An Experience a Physician Has but Once in a Lifetime,
A Domestic Treates Consternation in a Household and Bewilderment a a Doctor and a Hack
Driver-
Nigt oefore Just about 8 o'clock in all the rain a well-known citizea ot Terre Haute in hot haste and in a hack called at the residence of a prominent physician whose residence is not a thousand miles trom the corner of Eighth and Cherry streets, and had the physician hastily put on his hat and overcoat and go with him to Lis residence. The excited citizen explained that a domestic who had hired into his family just a few days before was in a condition suitable only for women who have husbands, and that the interesting event had precipitated itself with such suddenness that
ALMOST ANY MOMENT
might witness the culminating period. The house was found in a state of frantic excitement. The girl was crying. She had not been in the taut ily long enough for them to bave any attachment for her, and the man of the house wanted her removed. The girl was a^ked if she had j.'Dy friends in town. She had only been in the city a few weeks. Sho said she had, and'named a family on a certain street. She got into the hack with the physician, and the driv&r was told not to make any delay to reach the desired point. Now, on the way the girl began to manifest symptoms that caused the most alarming thoughts to flit through the brain of the p'jys:cian, who is hirnelfa man ot unusually qu et tempera aient, tor he be^uu to realize the

taat was among the possibilities, if not indeed among the probabilities, at that particular moment. The house however, was reached without any unusual accident. The gin insisted ou getting out herself and explaining matters, which she did, but the lord of the household r«.-iused to admit her, and she was driven back again to the hack. In the meaoiime, the hack driv r's curiosity was aroused (of urse it didu't tate much to do that), and he was anxious to know what ia thedernatioD all this was abou'. The phy^iciau thought it best to acquaint him with tbe true facts, and it is said that a man a square off saw the hack driver's bat rise slowly up lrom the top of his head.
THE HACK DRIVER
waB then a much more scared individual than th'j doctor. The doctor did not own the hack. Away to the township trus tee'a office sped the hack. It cidn't need any encouraging word from the physio ian to make the hackman give the lash to the horses. A light was seen up in Mr. Reicherl's office and the doc or ..astened up that well-known stairway. A lew words were said. The poor hou-e A us of course suggested, but then said the doctor: "That wont do. That's too far away. Some place we can reach quicker*
TIME IS PRECIOUS."
I'he old stand-by, the Crapo House, was settled upon in a hurry, and toward that interesting establishment hurried the hackman, the doctor and the girl. A train couldn't have gone much swifter. The Grapo 11'ruse was reached without any unusual incident, a room was secured and at 2 o'clock in the morning the girl, aged 22, gave birth to a child which was aead. Such is the story of that night ride in the hack.
