Terre Haute has only one avowed can didate for the collector6hip, and that is J. M. One other is occasionally mentioned, but it is by the Uepubli. cans, and the wish is father the thought. It is sufficient to say that the record of this person is such as to pre olude all possibility of bis selection The Collector handles a great deal of money, ntd the sight of mouey sets this person wild. The Indiauapoiis Journal proteges to believe* that it is now likely to bo defeated, as the Democrats are divided upon n„a matter and the opposition is uutstrength. The Republican member* in caucus last night decid«d to vote against the bill. The Democrat,M did not make the poliee bill a caucus question owing to the divi.-oon among the Democratic member?. The time of tb? Democratic caucus last ni:.'ht was wholly taken up with the apportionment bills presented by Representative Patten. The caucus lasted until 10 O'CIORK. Th?re wasnome^ speech making and a great deal of interchange ot' opii.ioos, aud it was impossible to reach a conclusion. Numerous chai.ges were suggested. Speaker Jewett was in favor of placiair Sullivan in the Eighth district. The whole matter was teferred to a oommittee of onfrom each district to report .sn next Monday evening. Senator Schloss is the member oi the committee from this district.
The House yesterday reduced the Stale Univorsity appropriation from $50,000 to $30,000 by a vote of 4G to 42. Messrs. Butz aud Debs voted aghitistthe reduction.

SUPERINTENDENT VAVDEVER.
A Sketch of Him and His Portrait in the National Police Gazette. It. the last issue of the National Police Gazette appeared a well written sketch ol Superintendent of Police Vaudever and a portrait of him of which we cannot speak so well. The sketch is as followe: "Chas. Vaudever, Chief of Police of Terre Haute, Indiana, began his official career in 1868 as deputy sheriff of Vigo county, Indiana, at the age of twenty, in 1869, a year memorable in police annals of thai city for the lawless cba acters congregated there during the building of the Vandalia & I. & St. L. railroads and Vigo Iron Mills, he waa appointed to a position in the police depart meut of Terre Haute, and during bis first two years' service made by him&ell over 1,100 arrests. From that time uatil his appointment as chief ot police, in May, 1884, he has served in different capacities in the department, gaining, through his determination and untiring efforts, a reputation and popularity excelled by few officials in the country. Naturally qualified for the work of a shrewd, successful detective, he has conducted a number of in portant cases in Indiana and adjoining states. His record shows a number of over 250 criminals convicted by hira. With his in domitable will and determination there is a most laudable charitable nature, which hasbe?n the caua of much blesaing among the poor, who, when worthy of assistance, never appeal to him in vain. The citizens of Terre Haute and members ot the department over which be presides, as a mark of their appreciation and esteem, presented him a few days ago with a beautiful badge set with six large diamonds arid fifty-eight chips, and said to be the finest insignia of offioe worn by any person in a like poiition in the country." v,

THE TRUMP CASE.
That Letter in Pull—Moody's Father Arrive*—Humors About Poison.
There has been much said about the letter written by Moudy to Mrs. Trump that was intercepted by the authorities Mr. Thomas Harper, Trump's lawyer, does not think it hard on his client at all. This afternoon he furnished the original to a GAZETTB reporter, who copied it vcr batim. It is as follows:
FRANKFORT, Ind., Feb. 7, 1885. Dear Friend Netie I thought I would right and let you know where I was at and see if you would right to me. I left the next day after your Mis (misfortune) and came over here and iff you wont to wright all right. I dont intend to stay long heare in this town. Ide, that is Mart's wife, says for you to come up on a visit and bring your baby along. Ide says her baby is the best looking. You right and let is know when you will come and dont fail Be shure and come and let us know when you wii come and I will meat you at the train. I can get a job here if I want to work. Now, if you will come let us no amediately. This is all for present
Your friend W. W. MOUDY.
The hatdest thing about it is that Moudy denied that he had written such a letter or any letter at all. Why did he deny it if there wasn't something behind it?
Moudy's lather prrived this morning. Moudy has retained McNutt A McNutt. There were no new developments in the case to-day, except that a rumor was afloat that Mrs. Trttmp had purchesed poison on the day before the killing. After Mrs. Trump had been taken to jail aftei making her eonfession shb told OfficerDwyer that she wanted it modified somewhat. She did not know whether she had cocked the pistol when she fired or whether it tas a self-cocker.
The State House Roof.
General Morris says the root of the new State House will be one of the best ever built. On the iron rafters of the roof tbere has been placed a heavy sheeting of asbestos boards that are fire-proof. On this theie is an oak sheeting one and one-half inches thiok and two inches tide, tongued and grooved, and pat together with white lead. On top ot ihi8 there is another sheeting of asbestos boards. On the second sheeting of asbestos the slating is placed and fastened down with sorews. The oak boards, which are the only combustible material about the building, are thus fincloted with asbestos. It is absolutely fire proof, and could not be destroyed in two weeks by burning kindling around it. The oak is to hold the slate which is secured to it. The copper wire method of fastening tlate is regarded as the poorest of all methods. The roof will not' leak, General Morris says, like that of the Union County Court House. A Times reporter was shown one ct the pieces of slate that will be used. It was one-half an inch thicii and its dimensions were fourteen by twenty-four inches. It is strong enough to sustain a weight ot several hundred pounds.—[Indianapolis Sentinel.

