The breaking down of a hanging lamp in Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Whitehead's room at the Paris House caused an alarm of fire to be given.
Christmas was generally observed. A number of family dinner parties were given and mary valuable presents were exchanged. Services were held at the Eoiscopal and Catholic churches. The a'rter church was crowded at five Vclock mass although the thermometer T89 several degrees below zero.
Open House will not be the rule on Jfew Years day as of yore, although a cumber of tbe younger young ladies will receive calls.

Tae St. Stephen's Brotherhood gave a delightful banquet at their hall. The hall was beautifully decorated. Bishop Knickerbocker made an address, Mayor Armstrong,-Judge Maok and others.
The McKeen Rifles gave a delightful hall Dowling hall on Monday, December 29tb.
Eleven ot the Apollo orchestra went to Danville on Wednesoay. December 31st. to play for a dance for railroad men.

Captain Hager has improved greatly in health during the past week. The Haeer Veterans on Wednesday evening, December 31st, presented him with a fine gold beaded cane.
The Davii family returned from Vincennes and Washington where they gave concerts during the week. They sang at Danville Friday and Saturday nights.
Congressman Lamb left for Washington on Friday Jan. 2nd. The Terre Haute Savings Bank never passes a dividend. Notice was given in Friday's GAZETTE January 2nd, of the usual dividend payable to depositors on and after Januarv 20th.
The pews of St Stephen's church were rented on Friday, Jan 2nd. The Vigo Medical Society held its annual banquet and election of officers last evening. The ofHcers chosen were: President. BALTIMORE, Jan. 2.—The prospects at the cotton mills in this vicinity are much brighter. All but one of the mills wero in operation yesterday. MORE EARTHQUAKES.
Spain Realizing Aaventist Predictions. MADRID, Jan.2.—Shocks of earthquake were again experienced at Alhama last night and the town is in ruin. A panic prevails among the inhabitants of Antiquera, twenty-eight miles northwest of Malaga, where tbe shocks bare already been felt.
Earthquake shocks were again felt at Gianad.a, Malaga, Nerja and Algarrobo last night. The panic among the people is unabated. A number of t^wns and villages have been completely destroyed, tbe inhabitants having deeerted them. Many personn sleep in the railway carriages. A royal decree bas been issued, ordering that a national subscription for tbe relief of the sufierers be made. Police officials have agreed to contri ute one day's pay each. By this means $200,000 will be raised. Spanish ambassadors, Ministers and Consuls in all countries will also open subscriptions.

E. Henry Lacomba, who claims to be legally appointed corporation counsel, be.gan proceedings in the Superior Court against Edward T. Wood, Mayor Edson's brother-in-law, who also lays claim to the office of corporet'on counsel, to test bis title to the position. Lacombe claims he was legally appointed by acting Mayor Sanger, while Wood puts in a similar claim to the office by the appointment of acting Mayor Kirke Judge TruaX yesterday granted an injunction restraining Wood from entering and taking possession of tbe office

CHICAGO, Jan. 2.—The Michigan Central and Pennsylvania roads this morning reduced rates from Chicago to New York to $14 00. Scalpers make a rate ot $13 50 by the Michigan Central and $12 (H) via the Grand Trunk and Chicago & Atlantic.
