette has constituents. It urged upon them a certain line of political conduct and there was a tacit understanding based on an implied promise that only Ihe matters discussed in the canvass aud on which the judgment of the people was taken should b9 enacted. Every possible effort to keep those promises will be made by the Gazette. All these things may sound like "preachments" to the Gazette's jocose morning contemporary, but as a matter of fact they are the dictates of the plainest and commonest soit of political honesty.
If the Express is really opposed to these two bills and can forego chmkling over the rough joke their passage would be on the Gazette, aud for that matter on the people of Terre Haate and Yigo county, the present is a pretty good time lor it to be saying so.

Young—Robbing.
Yesterday evening Miss Anna M. Robbins was united in marriage to Mr. Wm. A. Young at the Presbyterian church. The ceremony was performed at 8 o'clock by Rev. George R. Pierce, the bridal couple standing beneath a handsome floral yoke. The bride's attendants were Miss Luna Myers, Mies Mattie Surrell, MiS9 Hattie Brown and Mies' Helen Byers. Will Scudder, .Toe Lewi?, Wm. Mering and Otto Heytoih officiated as ushers. A reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents, on west Main street, immediately after the ceremony. The bridal couple left this morning for New Orleans.
The bride i« the charming and accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Itobbins, and the groom one of the most popular and promising attorneys. The bride was handsomely, attired in a white gros-grain silk, trimmed in white brocaded velvet and Duchess lace. Diamonds were the only'ornaments. The bridesmaids looked lovely. Miss Bvers wore a cream colored cashmere trimmed in lace, Mies Brown a cream, colored cashmere. Miss Myers, a pink cashmere trimratd in lace, and Miss Surrell a sea foam green cashmere trimmed in lace. The happy couple received a large number ot very elegant and valuable presents.

llffi TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTE.
Gazette's esteemed morning
figured eonspicuuamy
and agreeably in that pleasant little affa in the Bates Hoose parlors, Indianapolis. Wednesday night, ^the occasion being the piesentation to Vice-President-elect Hendricks of a gavel. Full partiesars were published in the Gazette's vs columns yesterday, compiled from Indianapel5s papers, all of which gave accounts of the affair more extended than the regular associated pre. report sent out to all the leading papers of the United States. The speech ot our .townsman, ex-Mayor B. F. Havens, in making tbe presentation was graceful and appropriate, as was aho the reply of Mr. Hendricks, than whom no one in the country has a happier faculty of felicitious speech. The gavel itself was made by John G. Mack, son of our Circuit Court Judge, in tbe shops of the l?o&e Polytechnic Institute, of which his father is a trustee and he a pupil.