The Gallant Earle Dies Fighting at the Head of His Troops—Further Assurances of Gordon's Death.
LONDON, Feb. 12.—The War Office has received the following information from Wolseley: "The fortified vessel in which Gen. Earl's detachment proceeded up the Nile from Korti reached the pass above Dulka Island Tuesday. The enemy appeared in great force at this point. After causing some demoralization among them by heavy fire from the guns on board, Gen. £arle and a portion of his men landed and attacked the Arabs, driving them back at the point of the bayonet and carrying the pas9 without expenditure of ammunition. The enemy ralied and made a fierce onslaught upon the English. They repulsed the troops with heavy loss and captured the floating fort.
General Earle was killed while gallantly leading the charge. Three other officers were killed and four funded. Eight men killed and thirty-five wounded. The enemy's loss was considerable.
Elopements,
EUFAULA, Ala., Feb. 12.—Near High Bluff, in Dale County, this State, lived Miss Ella Magen, the daughter of one ot the wealthiest planters iu the couaty. She favored the BUit of Edward Maby, one other father's employes. He was forbidden Ithe house, &and, going there on Tuesday afternoon with a license in his pocket, and riding a fleet horse, Miss Ella jumped up behind him and rode off. Parsuit was made by the girl's father. On reaching a. stream which they had to cros4 they found it so swollen that the attempt was dangerous. In the meantime they could hear the shouts of the pursuing parly. Fortunately Magistrate Mitchell was observed on the other stde of the river. The groom wrapped the license around a stone, and, threw it across to Mitchell, the latter called out the questsons which made the couple one just in time to defeat the interference of the irate father.

AW AGED BAPTIST MINISTER.
Two More Important Cares. Your agent bcingin Columbus, Ga., a few dayn ago, and meeting the venerable brother J. H. Campbell, wt aokea him for the newd. His reply wa*, "I have two more important cures effected by Swif i's Specific to report.'' This veneraole man is known far and wide for his unremitting labors of love in behalf of the poor of Columbus. It will be remembered that the Swift specific Co. has donated quite an amount ot their famous medicine, to be distributed by Mr. Campbell among the poor of th? city hence his remark. He said:
I have just seen a lady who has been greatly annoyed by a tetter in one of her hands. It bad given her much trouble and pain. She said she bad been treated by several physicians during th -4 past three or four years with the old remedies, but without giving any relief cillc and she took foar bottles and is now apparently perfectly well. Her hand Is smooth, and not a single nigii of the disease is loft. It is marvelous how this medicine renovates the sv^tem." "What about rhe othor case?',! "Well that was a lady also. She had been badly.
I have just returnedfrom a visit to a lady who was affected with eczema fourj years Her lace, handi and arms, as well as her body, were cov.red with sores and scobs. It was one of the worst cases of this terrible disease that 1 have ever seen. The suffering of this poor creature was beyond express'on. She tried eve remedy at nand, including mercury and iodide of potash, hut she only sre 7 worse. She was in this condition when I first saw the case. I coon had her taking Swift's Specific, and she has now only taken two bottles, but every mark of the disease has almost entirely disappeared- Her general health has greatly impioved. It is one of the most remarkable cares that has ccme nnder my notice, and in a ministry of silty vears have miDgled with every class of eo* ciety and observed closely the varl ty of dlceases which affect humanity. Blood diseases are the most ,_umerous and them st difficult to remove. To overcome these diseases, it is my ieliberito judgment that S gift's Specific is the grandest blood pnriller ever discovered, lis effects are wonderful, and I consider them almost miraculous. There Is no medicine comparable tj it.
