GRAY—SIMMONS.

Another Chapter in That Sensational Bastardy Suit. v*.

The bastardy case of Alice Gray, of this city, igaiust Will Simmons, of Ruck v'ile, haa been previously mentioned in these columns, and the statement was made on the day of tbe trial that the case had been compromised. This' was a mistake. It was so understood at the time, but the report turned out to be unfounded. On the following day Justice L^ckman decided th«t his court had no jurisdiction, inasmuch as the defendant lived in another county and the offense was committed in another county. Tie Justice dismissed the cuse, which was immediately brought again a Parke county squire's court, and in the absence of the defendant Ihe testimony ot the plaint iff was taken and the case certified up to the higher court.

It seems that young Simmons took advantage of the di missal and has left the state. The iaw in regard to bastardy cases is a veiy peculiar one. A defendant in a case ot bastardy cannot be t&ken from one state to ano'her on a requisition, and for tbe present at least the young man from Rockvillc is on top The recourse generally had is such cases is to get a requisition out charging the runaway with seduction, and taen when he is brought into the state to dismiss 'he seduction case and fall back on tt bastardy charge. The conetables say ihis trick is often played.

It is not known in the present case whether Miss Gray has sufficient grounds or an bction for seduction, but eo far as he effect of the thing would be it would make no difference. Young SimmoDS' •alber is one of the prominent citizens ot Rootville and the affair has caused a great deal of talk up there. The Gray irl*, several of them in number, are well known in this city.

GREAT FIRE AT EVANSVILLE.

Involving a Loss of at Least $300,000. EVANSVILLE, Ind., Jan. 1.—At 6:55 U?st evening fire broke out in the rear ol Miller BrosT, dry goods house, in the center of the city, and in live minutes the 'uilding was amass of seething flames The Fire Department responded promptly nut the hud gaiutd such headway, •tided by a tierce wind Iroca the west, hat they were powerleB. The fire -pread to-the adjoining buihling of C. C. Tenry, hats and cap?, and lor a time nothing could be heard but the fierce roar ot tbe Amies, the failing timbers and walls and the orders ol tne fire department The police patrol were called and afire cordon established which kept he excited crowd back and enabled the firemen to woik. The ct Id was intense aud water froze as fast as it was thrown.

Having gutted the building of Miller Brothers and Tenny, the fire obtained a footing in the music house of Charles Schmidt, a ten.inch wall apparently proving no protection whatever. In the 'hree upper stories of this building were stoied about fifty thousand dollars' worth ot silks, satins and seali-king belonping to Miller Brothers, which was totally destroyed.

The fteaics then fcaind a twelvc-inch all opposing them, aud the firemen having at tbe imminent risk gained the ihe roof ol the adjoiuing building, fifteen streams of wotcr were poured ia the the fire.

At 9:15 p. m. the fire was well under control. The loss is oce oi the most serins in the history of tbe citv.

Tne total net lok- will reach over $300, 000.

THE GOVERNOR ELECT.

When He Will be Inaugurated—The Meeting of the Legislature on the 8th Inst.

There is a diversity of satemeot about the time the Governorelect will be inaugurated. A GAZETTE reporter looked up the law to-day. The Constitution reads: "The official term of the Governor and the Lieutenant-Governor shall commence on the second Monday in January in the year 1853, and on the same day every fourth year hereafter."

This will throw the inauguration this year on the 12th of January. The Legislature will meet on the 8th of January, which falls on Andrew Jackson's day. Tbe inauguration of tbe Legislature will bo effected on that day, but no other business will be transacted.

On tbe same day there will be a banquet by the Democratic editorB of the •itate, the meeting of their association taking place on that day.

NEW YORK POLITICS.

A Lively Fight Over the City Patronage New YoRk, Jan. 1. —At 12:30 this morning Alderman Kirfc waB sworn in as mayor by Judge Donohue, of the Supreme Oourt. Mr. Kirk said be bad •btained advicu from many eminent judges to the effect that bis title could uot be impeached. Politicians of all grades were around the CUy Hall till a very late hour. The Tammany men and so-called •'machine" Republicans are just now in tbe ascendant. All are awaiiug with mote or less anxiety what the di»y may bring forth. Mayor Grace takes office at noon. Acting Mayor Kirk has the power of appointment, without confirmation by the aldermen, from now until noon.

LA.TEK—The officers of the corporation counsel were barricaded last night and remained closed against all com era this morning.

Mayor Kirk arrived in the City Hall at half past eleven and appointed Ool. E. T. Wood corporation counsel. Col. Wood is a brother-in-law of ex-Mayor Edson and a leading member of Tammany Hall. Mt.yor Kirk remained in the Mayor's efflce receiving the congratulations of iriends until noon. Mayor Grace has just made his appearance and assumes office at noon.

THE following remarkable story, which, however, lacks confirmation, comes from Cincinnati. Frank Hurd, the Toledo Congressman, speaking of Cleveland to a party of fellow Democrats, is reported as saying: 'The first free trade club of America, he says, was in Bntfalo alter the civil war. The meeting was called by leading Buffalo Democrats and a tew free trade Republicans. They met in the law office ot Bissell & Cleveland and perfected the organization of the free trade club. This organization exists today aod Grover Cleveland is president. He was elected President at the'start and has continued to be its president ever since. Mr, Hurd was asked why these iacts were kept quiet daring the campaign. He replied that when C'eveland became prominent in politics each member of the club was .instructed to keep the matter secret tor fear that protectionist prejudices would injure his prospects. Out of personal good will toward him all the members have been very close-mouthed about the matter. Some time ago Mr. Hurd had a conservation with Mr. Bisscll, in which both expressed surprise that the secret had been kept so well.

According to Mr. Hurd's views Cleveland is a radical free trader, who will ad Vance his ideas when in power. Kurd says the idea of Randall going into the cabinet is bosh, as Cleveland's free trade views will not peimit such a recognition of protection

If the policy of the government has any great weight in industrial affairs it seems not unlikely that a system which has brought business to its present condition might ba advantageously changed

EX-GOVERNOR JOHN P. ST. JOHN, late Prohibition candidate tor the presidency, has written a letter to the Post-Dispatch denouncing in unmeasured terms editor McCullagb, of the Globe-Democrat lor declaring that he (St. John) tried to sell out his party to the Republicans and tailing because ot a disagreement as to terms did sell to the Democrats. It is interesting to note that the Republicans by their own showing had a corruption fund and were trying to buy St. John off the track.
